The collection process is simple. After birth, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut,
as it would be even if the stem cells were not being saved:

Cord Blood Collection
The blood remaining in the umbilical cord is
extracted and flows into ViaCord’s ® collection
bag by gravity until it stops. The actual
collection typically takes three to five minutes.

Cord Tissue Collection
If you have chosen to preserve the stem
cells from the surrounding cord tissue the
OB/GYN will place the tissue in the sterile
specimen cup provided by ViaCord®.

arrange for a medical courier to come to your bed side, pick
up your collection kit, and facilitate transport to ViaCord’s®
processing facility.
