Tsunamis & Waves

  1. - Khin Thu Thu Han ( 22BSIT002 ) Foundation course on Math & Physics BSIT (div 1) [ CMPICA ] 22 . 3 . 23
  2. • What is Tsunami ? • Formation of Tsunami • Physics behind them • Characteristics & Examples • Detection • Prevention • References
  3. • Its a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a larger volume of a body of water, usually an ocean • Japanese --> tsu ( harbour ) ... nami ( waves ) • Wave lengths can be 100-1000km apart • Waves can approach shore in 5 minutes intervals • Time between each wave is 5-60 minutes
  4. • Volcanic Eruption • Earthquake • Meteorite impacts • Underwater explosion
  5. g = acceleration due to gravity ( 9.8m/s2) c = shallow - water wave at a speed ( depend upon the water depth ) h = depth of water 𝑐 = 𝑔ℎ
  6. In a deep ocean, the typical water depth is around 4000m so .... 𝑐 = 𝑔ℎ = 4000 ∗ 9.8 = 200 m/𝑠2 so tsunami will travel around 200 m/s2 or more than 700 km / h
  7. wave height : The amount by which the sea-floor displaced. wavelength and period : size and shape of underwater disturbance FOR TSUNAMI THAT ARE GENERATED BY UNDERWATER EARTHQUAKES
