Wearable Tech – What is Next?
Venkat Alagarsamy28th Aug 2020
What is Wearable Tech?
• A Gadget
• Electronic Gadget
• Smart Electronic Gadget
• Smart Electronic Gadget that has a
power of micro computer to process
and store data
• Smart Electronic Gadget with a power
of computer to connect to internet and
respond in-real time
The Market
Let’s see, How it works!!! • One or more sensors
connected together
for a specific purpose
• Collect the Data from
body or surroundings
• Transmit to mobile
device or hub using
low energy protocols
like Bluetooth, IR etc.
• Computations at
Local Device an/or
Backend Servers
Alert & Respond
Let’s Categorize itConsumer
Enterprise
Healthcare
Military
The Evolution
• Analog watch (500 years)
• Digital Watch 1972 & Digital Watch with Calculator
• In 1990, Casio watch with Calendar, store appointment, alarm etc.
• Era of BT, internet, mobile technology, cloud computing
• In 2000, Nike and Fitbit produced devices to stay digitally connected.
• Wrist bands to Brain Chips
Gadget or WearTech?
• Device should work on motion control and gesture recognition
• 24x7 Availability with continuous processing & server support
• Connected with Mobile Eco System
• Multiple Channel connectivity such as mobile data, wireless, Bluetooth, NFC,
iBeacon etc.
• Easy to access with less distracting notifications.
• Open interfaces to connect with 3rd party accessories, applications & API’s
Applications
Few Wearables and Applications
• Sony’s Patterned Wig – Sony’s SmartWig
is expected to help the visually challenged,
navigate their way using GPS and vibration-
based commands. This device would also
push game developers to come up with
more games with enriched experience in
virtual reality space.
Sleep Mask – This wearable mask is designed to
help Polyphasic sleepers. This mask monitors
brain activity and sleep waves, eye movement,
muscle tension, heart rate, body temperature and
blood saturation to detect the sleeping pattern
and wake the user up at the optimal time.
Few Wearables and Applications
Google Glass – It is a voice activated eye glass using which
the user can take pictures, record video, post images and
statuses, see navigation directions, search the web and here’s
the best part. This could all be done without using your
hands.
Stretchable Tattoo (Bio-Stamp) – It
is a collection of sensors integrated
in a skin like “Band-Aid” that looks
like a tattoo, generally used to identify
a person and/or collect data such as
temperature, heart rate, blood
pressure, brain activity, UV exposure
etc. from their body.
Few Wearables and Applications
Watches, Pendants, Wrist Bands
& Rings – Usually comes with
LED displays designed to deliver
notifications from the user’s phone,
place and screen calls, control
music and camera, collect body
data etc. to name a few functions.
Wearable Clothes – This includes sweaters,
trousers, polo shirts, briefs & vests, Socks etc.
Technology and Fashion giants like Microsoft,
Durex, and Ralph Lauren are investing in
Wearable Clothing Technology. The research
varies from data collection to monitoring and
alerting.
Few Wearables and Applications
Smart Shoes – Like watches, Smart
Shoes work using BT pairing with a
user’s phone. It is mainly designed
to track activity. Some of the Smart
Shoes comes with GPS integration
and helps to navigate using
vibrations.
Brain Chip – Listen to Music,
Dump Memory and many. Still in
R&D by Neuralink
Wearable & TeleHealth
Wearable & TeleHealth
What is driving?
The Dev Eco System
• Warp is an ultra small
form-factor embedded
computer system targeted
towards the development
and creation of wearables,
sensors, and IoT devices.
• It packs a powerful set of
features including its
powerful processor and
communication
capabilities
Dos & Don’ts
Dos
• Connect to what matters to you
• Try a new health or fitness
wearable
• Support innovation and
innovators
• Imagine the unimaginable – and
then make it real
Don’ts
• Don’t Sacrifice performance for
looks
• Forget wearables are part of
your digital footprint
• Connect things just because you
can
• Develop electronic isolation
Challenges
• Battery Life - BT or Wirless
• Ergonomics
• Differentiating and Providing Value – Making product that people are connect
emotionally
• Sealing – Ingress Protection Rating – IP00 to IP68
• Miniaturization and Integration – Antennas & Charging Units
• Safety, Security and Privacy – Batteries, Hacking & Data privacy
Bonus: Internet of Things (IoT)
• Wearables
• Connected Cars
• Industrial Internet of Things
(IIoT)
• Banking Internet of Things
(BIoT) and
• Smart Devices
