Today will be talking about digital archives, and this in the context of the museum collection Present the concept of a living collection as a desired goal
Digital records: Insufficient knowledge –
Digital records: Insufficient knowledge – what are digital records, what do they require, relatively short history (1960-70’s, 1990’s, 2000’s) Partial representation – requires selection of objects Limited resources – requires sustainable resources, no TIME to do it all Discontinuous effort – adopting digital collections into the organization

Starting with the context: there have been a couple of recent reports in the Netherlands about the degree to which collections are represented digitally, and made available on-line. For conservation purposes, on-site is important – though for community would be great to exchange data, learn from eachother. Museums reported 81% of the collections to be accessible on-site

Acquisition and ingestion is where data about preservation and conservation would be integrated in the system ADS = archeology data service
Active: if you leave it it dies Open: because of digital nature, it can always be edited Sharing: you can’t do it alone, no time, no resources you learn from others
