Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

he Cannabis é um personagem fictício e este livro pretende
ser apenas um guia de informações ficcionais e científicas,
abertas ao princípio do contraditório. É preciso de saber que
a maconha utilizada por pacientes, de forma legalizada, enquanto
remédio, pretende ser um suplemento, e não um substituto, para
os cuidados e tratamentos de médicos profissionais. Jamais utilize
a maconha, para tratar de uma doença séria. Apenas priorize em
sua vida o uso da maconha, como um remédio, se autorizado

Uma rapidinha
E
m meu país, tão distante de Portugal, uma rapidinha pode
conter um teor sexual perigoso sem a tal camisinha.
Rimou?
Longe disso, leitores, eu pretendo rimar nesta prosa, a fim de
dizer que “Uma rapidinha” serviu-me, para explicar a toda gente
(da nossa tribo) que me lê, e a toda falsa gente, conservadoramente
sem ciência, que há de me criticar, sobre a genética literária que
pariu este livro: esta é a obra de um herói maconheiro, o nosso
autêntico Che Cannabis, que me surgiu há anos, quando eu era
agente penitenciário, completinha da silva, a danada veio!
Não precisei de criar patente, apenas cataloguei a vida de
Che Cannabis, e de seus loucos feitos heróicos em verso e prosa,
desconselhando os seus caminhos, pois cada ser humano é o seu
caminho, a sua verdade e a sua própria vida, assim interpreto as
escrituras de Deus.
Ninguém chega a Deus se não for por aí: por si mesmo! Eu
cheguei a Deus pelos povos antigos da floresta na Toca da Raposa.
Esta obra não é capaz de alucinar toda uma estante de livros
com sua resina crítica, até penetrar no sangue e no intelecto de
toda gente curiosa de saber quem, afinal de contas, é o bicho-do-
pé desta nação. Divisor de águas, e agora de plantas, o cara é um
vegetariano politicamente incorreto.

Com cara de bicho-do-mato, Che Cannabis nasceu do nada, mas
é gente. Filho da mãe natureza é sem pai, nem Zeus. Talvez, por
isso, ele carrega o peso de querer escrever um mosaico poético e
prosaico, meio que autobiográfico.
Sendo a apologia ao crime um terrível crime, no Brasil
“democrático”, assim como o anonimato; foi aí que o nosso herói
maconheiro precisou, assim como se diz, de ser queimado até a
última ponta, por Val Valença, seu biógrafo genético (ou genérico),
seu pai-átomo. Importante foi, antes de tudo, estar quites com a
Justiça.
E, na cadeia, nosso Che poderá ler na internet o seu próprio
fim? Poderá, antes de virar pó, criptografar pedaços suculentos
do seu livro nas paredes da sua cela 21? Ele foi capaz de vencer
uma guerra contra a ignorância do povo brasileiro: oh filho
desnaturado! Herói já? Como assim?
Não é nisso que eu creio: apenas dou legado ao litígio. Hei
de ser publicado, catalogado e lido, depois queimado, Che
Cannabis? Só por causa de você hei de ser difamado e perder
a amizade da minha família? Hei de ser depredado feito uma
Nísia Floresta?
Embora autor, confesso que a ideia (sem o menor acento agora)
é dele, e, quando eu for censurado pela polícia federal, quando este
livro incitar os jovens na luta pela legalização da maconha, no Brasil,
surgirá um clone de “Che Cannabis”, ansioso feito Soussândrade, e,
em uma Holanda ou na Califórnia, escreverá literatura brasileira.
Inteligentes os leitores que plantam o senso crítico nas coisas
vividas por Che Cannabis, de agora em diante, cuidado! Che
Cannabis perdeu seu caderno manuscrito, doando-me. Eu e meu
magnífico senso comum, “Cuidado!”, durante meu trabalho como
inspetor de plantão, na guarda prisional, do Castelo da Morte,
fui engajado na missão de semear a ideia. Isso foi quando Che
Cannabis, antes da transferência para o regime aberto, prevendo

