3. EVALUATION – CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH
When doing my contextual research there was some good and bad things that happened when writing it
up. This is because we had to do three people that were well known and in an area that would be linked to
what we would use in our project. So, for this I did Paula Scher, Yianni and David Noton. This is because
they were all in areas that would be part of my fanzine, these were photography, graphics and car wrap.
The good thing about the contextual research is that once I knew the background of each person, I knew
how to talk about it because they linked pretty well with my project. There was also a structure I followed
when talking about them and this was start with when they was born, then their education and then to
how they got to where they are today. I did this structure because it made it easy to follow through for
each person and it made writing up the information easier.
However I found doing my contextual research quite difficult to do as I wanted to get a merit at the end of
this project and so I had to try keep the amount of work I did consistent and do my best to cover
everything for the contextual research. But I found it difficult because at the start I didn’t feel like the
information I did was enough for a merit, so I sent my work off to get some feedback because I felt like it
needed some more improvements but I couldn’t at the time figure out what it was and when being at
home I was a little distracted too.
4. EVALUATION – CONTEXTUAL RESEARCH
I also found it quite difficult to get any background research on Yianni because on each website, articles etc
they all had the same information so I couldn’t really expand on his background and talk about it in more
detail.
But after collecting the information I needed I sent my work to my tutor to get some feedback so that I
could improve it more because I wanted to get a merit by the end of the project, so after receiving the
feedback I tried to improve it the best I can, and I sent it off again for another look through. This is to see if
I could improve it a little more or if it covered everything, I needed for the grade I was aiming for.
After a couple of days of waiting for more feedback, my tutor came back to me and said that everything
looked fine, and it was better than my first attempt of my contextual research. After seeing this I went
through my contextual research and overall, I could see it was much better and I felt like it didn’t need
improving just a little bit more.
5. EVALUATION - RESEARCH
When doing my research powerpoint I followed a structure throughout the powerpoint. For the first part I
did topic and market research and then for the second part I did audience and production research. The
good thing about the first part of the research was that I knew exactly what I needed to research and I was
able to find the stuff out quicker than my contextual research. This is because I was very interested in what
I was researching because its in an area that I am passionate about.
However the things that didn’t go so well with this first part of research was that, I struggled with time at
certain points in my reasecrh because the connection would cut in and out and so when things were
loading such as the interenet it took quite a bit of time to load. So to make sure I stayed on track with the
first part of my research, I did some work through my spare time and stayed up until late at night to make
sure I got things done on time. This is because I didn’t want to rush any of my work throughout this project
and I wanted it to be consistent throughout the project.
After doing the first part of my research I sent if off for feedback to see if I could improve it a little more
and while I was waiting for that feedback, I started on the second part of my research. For this I did
audience and production research.
6. EVALUATION - RESEARCH
When doing my audience research I started a little bit of it on the first week of my research. This is because I
wanted to get as many responses from two of my surveys, one that I put on a car forum and the other that I sent
to family, friends and people from my class. This is so I had a range of ages and could make a project that was
suitable for them all and see how they all see cars differently. But the good thing about my audience research is
that I was able to get the answers I needed in time and I was able to talk about them and how I would include
certain things in my project to try include things that my audience wanted. I was able to follow a structure when
writing up my research, so this helped me organise and explain my answers a bit more.
After my audience researched I moved onto my production research and for this I talked about what software I
planned to use and how I am limited due to the covid-19 crisis. I thought that this part went well as I was
prepared at the start of this project on what potential software's I would use in case we didn’t come back to
college in time. However I was able to use the softwares I wanted and needed in the end. But when talking about
my production research it went well because I knew which softwares I was going to use and why I would use each
of them. However the thing that didn’t g so well when doing this part of my research is that as much as I knew
what to write it didn’t look and wasn't enough to reach the grade I wanted, so to help me with this I sent of my
work and waited for some feedback from my tutor. After receiving feedback I was able to improve it a little more
but I still felt like it could be improved a little more so I showed the work to my mum and she was also to give me
a little more feedback so I could improve it. After improving it a third time I sent off my work to my tutor and
they were happy with my research.
7. EVALUATION - PLANNING
When doing my planning I split it into two one being my problem solving powerpoint and the other being
my initial plans. When doing my problem solving there were some good things about it which was, that
there was a structure when writing up my problem solving and I was able to mention all the potential
problems that could happen thoughout this project and how I would prevent the problems from
happening or an alternative if I couldn’t stop the problem. However the bad thing about this was that I felt
like I was repeating myself and wasn’t writing enough, so I couldn’t expand on what I already said about
potential problems .
