Dark web

Dark web
MEANING
Parts of the internet that are
encrypted (= use a secret code),
cannot be found using ordinary search engines, and
sometimes used for criminal activity
DEFINITION:
 The dark web refers to encrypted online content that is
not indexed by conventional search engines.
 Specific browsers, such as Tor Browser, are required to
reach the dark web.
 As with the early Internet, the dark web has also
gained a reputation as a haven for illegal activities.
 The dark web helps people to maintain privacy and
freely express their views.
 it does not appear through regular Internet browsing
activities.
HOW TO ACCESS
Dark net websites are accessible only through networks such
as
Tor("The Onion Routing" project) and
I2P ("Invisible Internet Project").
Tor browser and Tor-accessible sites are widely used among
the dark net users and can be identified by the domain
".onion
Tor focuses on providing anonymous access to the Internet,
I2P specializes in allowing anonymous hosting of websites.
ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES
 illegal trade
 forums
 media exchange for pedophiles and
 terrorists.
At the same time traditional websites have created
alternative accessibility for the Tor browser in efforts to
connect with their users. Republican, for example,
launched a new version of its website available
exclusively to Tor users.
PRIVACY
 Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to
seclude themselves or information about themselves,
and thereby express themselves selectively.
(When something is private to a person, it usually
means that something is inherently special or
sensitive to them. The domain of privacy partially
overlaps with security, which can include the
concepts of appropriate use, as well as protection
of information.)
PASSWORD
 A one-password — or weak-password — approach
places the user at significant risk of fraud, theft, and
professional liability
 Password reuse is a really big problem, “Once people
find a good password, they’ll continue to reuse that
password exactly, or variations of it. This is dangerous
because the cybercriminal, once he has your password,
can very easily access your accounts and the loyalty
points, cash, and/or personally identifiable
information within.”
ADVANTAGES
 The dark web helps people to maintain privacy and
freely express their views. Privacy is essential for many
innocent people terrorized by stalkers and other
criminals.
 The increasing tendency of potential employers to
track posts on social media can also make it difficult to
engage in honest discussions publicly.
 The popularity of the dark web with criminals makes
it a perfect way for undercover police officers to
communicate.
DISADVANTAGES
 The dark web empowers ordinary people, but some
people will inevitably abuse that power.
 The dark web can make it easier to commit some of
worst crimes. For example, the combination of the the
dark web and cryptocurrencies theoretically makes it
much easier to hire someone to commit a murder.
 The dark web promises privacy to its users, it can also
be used to violate the privacy of others. Private photos,
medical records, and financial information have all
been stolen and shared on the dark web.