uma cilada mortal, entregou-me suas anotações, aqui publicadas,
e me disse em um tom convicto de existir um sol maior para o povo
brasileiro no dia em que a maconha for liberada para o plantio:
— Ao Prelo, por favor! Vi, vim e venci.
Respondi com gosto e com vibrato na voz:
— Agora mesmo, Che Cannabis! Yeah!
Mas, que coisas iriam ser publicadas sobre Che Cannabis?
Sexos, drogas e “Roots rock reggae”, de Bob Marley?
Não é isso?
Preciso de, urgentemente, tipo uma rapidinha, dizer que, se,
agora, você for capaz de ler “Meu pé de maconha”, em primeira
mão, aproveite esse momento para fazer a cabeça de pensamentos
científicos, mas subjetivos todos. Outra coisa, você só terá
permissão governamental de plantá-lo mentalmente.
Eu sou Val Valença, e dou fé que o herói realmente existiu fora
daquele manuscrito que tive acesso, além e aquém da ficção.
Não sei do resto. Tudo virou pó, menos este mosaico sobre um
homem que se autodenominou, o Che Cannabis; não revelarei
seu nome por causa dos direitos autorais, já que os quero para
criar uma futura ONG de leitores usuários de maconha que amam
estudar a língua portuguesa.
Mas eu, virando um autor dos outros e um rebelde com causa,
depois de ler o caderno de um maconheiro deste nível, fiquei
pálido até hoje e vim anunciar a boa-nova, antes que seja tarde
e eu vire pó também. As partes do caderno, ou dessa boa-nova,
foram levadas do Castelo da Morte até minha casa, há uma década,
e só agora saiu do prelo, graças à editora que me conduziu pela
paciência de Jó.
Subir na vida de degrau em degrau, eis o que eu miro.
Eu sei que ter um pé de maconha é um crime no Brasil, e que,
embora falemos de trás das portas que nos abrem para um digital
século XXI, cheio de desafios e embates ideológicos, com seu raio

laser e seu latrocínio, nós é que somos ainda leigos no assunto da
maconha.
Eu sei que um pé de maconha só pode existir, se for no papel,
na ideia. Um agricultor será condenado por plantar uma erva
antiquíssima, chamada cânhamo, que serve para fazer sapato e
roupa, serve como fibra, de suas sementes californianos fazem
leite, sorvetes, bolos, e, recentemente, descobriram uma forma de
fazer um lubrificante sexual com a maconha. Para uma rapidinha
como esta aqui, eu fui beber na literatura de Che Cannabis.
Engoli (ou plagiei) tudo que ele fumou de ideias loucas e cheias
de resinas, para me inspirar literariamente. Missão impossível?
Talvez não saiba responder, Che Cannabis sabe sim, primata!
Habitante das cavernas e das árvorés, filho do escuro da floresta,
o dono da toca da raposa.
Digo mais, pela resina de
viver e ser feliz sem filosofia
eurocêntrica, foi que Che
Cannabis sobreviveu. Digo
ainda mais: logo depois de
ele pegar em armas de fogo e
de abraçar poemas e letras de
músicas, longe de virar esse tal
de Camões, Cannabis sonhou
com o dito cujo, que sou eu,
publicando este livro. Por outro
lado, eu, que vivo de remédios
farmacológicos, dedicarei esta
obra de arte literária aos meus
contemporâneos brasileiros e
às grandes brasileiras, mães e
filhas da pátria divididíssima
ideologicamente pela legaliza-
ção ou não da erva da Índia.

Ele encontrou primeiro uma vontade, depois um fundamento
científico, eita danado Che Cannabis! Em pleno carnaval, de 2016,
busquei as letras verdianas para ser seu copista, seu monge
predileto, mais que Lutero e Albert Einstein é pouco!
Emocionado com sua escrita, ligada ao poema e à canção de
música, no re-encontro com a banda de reggae, Che Cannabis quis
ser o Val Valença, por um momento que durou um livro, ou por
um livro que durou sete ou seis partes. Ser eu que sou um cantor
desafinado da banda de reggae e polifonia, o AlfaRudá, eis o seu
sonho de verão. Cantor e guarda, não mais um esquizofrênico.
Essa seria sua última sensação de doença? Sua última realidade?
Agora, bem aqui, virei um copista tirado a escritor.