This is when I asked for feedback so I could expand on it more to reach the grade I wanted to get into
university. While waiting for the feedback I moved onto doing my experiments, the things that went well
with my experiments is that I was able to create them very quickly using the free software krita compared
to photoshop which I would normally use for my experiments. The only downside when doing my
experiments Is that I didn’t know the software well as it was the first time i used it so I was a little slow
getting use to it but when doing my experiments it was quick and easy to use.
8. EVALUATION - PLANNING
When creating my flat plan I found that it helped me with my style sheets a lot more because I could imagine
what my fanzine would look like and the potential colours I would use. The good thing about the flat plan was
that it was quick and easy to create but the only issue is it did take a while to create as I was struggling on how to
layout the information and images throughout the fanzine. So I did fall a little behind on time but I was able to
catch back up by doing some work in my free time. After creating my flat plan I did my style sheets and
moodboards which didn’t take too long to do as they were very straightforward to talk about and analyse. The
only downside to doing these was that it was difficult to not repeat myself too much, so when I felt like I was
going to repeat myself I did take a break from it and then try and write about it. This did cost a little bit of time
but it was worth it in the end.
After doing all the moodboards and analysing them I then created a mindmap on mindmup. This website was
very useful to say it was the first time using it to create a mindmap, it helped make the mindmap look organised
and it made it easy to analyse each section of the mindmap, but there wasn’t really any downside when doing my
mindmap as it was quick and easy to do. After doing my mindmap I moved onto contingency planning and health
and safety. For this is talked about potential problems and solutions to help prevent the problems. This was also
quick and easy to do the only downside was I did struggle to think about potential problems as my mind did just
go blank t times so I did have to have a little break from it and start again. I then completed my planning
powerpoint and sent it off for feedback so I could possibly make some improvements, but my tutor said it was
good enough as it was and didn’t really need any improvements so that gave me some extra time to put towards
production/
9. EVALUATION – PRODUCTION
The first fanzine I ever did for college was the reason I chose to do a fanzine for my FMP. This is because it
was a fun thing to create that was based around a topic and area I am passionate about and want to do as
a career in the future.
When doing my production there was a lot of ups and downs throughout the process, the good thing
about the production was that I was able to finish it all on time so that I could start my evaluation on time.
I was also happy with how the final product came out and how you can see the improvements from the
beginning of production to now. The only downside when doing production was that there was quite a few
internet problems and then some problems with photoshop, this did take some useful time away that I
could have used to spend more time on improvements. But I was able to finish production on time.
I was also able to see how I have improved over the year from looking at my first fanzine to this fanzine I
did for my FMP. But overall I am happy with how my FMP and production turned out because I thought
that I would have had another improvement for time management but looking at the full process of this
project I can see I have improved on my time management and I have been able to complete each task on
time so far.
10. EVALUATION - VLOGS
When doing the vlogs there was some good and bad points about them. The good things was that they
were an easier way to explain the process of the full project from start to finish but the bad thing was that
they took quite a bit of time to do as you had to do get screenshots of each process and then you had to
record some audio and that took about 5 attemts to do because of the background noise. I also did feel like
some of the time I was reapeating what I was saying so I did have to delete some vlogs and redo them so
they sounded better and explained the process in a different way. This is because I want to be able to get a
merit at the end of this project and to do that I need to be able to explain the process in a way for people
to understand without repeating myself.
11. EVALUATION – REFLECTIVE DIARY
When doing my reflective dairy they were quite straight forward to do however they did take a bit of time
to do and I did have to do them in my free time just to catch up on them as you had to do one every week
from the start of the project to the very end. So I tried to do these while I was waiting for feedback or on a
weekend when I had free time. But when things were opening up again I did start to struggle with finding
free time as I did start to go back to work. But luckily I was able to do all my forms on time and that was a
huge relief because I thought I would be rushing them but luckily it all went the way I wanted it to go.
So all I really have to do now is check over everything and make sure it includes everything I want it to
include because I am trying to aim for a merit, this is so that I can get into university but also see how I’ve
improved and put all the skills I’ve learnt in this course into the course I plan to do at university but also
use the skills in my free time and see if I can get better than what I am now.
