Using a table, obtaining such data helps us identify who
the audience might be, what they are interested in and
what else they might like. For example, when producing
a programme or a magazine, the content and design is
constructed according to their target audience and
where they appear in this grid.
When launching a new product audience research is
key to the product’s success. Conducting audience
research using a site such as BARB for a programme or
film, would inform us what time a similar product is
on and what type of channel it is shown on. This
would enable us to identify the best way to capture
the correct target audience.
Focus groups and questionnaires help us to tweak and
adapted a specific area of the programme before it is
officially aired.
Task 1
For my unit 21 production, my original target audience
was a large audience with the age range between 16 –
40. However, looking in more detail, I would like and
would hope to aim my ‘SoccerAM’ programme at the
‘Lower middle’ social class (Grade C1). My product
would suit this audience as research shows they are
most likely to watch popular shows on popular channels
and are attracted to the ‘Gossip’ radio and magazine. Of
course this is all irrelevant unless they are into sport and
specifically football, but if all of the above apply as well
as the sporting interest, this is the perfect target
audience.
Task 2
• During my production I had to follow many constraints.
I had to make sure that my choice of music was
appropriate to be shown on TV and be age appropriate
for my target audience.
• I also had to make sure that there were no racist or
sexist remarks, as this would be again unacceptable for
TV and ‘Sky’ wouldn’t allow it to be aired.
• Furthermore, I used many tracks of music, recorded by
famous artists and in order to use their music, I had to
write permission letters to their record companies who
owned the right to the songs. I had to state that my
video was not created for any financial gain and would
be put online (YouTube).
• I also used some original introduction clips to each
section of the programme. This was hard to recreate an
animation for myself and would have been very time
consuming and without much practice may have ruined
the quality of my video. Therefore, I wrote to Sky and
‘SoccerAM’ asking for the consent to use their animated
sketches – and again had to state that my product was
going to be put on YouTube and was not created for any
financial gain.
‘Average audience member’
The age range for my product is
between 16-40. This is a large age
range as people of all ages are into
football and there is no reason why
my product isn't suitable for a large
target market.
My product was aimed and able
to cater for both genders in my
target audience. Men and
women can both equally enjoy
and show a passion in football
hence, why the ‘SoccerAM’ show
is such a success and so too –
would my re-creation would.
There is no recognized ‘dress code’ for any of
my audience members -because of the wide age
range.
For males, it could be anything ranging from
trackies and t-shirts to smart casual wear and
suits.
For females, it again could feature casual dress
such as trackies and t-shirts to again,
casual/smart wear such as dresses and suits.
Their musical tastes
would be popular,
top of the charts
songs for the
younger end of the
market and
older/childhood
music for the more
adult end of the
market.
What attracts my target audience?
Format:
The format for my video is of course – all based on football, and will appeal and
attract any passionate football fan. It is a friendly, informal format to a television
show and reaches my target audience correctly.
‘Banter’:
My product features lots of banter between the presenters and what would be a ‘live
audience. This is a key feature for my show as this is what makes the original show
‘informal’ and interesting to watch – so to attract my target audience, I had to do
the same.
Music:
The music I used is a mixture of popular tracks, and recognized trademark music
from smaller artists. I used popular, top of the charts songs that would attract and be
recognizable to the younger target audiences. I also kept the original tracks that
feature on every show to keep that true ‘SoccerAM’ feel and will be instantly
recognizable when switching between channels.
Content:
The content and approach to my show is what appeals to my target audience. The
show will only appeal to audience members that have strong interests in football –
therefore it is a well defined ‘niche’ market. The genre of my show also makes it
more appealing to a wider audience – the entertaining content and interesting
scenes make it a more enjoyable show than a ‘highlights show’.
Task 1 - Survey
I believe that the questions that
feature in this survey are the most
important and enable me to
accurately evaluate my production.
Data:
I asked a spread of 8 people to
honestly fill in this survey and here are
a few of my results:
• 7/8 candidates thought that my
show was ‘Enjoyable’
• On average, my show received a
score of 9/10
• On average, the favourite section
to show was either ‘Unbelievable
Tekkers’ or ‘Crossbar Challenge’.
This was because these were the
most entertaining to watch and
were very well filmed, edited and
put together.
Task 2 – Focus group
My focus group consisted of relevant candidates – 2
males interested in football, 1 female interested in all
sport and 1 male that was only interested rugby. These
are the type of people that my programme are aimed at
and their response will indicate and reflect on the
majority of my target audience.
Audience Report
How have different ages, genders etc responded to your
product?
All ages and genders have had different reviews on my product. The students at
school (16 years old) all enjoyed my ‘SoccerAM’ show. This was mainly because of my
young, comical content in the show and the student were all interested in sport of
some sort. Some more interested in football than others but they all enjoyed the
style and approach to the sport and said ‘the content is appealing to any sporting
interests’. I also asked my teachers and parents to watch and give feedback on my
product. These candidates represented the middle to top-end of my target audience.
This gave me slightly different results as these candidates has different interests and
backgrounds with sport.
The females of my audience thought the show was ‘entertaining’. Even though they
were not ‘heavily interested’ in sport (specifically football) my show still met their
requirements for a sport TV show.
The males were all interested and said ‘I would watch this show on a regular basis’.
This tells me that males are ‘easier to please’ and would be best suited to my show.
Were you surprised with the results?
I
wasn’t too surprised with my results. I had predicted and therefore aimed my show
at the audience members that were ‘boys interested in football’. However, the
majority of the females that ‘enjoyed’ and it tells me that my style, content and
approach was well designed to suit a wide range audience.
Do your results show that your product has reached your
desired target audience?
Yes these results show that my product has reached my target audience. The reviews
tell me that they were entertained by my show, and that all ages and genders tell me
that they were entertained by my show – just the response that I needed.