Ave, Maria, cheia de graça que ele não ama mais ser de Deus.
Quem? Resposta: o Che Cannabis! Foi ele quem nasceu, quando
os capitalistas e socialistas viabilizaram a internet pra massa e
abriram mão da Guerra Fria; ele quem fumou da nanotecnologia
dos robôs e de suas resinosas inteligências artificiais, depois de
comer pipocas de microondas.
Os robôs não se drogam, se não forem programados pelos
homens.
Por outro lado, Deus é o átomo da célula na epiderme da mãe
natureza e só isso, repetia-me Che Cannabis, enquanto preso:
— Deus é a mãe natureza. Deus é o átomo da célula grudado na
epiderme de nossa mãe natureza.
Em outras palavras, o Che Cannabis nasceu na encruzilhada
da macumba, e, que nem um bicho-de-pé, ou lagarta de fogo,
amadas taturanas, no sítio de pés-de-maconha, ele absorveu os
fluídos de uma ideia tatoo governamental, lançada na mídia: Che
era filho de uma doença Zika de viver, feito da AIDS, e abortado
na louca gravidez de ideias científicas: maconha faz bem sim,
senhor!

Diz a mãe natureza: “A Microcefalia é minha cúmplice”. Che me
saiu com uma: “que é um nome bonito é, mas serve pra um diabo
feio danado no feto”.
Foi assim, então, que, na Zika e na AIDS, a maconha corroeu os
neurônios de Che Cannabis, deixando o nosso herói meditar na
proeza de não se pensar em nada.
Como era difícil, eu não sabia de
Alberto Caeiro, poeta da natureza,
resolvi dar cabo a essa obra custe-
me o que me custar: podia ser
processado, feito Kafka, e perder
meu emprego de professor, tipo
Dostoiévski, em “Crime e Castigo”,
mas eu precisava de escrever este
livro pela simples questão: Che
Cannabis perdeu honra cedo.
Voltando ao assunto, Che
sabia que muitas drogas contra a
depressãonãopassavamdemedidas
tomadas pelas autoridades públicas
no Brasil, as chamadas medidas
preventivas. Canalhas de terno e
gravata! Escravocratas disfarçados
de democráticos! Saibam que só
não digo a verdade, pois ela não
existe para ser dita. Digo que foi Che
Cannabis quem plantou essa coisa
toda, mas em metáforas, que é para
o doutor não reclamar.
O meu psiquiatra disse que faria
muito bem ajudar o Che Cannabis a
ser o que foi e o que não foi: nome

disso é ficção. Mas a minha psicóloga não concordou com a ideia
do psiquiatra, sem saber que a ideia vinha dele e não de mim.
Diante da ficção, a realidade foi ver “Meu pé de maconha” que
nasceu macho e virou fêmea, pronto para degustação.
Convido-te a conhecer o que havia de mais simples e complexo
naquele manuscrito de Che Cannabis. Entre uma ou outra frase,
seus neurônios entrarão em choque, a fim de responder: Che
Cannabis é criminoso ou poeta?
Che fumou maconha dentro da cadeia. Isto não seria nenhum
absurdo,comtantailegalidadedentroeforadasprisõesbrasileiras.
Che Cannabis via Nietzsche
A questão é que o escritor Che
Cannabis era ainda um professor, e
também, um guarda prisional de dar
gosto. Depressão dos infernos?
Será?
Safadeza?
O que segue são fatos que eu
compreendi, através do caderno de
Che Cannabis, o nosso herói e símio,
mas que agora eu teimo em desvendar
que macaco é esse Super-homem.
Que coisa! Além do homem?
Super-homem não fuma maconha,
medica-se. Nietzsche não vacila.
Che Cannabis de tão humano,
tornou-se demasiadamente humano.
Che Cannabis é um Além-do-homem,
maconheiro por si só.Che Cannabis
brinca de símio no tronco da
sapopema.

eu?
Parece, mas não é...
Eu não sei o que se passa na cabeça
do Che Cannabis.
Ele usou muita gente real nesse
livro.
Cabe agora dizer a toda essa gente
real, que Che Cannabis trouxe a gente
pra morar dentro de um livro.
Além de real, o livro nos leva pra
imortalidade.
Eu ficarei imortal com o AlfaRudá
e agradeço a galera toda.
