Many people who suffer from sleep apnea
are unaware of their condition – usually
because they're asleep while the symptoms
occur. If you know that you snore
exceptionally often or loudly, however, you
are encouraged to consider visiting an expert
who can perform an evaluation.

How do you know that you might have sleep
apnea? The first sign is, of course, persistent and/or
loud snoring. Since you usually cannot hear yourself
while you sleep, ask your spouse if he or she
frequently hears your snoring. Another sign of sleep
apnea is frequent pauses in breathing, as well as
gasping or choking when sleeping. Other signs
include waking up with a feeling of dry mouth due to
gasping. You should also consider how you feel
during the day. If you feel abnormally sleepy during
waking hours, it might be due to the interruption of
your sleep pattern by the sporadic breathing of
sleep apnea.

Sometimes sleep apnea can be caused by
an underlying disorder such as a
neuromuscular or heart disorder. If you are
experiencing any of the above symptoms,
consider undergoing a sleep test with a
specialist.
