“In cloud computing, the word cloud (also phrased as "the cloud") is
used as a metaphor for "the Internet," so the phrase cloud
computing means "a type of Internet-based computing," where different
services — such as servers, storage and applications —are delivered to an
organization's computers and devices through the Internet.”

scalable IT-related capabilities are provided as a service

HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF CLOUD COMPUTING
 Concept evolved in 1950(IBM) called RJE (Remote Job Entry Process).
 In 2006 Amazon provided First public cloud AWS(Amazon Web Service).
 Cloud computing is a natural evolution of the widespread adoption of virtualization, service-
oriented architecture, autonomic, and utility computing.
 Details are abstracted from end-users, who no longer have need for expertise in, or control over, the
technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them.
 The actual term "cloud" borrows from telephony in that telecommunications companies, who until
the 1990s offered primarily dedicated point-to-point data circuits, began offering Virtual Private
Network (VPN) services with comparable quality of service but at a much lower cost.
 In analogy to above usage the word cloud was used as a metaphor for the Internet and a standardized cloud-like
shape was used to denote a network on telephony schematics and later to depict the Internet in computer network
diagrams.
 The cloud symbol was used to represent networks of computing equipment in the original ARPANET by as early as
1977,[14] and the CSNET by 1981[15]—both predecessors to the Internet itself.
 The term cloud has been used to refer to platforms for distributed computing.

services that benefits personal users.
 Users can take advantages to these cloud service to store
music ,video and other files in the cloud .
 Provides themselves with helpful manner.
 For paid the subscription fees.
 Users may have to fill out personal profiles or surveys
related to the service.

 In library the “Cloud” words generally refer internet,
thus cc implies using the internet for all your
computing needs.
 Cloud computing is latest buzzwords in the word of
library and information technology.
 In the library the cc means the “cloud” itself is a set
of web based computing resources they delivers the
demand through location of the users.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CLOUD COMPUTING
 On-demand self-service.
• A consumer can unilaterally provision computing capabilities such as server time and network storage as needed
automatically, without requiring human interaction with a service provider.
 Broad network access.
• Capabilities are available over the network and accessed through standard mechanisms that promote use by
heterogeneous thin or thick client platforms (e.g., mobile phones, laptops, and PDAs) as well as other
traditional or cloud based software services.
 Resource pooling.
• The provider’s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model, with
different physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned according to consumer demand.
 Rapid elasticity.
• Capabilities can be rapidly and elastically provisioned - in some cases automatically - to quickly scale out; and
rapidly released to quickly scale in.
• To the consumer, the capabilities available for provisioning often appear to be unlimited and can be purchased in
any quantity at any time.
 Measured service.
• Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource usage by leveraging a metering capability at some
level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service.
• Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported - providing transparency for both the provider and
consumer of the service.

 Moving to cloud computing may reduce the cost of managing and maintaining your it systems.
 Rather than purchasing the expensive systems and equipments for your business, you can reduce your costs by using the resources of your
cloud computing service provider. You may be able to reduce your operating costs because:
1. the cost of system upgrades, new hardware and software may be included in your contract
2. you no longer to pay wages for expert staffs
3. your energy consumptions cost may be reduced
4.there are fewer time delays

Your business can scale up or scale down your operation and storage needs quickly to suit your situation, flexibility as your needs change. Rather
than purchasing and installing expensive upgrades yourself, your cloud computer service provider can handle this for you. Using the cloud frees
up your time so you can get on with running your business.

Protecting your data ands systems is an important part of your business continuity planning. Whether you experience a natural disaster, power
failure or other crisis, having your data stored in the cloud ensures it is backed up and protected in a secure and safe location. Being able to access
your data quickly allows you to conduct business as usual, minimizing any downtime and loss of productivity.
Collaboration efficiency
Collaboration in a cloud environment gives your business the ability to communicate and share more easily outside of the traditional methods. If
you are working on a project across different locations, you could use cloud computing to give employees, contractors and third parties access to

