- <Narrative> Now that the idea of ‘Sustainability’ is established (through the story of Acies), the question arises – Where is this idea or concept applicable ?. Is it close to us, can we see it or can we experience it ? The answer is ‘yes’, infact we experience and live ‘Sustainability’ every day. Let me explain. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> I will try to address the question – Where Is Sustainability ?. The simple answer is – ‘Sustainability’ is everywhere. But let me elaborate with a few levels where ‘Sustainability’ is extremely relevant. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> So, ‘Sustainability’ is applicable at – Personal level <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> Community Level <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> Business Level <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> Country Level <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> And World Level Sustainability. Let me elaborate further. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> For me personal sustainability is ‘90 years of healthy life’. This is something I have defined for myself. Others may have definitions of their own. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> But this definition of ‘Sustainability’ is a function of many parameters. For example – my financial health, my psychological health, my physical health and many more parameters. Only when my performance is balanced and good in all these parameters – would I be able to achieve Sustainability, as per my definition. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> Similarly, ‘Sustainability’ for a business can be defined as ‘Long Term Profitability’. Here ‘Long Term’ and ‘Profitability’ are not defined. For few organizations long term is 2 years, for few its 10 years where as few are planning and getting ready for the next half century. Also, ‘Profitability’ could be replaced by ‘Value Creation’, ‘Social Contribution’ etc., as defined by individual organization. But it is till a function of few underlying parameters. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> The paraments could be – financial performance, resources used, ethical conduct and many more. You would relate as we have many examples where organizations have collapsed just because their performance was not good in one of the many parameters. Many financially successful organizations have collapsed due to their in-ethical conduct, irresponsible environmental management. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> On similar lines, World Sustainability can be defined as 'Developed Life', if we take care of Mother Earth so that she can support and flourish all the flora, fauna and human life, where every human has food, clothing, shelter and an free, fair and equal opportunity to achieve what he / she wants to achieve in life. But this too is dependent on some parameters. <Switch Slide>
- <Narrative> These parameters are highly debated and discussed – Economic Growth, Environmental Responsibility and Social Responsibility. This concept od ‘Sustainability’ is also referred to as – <Switch Slide>
