There has been a constant rise in the importance of animal cell culture for the large-scale production
of pharmaceutical products. However, the cells sensibility towards their cultivation environment still
presents a challenging issue. As compared to the microbial cultures, cell cultures are not protected
by a cell wall and therefore are more sensitive to shear stress and foam formation. Therefore, reactor
design and selection of ‘robust’ cell lines are particularly significant for these conditions.
The microbial sterilisable-in-place bioreactor systems come in variant volume of 20 liter, 40 liter, 70
liter and 140 liter. The different applications of these bioreactor systems include pilot plant and small-
scale production for mammalian cells as well as micro-organisms. The first step in the scale-up to
production level is pilot range and these systems have same functionality as full production scale.
Therefore, it leads to minimum risks in process transfer to the final production volume.
Factors such as increasing number of laboratories and technical innovations are leading to the high
market share of this segment. However, regulatory hurdles are further hampering the market.
