  3. 3. “ Data is Worthless if You Don’t Communicate It . - Thomas H. Davenport 3
  4. 4. What does it mean? ● It means communicating the numbers and not just crunching them. ● Drop the misconception that results would “speak for themselves” 4
  5. 5. “ You don’t need to be a winemaker to become a wine connoisseur. 5
  6. 6. Quant Jacks? ● Does it mean that managers have to be exceptionally skilled at quantitative analysis? NO. ● But, we need to become better consumers of data, with a better appreciation of quantitative analysis and be able to communicate what the numbers mean.
  7. 7. Why do we need it? ● Compiling vast databases would be useless, if data is not communicated properly ● Game changing data might remain hidden if not communicated properly 7
  8. 8. Importance of Communicating Data From events in history.
  9. 9. Genetics, anyone? ● Although Gregor Johann Mendel, botanist and scientist, discovered the concept of genetic inheritance, his ideas were not adopted during his lifetime due to poor communication of data. 10

  11. 11. Marriage advice? ● Observing several hundred couples, Dr. John Gottman and his team were able to score couples’ interactions and identify the patterns that predict divorce or a happy marriage. ● This was great work in itself, but Gottman didn’t stop there. 12
  12. 12. Marriage advice? ● He and his wife Julie founded a non-profit research institute and a for-profit organization to apply the results through books, DVDs, workshops, and therapist training. They’ve influenced exponentially more marriages through these outlets than they could possibly ever have done in their own clinic 13
  13. 13. The lesson Effective dissemination of data can scale the impact of data multi-fold.
  14. 14. Framework ● Most frameworks do not include details on statistical methods used, regression coefficients, or logarithmic transformations ● Most audiences neither understand nor appreciate those details; they care about results and implications. 15
  15. 15. Relevance to managers ● According to a McKinsey Global Institute report on big data, we’ll need over 1.5 million more data-savvy managers to take advantage of all the data we generate. 16
  16. 16. Relevance to managers ● There is a pressing need for more business-minded people who can think quantitatively and make decisions based on data and analysis, and business- minded people who can do so will become increasingly valuable. 17
  17. 17. 18 Thank You!
