Training as an Art and a Science

  1. 1. Training as an art.... and a science A guide to providing training that makes an impact Content provided by Christine Deeb Poccia,   TMS Training and Development Services
  2. 2. Training is a long road, a continuous process of learning....
  3. 3. Here are some tips to facilitating training sessions that are valuable to the participant and create an atmosphere of learning where the information can stick...
  4. 4. Get prepared- avoid being an absent minded professor
  5. 5. Make an agenda! This helps your learners  know what will be expected of them during the session.
  6. 6. Have a hypothesis and a formula for what you are teaching.
  7. 7. "If you can't explain something simply, you don't understand it well enough." Einstein Become an expert yourself before you try to teach others.
  8. 8. Practice what you teach. Be ready for questions.
  9. 9. Master the art of questions. Give your students a safe forum to ask questions. Table items you need to look into.
  10. 10. Don't over-teach it. Let them drive. There is nothing like hands on experience to learn something new.
  11. 11. Once they get it, do it again... and again. Repetition is a great teacher
  12. 12. Don't guess... Test and Assess The best way to know if your learners understand and are ready to move on is to provide a chance for assessment along the way. Assessments also ensure you can reinforce as you go.
  13. 13. Got a case of sleepy learners? Learn how to keep them engaged!
  14. 14. Add some fun! Don't just class-room teach. Its hard to learn sitting in a chair and listening all day. Brainteasers! Puzzles! Team Projects
  15. 15. Don't underestimate the impact a break can have. Pepper breaks in along with additional activities that get your learners up and moving whenever the class gets restless or seems overwhelmed.
  16. 16. Mix it up. You may have a goal of "x" amount of lecturing for a certain module, but it's important to read your students. If they are disengaged, they won't be learning. Be flexible ...you'll end up with the same or better results (participants with knowledge!) using a mixed variety of training methods.
  17. 17. Keep an open mind. Some people learn differently. Change and adjust as you need to.
  18. 18. Staying current will increase your credibility! Update and refresh your materials.
  19. 19. Break through! Just remember, its their training...not yours. Adjust, change and mold it to fit your learner!
