1. YORK COLLEGE/GRAPHIC DESIGNER
NOVEMBER 11 - PRESENT
I create a wide range of promotional materials to cover
the huge selection of courses and facilities the college has
to offer. My designs have to appeal to different audiences
from school leavers right up to those who have retired and
are looking to learn a new skill.
I work closely with the College’s marketing team to
produce the Further Education and Higher Education
Prospectuses. I have to strike a balance between a
contemporary designs that represent the College’s
outstanding reputation while delivering a vast amount of
information on what York College has to offer.
I provide printed and digital designs for departments
throughout College, including Ashfield’s (the York
College restaurant), The Business Development Unit and
Theatre and Sports departments. This work might be
anything from promotional posters, flyers and leaflets to
educational materials.
I am responsible for the day-to-day running of the Design
Unit, ensuring that work is correctly logged and completed
in time. I provide IT support for the team, keeping our
Macs up to date and ensuring they communicate with the
Windows-based College IT systems.
TOM BASTIMAN CV
GRAPHIC DESIGNER
ABOUT ME
I am a qualified graphic designer with experience in various
media from printed publications through web design to corporate
branding. I am always on the look out for new ways to improve my
abilities and increase my scope for design.
I enjoy working in large and small teams and also independently.
I am a self-starter and I pride myself in my ability to meet tight
deadlines while producing quality designs that fully fit my
employer or client’s brief.
I relish each job I do; each one helps me progress my abilities and
become a better designer.

WHITBY ADVERTISER/GRAPHIC & WEB DESIGNER
OCTOBER 2008 - NOVEMBER 2011
As the sole designer for the Advertiser I was responsible
for designing and producing a 96 page monthly
publication which was delivered to 15,000 homes and
businesses around the Whitby area. The Advertiser gave
me the opportunity to produce a myriad different designs,
which was excellent for my Continuous Professional
Development.
I also designed and maintained the Advertiser website. I
also implemented a digital flip book version. The website
enabled the Advertiser to be seen further afield and
promote other services offered by the magazine.
I optimised the website for search engines using SEO
techniques and increased traffic.
I worked closely with the magazine administrators
to develop a system to solve a long-standing issue of
mistakes in artwork and missed adverts in the magazine.
Thanks to effective planning, these frustrating issues
became practically non-existent.
EIGHTLEGGED.COM/WEB DESIGNER
JULY 2009 - DECEMBER 2019
Working alongside the two Web Developers, I created
functional and attractive designs for websites. The job was
a great opportunity to learn new and develop existing
skills, including optimising html/css coding, implementing
Javascript/JQuery and connecting databases to website
front ends.
I used SEO techniques, website structuring and quality
content to help increase site presence for our clients.
I gained valuable experience in dealing with clients,
discussing initial Photoshop designs and incorporating
clients’ comments into the final product using
Dreamweaver.

PROSPECTUS 2017/18
FURTHER EDUCATION PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS | This is the fifth Further
Education prospectus I have designed and produced for York College. The
design needs to be attractive and appealing to school leavers, but at the
same time needs to convey a large amount of information. The overall look
of the document is consistent with the other College publications.

Studying A Level Business Studies
Business Studies is challenging and gives us an awareness of
the major companies that we use on a day to day basis. I chose
York College as it’s in a good location, has great facilities and
students achieve high results.
I’ve enjoyed every year that I have been at College as I have always
been treated as an adult and respected by tutors who are always
there to help. In the future I plan to go to Teesside University to
study BA (Hons) Computer Game Design and Development.

AS and A Level
Economics
Two year course
Entry requirements
A minimum of 2 grade Bs and 4 grade Cs at GCSE, including a grade B
(grade 5) in Maths and a grade B (grade 5) in either English Language,
English Literature, History or Religious Studies. If students have studied
GCSE Business Studies they should have achieved a grade B.
What will I study?
Year One introduces the central economic problem, basic economic
theories and their application to the UK economy. These are then applied
to government policy objectives.
Year Two targets domestic issues such as inflation and unemployment,
contemporary economic issues such as the housing market, economic
growth and the impact of globalisation on the world economy as well as
current developments in the European Union.
It is expected that students will keep up to date with current affairs on a local
and international scale through the reading of reputable media sources.
Good course combinations
Students studying A Level Economics often take A Level Business Studies
and Maths.
What could it lead to?
The course will prepare you for higher education economics courses or
related subjects. Possible careers could include working in financial markets,
business management and corporate law.

BRANDING AND PROMOTION | Whilst initially setting up his garage,

Garage specialises in repairing and servicing German cars and Craig

word “Arch” helped keep the logo small and compact, as well as
giving it a unique and recognisable look.

LOGO DESIGN | Dan Oram, the owner of Coded Living, came to me
looking for a simple modern design that reflected the digital nature of
his business. The only desire was that I incorporated a modern-looking
San-serif font and that the overall look had a good contrast so as to
stand out. My initial designs provided a result in terms of font and after
discussing more with the owner, managed to decide on an icon that
could be associated with the company. The logo to the right is the final
design that the owner chose and uses.

designs are used across pump clips and on beer bottles nationwide.