12. EVALUATION – TIME MANAGEMENT
Throughout the project I think I have managed my time very well compared to previous projects. At times I
thought I was falling behind and weould have to end up rushiong things within my project but luckily I got
back on track with everything and I was able to complete each task on its set deadline. This shows me that
over the past two years of doing this course I have finally been able to achieve my target which was time
management as I did struggle in past projects with this. So I am very glad I was able to complete each task
of the project on time. This did mean I had to use some of my spare time to make sure the tasks were
completed on time.
But I can see from this project my time management has improved and I plan to keep improving it for
future projects soon to come. This is because the area I want to work in as a career, time management is a
vital part as projects would have to be completed in a short amount of time.
13. EVALUATION – TECHNICAL QUALITIES
When thinking about my project there are some similarities
and differences. The similarities is that the fanzine looks like a
fanzine and has the bold basic font as the title. Looking at my
first fanzine I made compared to my FMP fanzine I made. I've
noticed my fanzine is more of a dark and bright theme
compared to most fanzines which just use a lot of
bright colours.
However, the similarities between the two fanzines is that it's
just a basic image on the front cover and some text explaining
what the fanzine is. Whereas my FMP front cover has a bit
more on the cover to help attract my target audience and get
them curious before they read the fanzine
14. EVALUATION – AESTHETIC QUALITIES
Overall I think in a way my fanzine is quite creative as it uses
a variety of colours and its unique. It also
shows car modifications such as wrap in a way that I see
them however I had to be in the mindset of my target
audience to help make this fanzine appealing and
interesting for them. I do think looking at the previous
fanzine that I created before, this current fanzine I did for
my FMP catches my attention more this is because it has a
good range of colours that all work well and the styles of
fonts match the style of the fanzine as a whole. But overall I
am happy with the outcome of my fanzine and how the
colours work well with each other.
15. EVALUATION – AUDIENCE APPEAL
When looking at my project I think to some extent it appeals to the target audience because of the type of
fanzine it is. I think because it's based-on cars and the instructions behind car wrap, I think it would spark
some interest and draw my target audience in. But also, I think the range of colours would draw
my audience in because it's not just dark or bright colours it’s a bit of both throughout the fanzine and
because the fanzine is about car wrap I thik the colours match with what the fanzines about.
I used this style to attract this audience as I wanted to create something pleasing to the eye and to get
their attention to read this fanzine but to also keep them interested throughout the fanzine and the only
way to do this was to be in their mindset throughout the process of creating the fanzine. This is because if I
wasn’t in their mindset, I could have possibly created something that doesn’t keep them interested and
this would have affected the project in a different way.
So when I felt like I couldn’t keep the audience interested I did ask for feedback on each page so I could
improve them to make them better than what they were and looking at the result now I am happy with
how the fanzine turned out and I think it looks much better than the first fanzine I created for a previous
project.
16. FEEDBACK 1 - JESSIE
What went well?
Your colouring and style of the overall magazine is good it's well composited and makes the entire fanzine
pop. I like how the pages are set up as its well shown and almost everything is clear, the photos and
information are readable to an extent.
What didn't go so well and possible improvements?
On page 1 and 15 you need to know how your patterns and words that have gradients or a style to them
are crossing over because you can't notice them and can spend some time trying to read what it says. My
advice would be either have some of those certain words in a box so that people can notice this
information. Also, on the topic of text on your pages you need to bold the small writing as if you want
them to notice the writing and not just skim through you will have to make it bold so its noticeable against
the background pattern
17. FEEDBACK 2 - FAITH
What went well?
I really liked the layout and use of different colors on every page as well as the mixture of light and dark
colours on each page. This made the magazine a lot more lively and eye catching. Furthermore, the
different fonts used throughout the magazine compliment each other really nicely.
What didn't go so well and possible improvements?
On page 15, a lot of different colours and fonts were used all at once which in my opinion made the page
look a bit overwhelming. Instead of using 6 different colours and 4-5 different fonts, I would advise you to
work with around 3 colours and 3-4 fonts. Also, on that same page, you could make the website
colour brighter(Lighter blue) as dark blue on dark purple makes it hard to read. But overall it's a good
piece of work.
18. FEEDBACK 3 - KERRI
What went well?
I really liked the content that took you through the step-by-step application process on wrap and decals.
Giving prices was really helpful; it gave me a clear idea of costs and if I was someone who needed to save
up then you know how much you need to aim for.
Contact details, social media and website details were very clear.
What didn't go so well and possible improvements?
It would have been good to get more of an understanding of their background experience. If I was to get
things done to my car, I would want to feel confident that they would know what they are doing.
