4. GETTING STARTED | CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE
The first thing we want to do before
we embark on creating our presentation
is ask ourselves 3 questions
5. GETTING STARTED | CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE - OBJECTIVE
What is the objective of the SlideShare presentation?
Different objectives will require unique tactics to meet them.
For bonus points, focus on a single objective for your presentation.
Here are just some of the ways that SlideShare can work for you:
• Drive traffic to your website
• Generate leads / build an email list
• Target potential customers
• Build your brand authority
• Rank better on Google
Q1.
6. GETTING STARTED | CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE - OBJECTIVE
Q2.
How will we attract our ideal audience?
On any given day, SlideShare’s homepage is filled with tons
of great looking content, filled with value and information.
So, how do we ensure that our presentation gets the attention
that it deserves? Here’s how:
Foundational / The Long Game
• Know the audience that your presentation is for;
• Create for this audience - design, titles, headlines, content,
everything - make sure it all resonates with them;
The Short Game
• Impactful / shocking / controversial titles & eye-catching cover slide
7. GETTING STARTED | CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE - OBJECTIVE
How will we retain their interest
so that they stay engaged with your presentation and not click
away to another page?
Two things:
• Provide value!
• Think of your SlideShare presentation like a story or movie -
with a Beginning, Middle and End. Each slide is a scene where
you get to captivate your audience and compel them to progress
to the next scene, and eventually, your entire presentation.
Take your reader on a journey with you!

8. CREATION | DESIGN
“Your presentation is like a cake: it could be
delicious; but if it’s not visually appealing,
no one will eat it.”

9. CREATION | DESIGN: FONTS
Use cheap. Look cheap.
For serious, some fonts just
make you look like “ew”.
Arial
Comic Sans
Trebuchet MS
Verdana
Times New Roman…
They make us (and honestly,
your potential customers) go “ew”.
10. CREATION | DESIGN: FONTS
Our Font Solutions
1. Steal ideas from the pros - gain inspiration from what designers are currently using.
CreativeBloq has a great article with a list of good looking fonts (paid and free)
(we also using Pinterest, Behance and Dribbble)
2. Invest in good looking fonts - for this, we use Adobe Typekit
3. Stick to 2 fonts throughout your slide deck (title / header font and paragraph font)
(okay fine, 3 fonts max, if you include a dedicated font for your “quote” slides)
11. CREATION | DESIGN: CONTRAST & COLOR
Pay attention to
CONTRAST, COLOR & READABILITY
for your
readers’ sake
12. CREATION | DESIGN: CONTRAST & COLOR
Our Favorite Color Palette Tool: Adobe Color
Adobe Color is an awesome & free online tool
for choosing a color palette without having to
be a PhD in Color Theory. And you can explore
the color themes that other users create.
Nifty.
13. CREATION | CLICKABLE LINKS
In the past, getting clickable links onto your SlideShare presentation required
a roundabout workflow (PDF annotations, blah blah blah). Not anymore.
At the time of creating this presentation in Jan 2016, we managed to upload
our presentation to SlideShare and all links were clickable.
Our workflow was simply:
1. Export Keynote presentation to PDF;
2. Upload PDF to SlideShare;
3. All links worked like they should
4. Note: We found that Slideshare does not recognize links from “Grouped” items.
Make sure you “Ungroup” elements (e.g. buttons) before adding links to them.
We want to verify that this actually works across operating systems and
software - let us know in the comments below.
14. CREATION | THE “TITLE SAFE AREA”
Caution: Beware the “Title Safe Area”.
Keep all your clickable links within the
Title Safe Area (example on the next slide).
When your readers’ cursor hover close enough
to bottom danger zone, large thumbnails pop up,
which can get really annoying, really quickly.
Especially if you unwittingly insert clickable
content in that area.
And clicking within the left and right danger
zones trigger a “prev / next slide” action - so keep
links away from that area too.

You’re welcome. 😎
16. CALL-TO-ACTION | YOUR READER’S NEXT MOVE
Don’t leave your readers hanging once they’ve finished reading
the SlideShare presentation that you’ve worked hard to create.
Remember to include a call-to-action that encourages your
readers to perform a follow-on action - whether that may be to
download a PDF, visit your website or purchase something from you.
You can use a button that stands out like this one, for example:
Psst - this button is included in our Downloadable Template

17. OPTIMIZATION | LONG TAIL KEYWORDS & BACKLINKS
Leverage the fact that Slideshare is an authority site to raise the ranking of
your content on Google.
Optimize your presentation for search rankings by taking advantage of
long-tail keywords with your titles - which effectively means, using a title
that people would typically search for, like “How to start a YouTube channel”.
Additionally, you should also point backlinks to your presentation.
More on this on the next slide about Distribution.
18. DISTRIBUTION | INCREASE YOUR REACH
Once you’ve finished your presentation,
the next thing you want to do, naturally,
is distribute and promote it!
1. First things first - upload your presentation
to SlideShare
2. Share your content via SlideShare by
clicking on the social media icons
3. Also make sure to share your presentation
on Pinterest and embed it on your blog or
if you’re guest blogging
19. DISTRIBUTION | GET ON SLIDESHARE’S HOMEPAGE
If your presentation gets enough views
on any of the social networks, it could
be featured on SlideShare’s “Trending
In Social Media” list.
Which could, in turn, send a massive
wave of additional SlideShare members
to your presentation.
We believe that we ended up on
SlideShare’s “Featured” page because
we had a distribution plan and a
relevant, timely and pretty presentation.