Cloud computing allows employees to be more flexible in the work practices. For example, you have the ability to access data from home, on

your system will regularly updated with the latest technology. This could include up-to-date versions of software, as well as upgrades to servers
and computer processing power.
Disadvantages of cloud computing
Downtime
This may be one of the worst disadvantage of cloud computing. No cloud provider even the very best could claim immunity to
service outages. Cloud computing systems are internet based, which means your access is fully dependent on your internet
connection. And like any hardware clod platform themselves can fail for any one of a thousand reasons .
Security in the cloud
The major other issue in the cloud is that of security issues. Before adopting this technology, you should know that you will be
surrendering all your companies sensitive information to a third party cloud service provider. This could potentially but your
company to great risk. Hence, you need to make absolutely sure that you choose the most reliable service provider, who will keep
your information completely secure.
Technical issues
Though it is true that information and data on the cloud can be accessed anytime and anywhere at all, there are when this system
can have serious dysfunction. You should be aware of the fact that this technology is always prone to outages and other technical
issues
Prone to attack
Storing information in the cloud could make your company vulnerable to external hack attacks and threats. As you
are well aware, nothing on the internet is well secure and hence there is always the lurking possibility of stealth of
sensitive data

in which you are partially or fully depend on your
vendor.
Currently cloud service are categorize in 3
different types:
1. (IAAS)
2. (PAAS)
3. (SAAS)
Let’s see each Cloud Service in details.
Also called as Hardware as a Service
 In IAAS, basically you just use vendor hardware and run your own
application along with required OS & runtime. These vendors will
provide off-site servers, storage, and networking hardware, for rent. You
will use these hardware directly from internet. IAAS avoids maintenance
costs and office space.
Main Vendors:
Amazon ECx, Rackspace Cloud, GoGrid Cloud
Hosting, Google App Engine, Nirvanix Storage Delivery
Network, Terremark Enterprise Cloud, VMware vCloud
 Also called as Middleware
 You depend on vendor for hardware and application run time
and just spend your energy on your application. Most common
examples are Website hosting, Storage Solutions, Web App
management, application development, collaboration tools, etc.
PAAS vendors provide various solutions i.e. OS, virtualized
servers, Single signon service etc.
Main Vendors:
Microsoft (Windows Azure), Amazon S3, VMWare, Rackspace,
Red Hat, Google App Engine, Heroku, AppFog
 Any application hosted on remote server that can be
accessed over the
Internet through a web browser
is considered SaaS.
 Vendors: Netflix, MOG,
Google Apps, Box.net, Dropbox,
GoToMeeting,Cisco’s WebEx, Salesforce’s CRM, ADP,
Workday and SuccessFactors.

Cloudis a browser-basedoperating systemcreatedby GoodOS LLC,a LosAngeles-basedcorporation.The companyinitiallylaunched a Linuxdistribution calledOS
which is heavilybasedon Ubuntu,nowin itsthirdincarnation.
1.ZeroPC
ZeroPC offers you 1GB of free storage and lets you to connect Cloud storage services like
Box,DropBox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, SugarSync and 4Shared for access to your
paperwork. ZeroPC is also available on the Android, iPhone and iPad, giving you access
while on the go.
2. Jolicloud
Jolicloud offers you Joli OS, which you can download and install in your system (even if
it’s 10 years old) or use it in the browser. Joli OS provides you with the full cloud
experience – keep and use your favorite apps any time, any where. Jolicloud has over
15,000 web apps you can access using the system.
3. Glide OS
Glide OS is a good choice if you’re collaborating for a group project. Glide team offers 30GB of free storage and you can add a
total of 6 users in your account. The OS is not very pretty but is quite useful; it has additional features like email and profiles
as well as basic tools like Calendar, Notes, Text editor, Presentation maker, etc required for your paperwork.
4. SilveOS
SilveOS is a cloud operating system built on Silverlight. You can run it in
any browser with Silverlight installed. It has many built-in apps which let you write,
listen to music, make notes, and even play Solitaire. You can also install Silverlight
apps from the web in SilveOS.
5. iSpaces Cloud Computer
iSpaces has only the basic features for you to manage your work like Browser, File
manager, Notes, Office suite (Zoho office), etc. It also has 3 Workspaces accessible
from the task bar. t lets you keep your working environments organized with quick
access from one Workspace to the other.
6. Cloudo
Although in beta stage, Cloudo is an interesting operating system built to run in your
browser. It is packed with apps like Mail, Calendar, Audio Player, RSS reader, Contact
manager, Word processor, Notepad, Command Line Interpreter, Finder (to search files)
etc. It provides a good interface like an operating system where you can runcommands,
install apps, play music
7. xOS
xOS doesn’t provide a lot of customization options but they do provide a good collection of apps for personal use. It offers Web browser, File
manager, Text editor, Notes, Calendar, Paint, Email client, and Canvas Rider (a bicycle game) among others.
8. ZimDesk
ZimDesk is a cloud operating system full of apps and features. It has got Custom wallpapers, Office Suite, Contact Manager, RSS reader, Calendar,
CONCLUSION
So, while cloud computing is really great and you’re probably already using it, either for business of for
personal means, here’s what we’ve learned from taking a look at the pros and cons:
 Cloud computing is a really cheap way for companies to have all the resources they need in once
place.
 It’s a much better way to spread your resources, and it becomes easier to access things from longer
distances.
But…
 Is cloud computing really all that safe? For instance, while cloud computing has backups, if
something was to go wrong… do you have your own personal backup?
 Is cloud computing as private as you think it is? Is your data secure or can anyone access it?
So there you have it! Everything you need to know about cloud computing; what it is, how to use it,
and some pros and cons!

HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF CLOUD COMPUTING  Concept evolved in 1950(IBM) called RJE (Remote Job Entry Process).  In 2006 Amazon provided First public cloud AWS(Amazon Web Service).  Cloud computing is a natural evolution of the widespread adoption of virtualization, service- oriented architecture, autonomic, and utility computing.  Details are abstracted from end-users, who no longer have need for expertise in, or control over, the technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them.  The actual term "cloud" borrows from telephony in that telecommunications companies, who until the 1990s offered primarily dedicated point-to-point data circuits, began offering Virtual Private Network (VPN) services with comparable quality of service but at a much lower cost.  In analogy to above usage the word cloud was used as a metaphor for the Internet and a standardized cloud-like shape was used to denote a network on telephony schematics and later to depict the Internet in computer network diagrams.  The cloud symbol was used to represent networks of computing equipment in the original ARPANET by as early as 1977,[14] and the CSNET by 1981[15]—both predecessors to the Internet itself.  The term cloud has been used to refer to platforms for distributed computing. CHARACTERISTICS OF CLOUD COMPUTING  On-demand self-service. • A consumer can unilaterally provision computing capabilities such as server time and network storage as needed automatically, without requiring human interaction with a service provider.  Broad network access. • Capabilities are available over the network and accessed through standard mechanisms that promote use by heterogeneous thin or thick client platforms (e.g., mobile phones, laptops, and PDAs) as well as other traditional or cloud based software services.  Resource pooling. • The provider’s computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model, with different physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned according to consumer demand.  Rapid elasticity. • Capabilities can be rapidly and elastically provisioned - in some cases automatically - to quickly scale out; and rapidly released to quickly scale in. • To the consumer, the capabilities available for provisioning often appear to be unlimited and can be purchased in any quantity at any time.  Measured service. • Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource usage by leveraging a metering capability at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service. • Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported - providing transparency for both the provider and consumer of the service.

Whether you experience a natural disaster, power failure or other crisis, having your data stored in the cloud ensures it is backed up and protected in a secure and safe location. Collaboration efficiency Collaboration in a cloud environment gives your business the ability to communicate and share more easily outside of the traditional methods. Cloud computing systems are internet based, which means your access is fully dependent on your internet connection. And like any hardware clod platform themselves can fail for any one of a thousand reasons . Security in the cloud The major other issue in the cloud is that of security issues. Before adopting this technology, you should know that you will be surrendering all your companies sensitive information to a third party cloud service provider. This could potentially but your company to great risk. Hence, you need to make absolutely sure that you choose the most reliable service provider, who will keep your information completely secure. Technical issues Though it is true that information and data on the cloud can be accessed anytime and anywhere at all, there are when this system can have serious dysfunction. You should be aware of the fact that this technology is always prone to outages and other technical issues Prone to attack Storing information in the cloud could make your company vulnerable to external hack attacks and threats. As you are well aware, nothing on the internet is well secure and hence there is always the lurking possibility of stealth of sensitive data