Unit 4 presentation

  • 2. Using a table, obtaining such data helps us identify who the audience might be, what they are interested in and what else they might like. For example, when producing a programme or a magazine, the content and design is constructed according to their target audience and where they appear in this grid.
  • 3. When launching a new product audience research is key to the product’s success. Conducting audience research using a site such as BARB for a programme or film, would inform us what time a similar product is on and what type of channel it is shown on. This would enable us to identify the best way to capture the correct target audience. Focus groups and questionnaires help us to tweak and adapted a specific area of the programme before it is officially aired. Task 1
  • 4. For my unit 21 production, my original target audience was a large audience with the age range between 16 – 40. However, looking in more detail, I would like and would hope to aim my ‘SoccerAM’ programme at the ‘Lower middle’ social class (Grade C1). My product would suit this audience as research shows they are most likely to watch popular shows on popular channels and are attracted to the ‘Gossip’ radio and magazine. Of course this is all irrelevant unless they are into sport and specifically football, but if all of the above apply as well as the sporting interest, this is the perfect target audience. Task 2
  • 5. • During my production I had to follow many constraints. I had to make sure that my choice of music was appropriate to be shown on TV and be age appropriate for my target audience. • I also had to make sure that there were no racist or sexist remarks, as this would be again unacceptable for TV and ‘Sky’ wouldn’t allow it to be aired. • Furthermore, I used many tracks of music, recorded by famous artists and in order to use their music, I had to write permission letters to their record companies who owned the right to the songs. I had to state that my video was not created for any financial gain and would be put online (YouTube). • I also used some original introduction clips to each section of the programme. This was hard to recreate an animation for myself and would have been very time consuming and without much practice may have ruined the quality of my video. Therefore, I wrote to Sky and ‘SoccerAM’ asking for the consent to use their animated sketches – and again had to state that my product was going to be put on YouTube and was not created for any financial gain.

  • 7. ‘Average audience member’ The age range for my product is between 16-40. This is a large age range as people of all ages are into football and there is no reason why my product isn't suitable for a large target market. My product was aimed and able to cater for both genders in my target audience. Men and women can both equally enjoy and show a passion in football hence, why the ‘SoccerAM’ show is such a success and so too – would my re-creation would. There is no recognized ‘dress code’ for any of my audience members -because of the wide age range. For males, it could be anything ranging from trackies and t-shirts to smart casual wear and suits. For females, it again could feature casual dress such as trackies and t-shirts to again, casual/smart wear such as dresses and suits. Their musical tastes would be popular, top of the charts songs for the younger end of the market and older/childhood music for the more adult end of the market.
  • 8. What attracts my target audience? Format: The format for my video is of course – all based on football, and will appeal and attract any passionate football fan. It is a friendly, informal format to a television show and reaches my target audience correctly. ‘Banter’: My product features lots of banter between the presenters and what would be a ‘live audience. This is a key feature for my show as this is what makes the original show ‘informal’ and interesting to watch – so to attract my target audience, I had to do the same. Music: The music I used is a mixture of popular tracks, and recognized trademark music from smaller artists. I used popular, top of the charts songs that would attract and be recognizable to the younger target audiences. I also kept the original tracks that feature on every show to keep that true ‘SoccerAM’ feel and will be instantly recognizable when switching between channels. Content: The content and approach to my show is what appeals to my target audience. The show will only appeal to audience members that have strong interests in football – therefore it is a well defined ‘niche’ market. The genre of my show also makes it more appealing to a wider audience – the entertaining content and interesting scenes make it a more enjoyable show than a ‘highlights show’.
  • 9. Task 1 - Survey I believe that the questions that feature in this survey are the most important and enable me to accurately evaluate my production. Data: I asked a spread of 8 people to honestly fill in this survey and here are a few of my results: • 7/8 candidates thought that my show was ‘Enjoyable’ • On average, my show received a score of 9/10 • On average, the favourite section to show was either ‘Unbelievable Tekkers’ or ‘Crossbar Challenge’. This was because these were the most entertaining to watch and were very well filmed, edited and put together.
  • 10. Task 2 – Focus group My focus group consisted of relevant candidates – 2 males interested in football, 1 female interested in all sport and 1 male that was only interested rugby. These are the type of people that my programme are aimed at and their response will indicate and reflect on the majority of my target audience.
  • 11. Audience Report How have different ages, genders etc responded to your product? All ages and genders have had different reviews on my product. The students at school (16 years old) all enjoyed my ‘SoccerAM’ show. This was mainly because of my young, comical content in the show and the student were all interested in sport of some sort. Some more interested in football than others but they all enjoyed the style and approach to the sport and said ‘the content is appealing to any sporting interests’. I also asked my teachers and parents to watch and give feedback on my product. These candidates represented the middle to top-end of my target audience. This gave me slightly different results as these candidates has different interests and backgrounds with sport. The females of my audience thought the show was ‘entertaining’. Even though they were not ‘heavily interested’ in sport (specifically football) my show still met their requirements for a sport TV show. The males were all interested and said ‘I would watch this show on a regular basis’. This tells me that males are ‘easier to please’ and would be best suited to my show. Were you surprised with the results? I wasn’t too surprised with my results. I had predicted and therefore aimed my show at the audience members that were ‘boys interested in football’. However, the majority of the females that ‘enjoyed’ and it tells me that my style, content and approach was well designed to suit a wide range audience. Do your results show that your product has reached your desired target audience? Yes these results show that my product has reached my target audience. The reviews tell me that they were entertained by my show, and that all ages and genders tell me that they were entertained by my show – just the response that I needed.
