City of Things Smart Flanders
Worldwide – and especially in Flanders, Belgium – we employ close to 3.500 highly skilled researchers from over 70 nationalities who deliver industry relevant and life enhancing solutions.
offices spread across the world.
Together we can combine the benefits of the top-down and bottom-up approach to smart cities. Prof. Pieter Ballon is a research director at IMEC and thought leader on smart cities - published a book this year with some key recommendations to make smart cities a success. His first conclusion is that neither bottom-up or top-down approach works
The purely top-down approach optimizes efficiency but lacks citizen engagement and includes some major issues with transparency and privacy. The bottom-up approach on the other hand starts from citizen engagement and grass-root innovation but has big issues with sustainability in terms of policy issues and business impact.
So it is key to combine both! Again, the partnership with the city of Antwerp is very valuable in that together we combine the bottom-up and top-down approach, where both partners can easily link to government, industry, academic research and citizen – a full quadruple helix approach.
At the hardware and connectivity layer we are deploying any differet types of sensors and wireless technologies with a city-wide coverage. You can get full access to the wireless hardware, allowing for large-scale & real-life testing & experiemnets on sesnor and wireless technologies.
You can use this to validate your own technology or test and validate diferent types of optiosn for your specific solution.