Most common examples are Website hosting, Storage Solutions, Web App management, application development, collaboration tools, etc. PAAS vendors provide various solutions i.e. OS, virtualized servers, Single signon service etc. Main Vendors: Microsoft (Windows Azure), Amazon S3, VMWare, Rackspace, Red Hat, Google App Engine, Heroku, AppFog

ZeroPC is also available on the Android, iPhone and iPad, giving you access while on the go. 2. Jolicloud Jolicloud offers you Joli OS, which you can download and install in your system (even if it’s 10 years old) or use it in the browser. Joli OS provides you with the full cloud experience – keep and use your favorite apps any time, any where. Jolicloud has over 15,000 web apps you can access using the system. 3. Glide OS Glide OS is a good choice if you’re collaborating for a group project. Glide team offers 30GB of free storage and you can add a total of 6 users in your account. The OS is not very pretty but is quite useful; it has additional features like email and profiles as well as basic tools like Calendar, Notes, Text editor, Presentation maker, etc required for your paperwork.
  • 27. 4. SilveOS SilveOS is a cloud operating system built on Silverlight. You can run it in any browser with Silverlight installed. It has many built-in apps which let you write, listen to music, make notes, and even play Solitaire. You can also install Silverlight apps from the web in SilveOS. 5. iSpaces Cloud Computer iSpaces has only the basic features for you to manage your work like Browser, File manager, Notes, Office suite (Zoho office), etc. It also has 3 Workspaces accessible from the task bar. t lets you keep your working environments organized with quick access from one Workspace to the other. 6. Cloudo Although in beta stage, Cloudo is an interesting operating system built to run in your browser. It is packed with apps like Mail, Calendar, Audio Player, RSS reader, Contact manager, Word processor, Notepad, Command Line Interpreter, Finder (to search files) etc. It provides a good interface like an operating system where you can runcommands, install apps, play music 7. xOS xOS doesn’t provide a lot of customization options but they do provide a good collection of apps for personal use. It offers Web browser, File manager, Text editor, Notes, Calendar, Paint, Email client, and Canvas Rider (a bicycle game) among others. 8. ZimDesk ZimDesk is a cloud operating system full of apps and features. It has got Custom wallpapers, Office Suite, Contact Manager, RSS reader, Calendar,

CONCLUSION So, while cloud computing is really great and you’re probably already using it, either for business of for personal means, here’s what we’ve learned from taking a look at the pros and cons:  Cloud computing is a really cheap way for companies to have all the resources they need in once place.  It’s a much better way to spread your resources, and it becomes easier to access things from longer distances. But…  Is cloud computing really all that safe? For instance, while cloud computing has backups, if something was to go wrong… do you have your own personal backup?  Is cloud computing as private as you think it is? Is your data secure or can anyone access it? So there you have it! Everything you need to know about cloud computing; what it is, how to use it, and some pros and cons!

March 2006 and August 2006 :- S3 and EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) - infrastructure-as-a-service provider - making core computing infrastructure service (Cloud infrastructure) - pricing model ‘pay-per-use’ - shift of Amazon from being just a retailer to a strong player in the technology space - EC2 as a commercial web service that allows small companies and individuals to rent computers on which to run their own computer applications. April 2008 :- Launch of Google App Engine - first pure play technology company into the cloud computing market (browser-based enterprise applications) - a developer tool enables you to run your web applications on Google’s infrastructure. - Google App’s features - Dynamic web serving, persistent storage, automatic scaling and load balancing, Google API’s for authentication users and sending email November 2009 :- Launch of Windows Azure Beta belonged to Microsoft (the same concept as Google App) 2010 :- Concerns about the security of their corporate data in the cloud.
