Overview:
Varicose veins is a symbol that refers to swollen, twisted, and sometimes painful veins that have filled
with an abnormal collection of blood .It happens occasionally in the lower limb due to effect of gravity
Causes:
In normal veins, valves in the vein keep blood moving forward toward the heart. In case of varicose
veins, The valves do not perform its function properly and allow blood to Accumulate in the vein .this
accumulation in the vein causes it to enlarge and this occur often in the veins of the legs .
Causes include:
Defective valves from birth (congenitally defective valves).
Pregnancy.
Thrombophlebitis.
Standing for a long time may develop varicose veins and having increased pressure in the
abdomen make the condition worse.
Primary varicose veins occur because of the congenitally defective of valves, or even for
unknown cause.
Secondary varicose veins happen for another condition as a pregnancy
Symptoms:
heaviness, aching and pain in the legs.
Visible, enlarged veins.
Mild swelling of ankles.
Brown and discoloration and Skin ulcers near the ankle of the skin.
Exams and Tests:
2. The diagnosis is mainly depend on the appearance of the leg veins when you are standing with
the legs dangling.
Duplex ultrasound exam is applied to see blood flow in the veins, and to rule out other disorders
of the legs (such as a blood clot). Rarely, an angiogram of the legs may be performed to rule out
other disorders.
Treatment:
Treatment is usually conservative. You should avoid standing for long time, raise your legs when
resting or sleeping, and wear elastic support hose.
You may need surgery or non surgical treatment for:
Leg pain, often patient Feels as his leg is heavy or tired.
Sores which caused by poor blood flow through the veins.
Improving the appearance of the legs.
Lipodermatosclerosis - fatty tissue under skin that hardens over time.
Other treatments do not involve surgery as:
Sclerotherapy.
Laser ablation.
Radiofrequency ablation
Prevention:
You are at risk of developing varicose veins if there is family history indicates so you should take care
and avoid prolonged standing
