To illustrate what we are talking about, i will tell you a bit about the supply chain of computers. This serves as an example of what problems lie behind everyday products. There are a number of issues i will adress that are also relevant for many products for which a fair trade label exists. The major commonality is that the problems in these supply chains are mostly located in poor countries. For example, ICCO recently published a report about tropical fruits and the conditions under which these are grown. SOMO does a lot of research into a variety of products and their chains.
The production of computers and other electronic equipment is almost always outsourced to companies that noone ever heard of, and that have factories in countries such as china, thailand, mexico and the philippines.
Compeq is een leverancier in Huizhou in China. Compeq’s printplaten (PCB’s) worden gebruikt in computers, laptops en mobiele telefoons van merken als Fujitsu Siemens, Apple, Nokia, Dell en Lenovo.
Explain the approach of Procure IT Fair, and the topic of computers. Bijna iedereen heeft tegenwoordig een computer.
Institutions and companies buy a lot of computers. Often many at the same time.
1. The key is to set criteria when buying products. To make sure that the purchase is contributing to a more sustainable supply chain, and is not doing more damage to working conditions and the environment. 2. There is no label, no sustainable computer yet. But purchasers can contribute towards achieving that goal. 3. Dutch government wants to procure 100% sustainable.
SOMO today publishes a guide for the sustainable procurement of computers. This guide can be used to include social considerations when buying computers. Focused primarily on public buyers, but principles very useful for other professional buyers as well. The guide takes the reader through each phase of a professional procurement process and offers hands on tips on what criteria can be set.
Take the working conditions in the full supply chain of IT hardware into consideration Ask all tenderers to provide full transparency regarding their supply chain Avoid purchasing IT hardware from companies that violate human rights or labour standards Ensure sustainable recycling of IT hardware after end of use Inquire about the source of the metals used in their products, and the approach of the tenderer to sustainable sourcing Take possible precautions that IT hardware purchases do not lead to unreasonable pressure on wages, working hours and supply lead times
5 goals 1. Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and agrees to serve Fairtrade products (for example, in meetings, offices and canteens). 2. A range of Fairtrade products are available locally (targets vary from country to country) 3. Schools, workplaces, places of worship and community organisations support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible 4. Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community. 5. A Fairtrade steering group representing different sectors is formed to co-ordinate action around the goals and develop them over the years.
Does it work? how can it be used? Is it legally allowed? how to overcome the obstacles?
