  2. 2. VOICE OF THE VERB • It shows whether the subject of the sentence is the doer or the receiver of the action.
  3. 3. ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VOICE
  4. 4. ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SENTENCES • A sentence is written in active voice when the subject of the sentence performs the action in the sentence. • A sentence is written in passive voice when the subject of the sentence has an action done to it by someone or something else.
  5. 5. e.g. The girl washes the dog. (Active) e.g. The dog is washed by the girl. (Passive)
  6. 6. CHANGING SENTENCES IN THE ACTIVE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE INTO PASSIVE • When the active verb is in the simple present tense, we make passive verb forms with is/am/are + past participle form of the verb. • Note that the object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. • The subject of the active verb becomes the object of the passive verb.
  7. 7. Example: • She writes a story. (Active) (Subject – she; verb – writes; object – a story) We have already learned that the object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.
  8. 8. • A story is written by her. (Passive) Note : the object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.
  9. 9. • She adores kids. (Active) • (Subject – she; verb – adores; object – kids) • Kids are adored by her. (Passive) Note : the object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.
  10. 10. Tense Active voice Passive voice Simple present tense Verb form: first form of the verb Verb form: is / am / are + past participle form of the verb They speak English here. English is spoken here. He speaks English. English is spoken by him.
  11. 11. ACTIVITY These are all written in active voice. Change each sentence into passive voice. 1. The actors perform the play of Shakespeare. 2. A stone breaks the window. 3. The boys push the tree. 4. James climb the ladder. 5. Sam bake a big cake.
  12. 12. ACTIVITY These are all written in passive voice. Change each sentence into active voice. 1. The football is kicked by Luke. 2. The knives are left by Julie. 3. The milk is knocked by a cat. 4. The car is driven into a wall by a naughty child. 5. The windows are washed by me.
