As Internet based copywriters and marketers we encounter a barrage of
information explaining what goes into creating effective and compelling copy...

There are at least ten quality newsletters that should be mandatory reading by
anyone serious about the craft of copywriting.

Then there are the message forums...

We’re lucky to be in a business where sharing ideas and providing help with
complex problems is second nature to even the most prestigious names in the
industry.

Where would we be without incredible resources like the Warrior Forum and Michel
Fortin’s Copywriter’s Board?

But, with all the good info out there, comes just as much junk.

For every guy like Paul Myers, who will blow your mind with the depth of his
knowledge...

There is some goofball expelling totally incorrect advice, so off the mark it can
actually cause damage to anyone green enough to follow it.

It’s our jobs to wade through all this info and try to put it to good use. But, in the
end, as far the quality of any letter is concerned... all that matters is did it sell.

The letter we’re looking at in this report was written for a product in the IM niche.

It’s called the 1% M.O.L.B. Wealth Formula, has it’s been fixed at the #1 spot on
ClickBank’s toughest category (Marketing and Ads) for exactly one month at the
time of this writing.

The M.O.L.B. letter converted at 8% out of the gate, and consistently over 5%
since. That’s respectable. So, we know the letter did its job. It sold the product.

What Made The Letter So Effective?


If you asked ten people, you’d likely get as many answers. This report isn’t
intended as a rulebook on “how to write a high-converting sales letter.” Just an
examination of what went into creating what turned out to be a very successful
sales letter.

I’m careful to say “turned out to be” because, regardless of how skilled and
effective we become as copywriters, we can never truly know if we’ve hit the target
until the letter goes live on launch day.

Any worthy and experienced copywriter has lived the high of a successful promotion
– the exuberant calls and emails from the client praising your genius as he
refreshes his ClickBank account and watches the numbers roll up like high score on
a pinball machine.

And the gut wrenching calls from a panicked client whose launch is tanking before
his eyes – and wants to know from you “what the hell went wrong?”

I’m under no illusion that a sales letter is the most important part of a successful
Internet product launch. Strength of list, product, and offer all play crucial roles in
the ultimate success, or demise, of any campaign.

Beyond that, many smaller factors; timing, competition, the economy, and
technical issues can also make or break a promotion.

And it certainly helps any copywriter to have a good client with a product that
delivers value.

Alex Edevane, the client for this letter, is a very wise marketer and a capable
copywriter as well. He and I worked closely together to make this letter, and the
entire campaign, the success it became.

(If there’s a non-copywriting lesson to be learned from this report it’s to seek out
good clients and do whatever it takes to accommodate their needs. One smart,
organized and honest client is worth a hundred empty “one-night-stands”)

Alex originally hired me to rewrite his letter for this product. That letter
looked nothing like what became the final version you’ll see here. Rewrites can
often be more challenging than starting fresh because you have to wade through a
lot of copy to see what’s worth keeping.


I typically find that once I hit a groove, there’s no more cutting and pasting after
that. Every word will be rewritten to keep the voice intact. This is especially true
when the letter is story based, and has a strongly themed hook.

Finding The Hook

Finding the hook for this product was one key to its success. If you’ve
listened to guys like Eugene Schwartz and John Carlton talk about finding the hook
in a product, you know it will usually be found by digging deep into your client’s
brain.

John Carlton’s famous “one-legged golfer” letter is the result of a fact mentioned
merely as an aside during a long interview with his client. If not for John’s keen
writer’s mind, it might have slipped right by unnoticed. Instead it sold countless
videos to golfers looking to improve their golf swing. And netted the client millions.

In the case of Alex Edevane and the M.O.L.B. Wealth Formula, the hook was hiding
in the short time he spent in the military. But it was my discontent with what I was
trying to make work as the hook that lead me to it.

See, before becoming an affiliate Internet Marketer and netting over a half million
dollars in 15 months, Alex owned a restaurant. He was a hands-on type of owner...
working long and tiring 14 hour days, and having zero social life, before finally
selling out to his partner for a small profit. Hardly worth the effort.

I thought I could do something with the restaurant story. People can certainly
relate to working too much for too little gratification. So, I went to work on the
hook. But, it just wasn’t there. There’s nothing inherently dramatic about owning a
restaurant.

It was too off topic.

Plus, most people looking to make money online have probably never owned a
business before. If the hero in my story hook has owned a restaurant – it might
come off like he had an advantage going in.

It had to be something else... more exciting... more intriguing... more thematic.

I knew Alex had lived all over the world. I also knew he was born in Israel. I did
some research and found that all male Israeli citizens are required to serve a
minimum 3 years in the military. Now I was getting somewhere...


I messaged Alex. “Did you serve in the military?” He wrote back, “Yes, I did.
Why, do you think it will be good to put in the copy?”

I did. And it was. “Alex Edevane, the overworked restaurant owner who discovered
a better life with online marketing” now became “Alex the former Army Commando
who toppled the Internet marketing regime,” and the letter had its hook.

Having a strong theme can make a letter a lot of fun to write. But, there’s a fine
line between keeping the theme, and becoming a comic book. I try to avoid overkill
with the thematic references. Every paragraph doesn’t need to conk readers over
the head with forced analogies.

Hopefully, I avoided that in this letter. But, the tone of the letter isn’t as important
as the bigger selling factors.

Balancing Proof and Story

One of those factors is proof. Alex’s video showing his $500,000 + ClickBank profits
is just about all the proof you need to know a system works. Toss in a few solid
testimonials from other people he’s taught to make money... and some vendors
who’ve seen his system in action, and your good to go.

Any long sales letter is a balancing act. If you’ve got plenty of strong proof to back
up your claims you can afford to stretch out the storytelling a bit. I did this here
with the adventure of taking down the “elite 1%”.

But, if you’re short on proof, you’ll be safer sticking to those stories highlighting the
reader benefits. Either way, you have to be sure the reader never has a chance to
wander off.

Never forget that readers of sales letters are constantly searching for an excuse to
click away and move on... While writing, I imagine the reader’s index finger resting
on the left click of their mouse like the hair-trigger of a 9mm pointed straight at my
head. A little dramatic perhaps, but it works.

Okay, I could go on discussing all the elements of the letter... but what I’m always
eager to see is examples of those ideas in action. So, rather than ramble on about
what I did and why I did it, I’ve gone through the entire letter and made notations.
This way you can see the thinking behind the elements, and know their intended
purpose.
