ANNUAL REPORT 2014
We are building the biggest community for nonprofit
organizations interested in technology ā 1,377 Romanian
NGOs are now registered with TechSoup Romania, 377 of
which joined in 2014 alone.
Bitdefender, the world`s leader in antivirus solutions,
became the first Romanian global IT donor in the TechSoup
Global Network. We are extremely proud that they now
protect nonprofit organizations worldwide.
We are also celebrating a new milestone in our mission:
in the last 5 years, together with our partners Adobe,
Bitdefender, CISCO, Microsoft, and Symantec, we have
managed to save the Romanian nonprofit sector more
than $3,000,000 USD when accessing licensed software
products.
With Office 365 for NGOs, we have started a new path
in our journey, helping NGOs take their programs to the
cloud and become more efficient and prepared for their
beneficiaries. By the end of 2014, more than 3,500 NGO
2014 WAS AN AMAZING YEAR
FOR ASOCIAČIA TECHSOUP
AND OUR COMMUNITY OF NGOs
employees and volunteers are now using Office 365.
In 2014, Symantec joined the companies who are
helping Romanian nonprofits protect their data.
Throughout the year, we have supported Google
Romaniaās efforts to promote Google AdGrants, an amazing
opportunity for NGOs to advertise their cause for free.
2014 was our most active year yet, with an average of
3 public event per month. The learning resources that we
have created for our community of nonprofit organizations
have reached more than 800 NGOs employees and
volunteers. We are grateful to all the trainers who have
dedicated their time and professional expertise to help
Romanian NGOs discover how to use technology to
promote their causes online. Our newest partner, ING
Bank, and their volunteers have helped us create the
first financial education learning program aimed at NGO
employees and volunteers.
Our commitment to promote technology as a tool
for social change went even further in 2014; partnering
with Microsoft Romania, we have started to promote
computer science skills and careers in Information
and Communication Technology (ICT) to high-school
students in 15 counties in Romania, working with
more than 2,100 students in 2014 alone. The program,
Opening Opportunities, won the 2nd prize in the Social
Responsibility category of the Civil Society Gala in June
2014. This is the first time that an IT company was
rewarded for its social involvement in this competition.
We could not have come this far without the trust
and on-going support of our amazing software donation
partners, our long-time partners and financial sponsors,
our NGO community, and the dedication of our new Board
and Executive Team ā all of them more committed than
ever to create a world where every Romanian NGO has the
technology it needs to reach its full potential.

We are committed to serving our NGO community and promoting technology
to young new audiences in our 4 strategic programs.
We strongly believe that technology helps NGOs to become more effective
in fulfilling their mission. We are proud to serve 1,377 nonprofit organizations
as part of TechSoup community, with a presence in every county in Romania.
We have helped Romanian nonprofit organizations save up $3,008,999 USD in
software acquisition costs.
155 software products from Adobe, Bitdefender, CISCO, Microsoft, and
Symantec are available for eligible NGOs on www.techsoup.ro
In 2014 alone, we have trained 810 NGO employees and volunteers in digital
skills like using SEO to AdWords, Office 365, use of CRM solutions, cyber security,
stock photography, unconventional advertising and digital storytelling to
promote their respective organizational missions.
We are grateful to the companies, NGOs and people who donated their
time and knowledge to teach NGO employees and volunteers: Microsoft,
Bitdefender, ING Bank, Zitec, Dreamstime, 2Parale, Creionetica, Good Afternoon,
Simplon and Association for Community Relations.
Together with ING Bank Romania volunteers, we have created a training
program that has helped more than 300 NGO employees and volunteers. This
program promoted basic skills such as budget planning and financial reporting,
better understanding of banking services and systems, use of info graphics to
illustrate their work, and how to source funding opportunities through various
tools.
The project is funded by ING Bank in Romania and implemented by ING
volunteers.
Opening Opportunities is a national mentoring program for high school
students with a focus on computer science and technological entrepreneurship
skills, powered by Microsoft YouthSpark.
In collaboration with 40 Microsoft employees who went through our
mentoring and training program, we successfully reached 1,560 high school
students through our events and activities. Bucharest and 10 other cities were
part of the first pilot phase of the program. Together with our partner Zitec, we
have developed the most advanced online mentorship platform available in
Romania: www.openingopportunities.ro
The project continues in 2015 in more than 15 counties involved and 70
Microsoft mentors.

Adobeās award-winning technologies have
revolutionized how the world engages with ideas and
information. The Adobe donation program at TechSoup
provides a range of creative software products to
eligible non-profits and charities throughout Romania.
Adobe products continue to be one of the most
in-demand solutions available through TechSoupās
donation program.
Microsoft has been a longstanding and steadfast
partner of TechSoup Global and the nonprofit sector.
In Romania, they have been our partners since 2009.
From operating systems to office productivity suites
to collaboration tools, Microsoft has made over 250
products available for donation through TechSoup
Global.
As the cloud revolutionizes the way
businesses operate, TechSoup Global,
TechSoup Romania, and Microsoft are
partnering to ensure that NGOs globally
share in the benefits.
Office 365 for Nonprofits breaks down
geographic boundaries and enables
NGOs worldwide to work how and
where they need to, allowing them to
focus on what matters ā helping more
people and affecting greater change.
Fully donated and discounted plans are
available for eligible NGOs, requested
directly from Microsoft at www.
microsoft.com/office365nonprofits
In Romania, 3,598 people working and
volunteering in nonprofits use Office 365
and work easily on the cloud.
CISCO is one of the first donors in Romania. Corporate
responsibility is central to Cisco Systemsā culture and
history. Cisco has now made 45 products available
through TechSoup Romaniaās product donation
catalogue to enable non-profits to better serve their
communities.

Thanks to the Cisco hardware donations
the organization acquired through
TechSoup Romania, SOS Childrenās
Villages were able to build an intranet
network to connect all villages. Each
child can now play computer games,
navigate on the Internet, and access
personal documents from anywhere.
Moreover, because of the SMARTnet
licenses included in the Cisco donations,
the organization can rely on a virtual
private network with gateway security.
Itās easier now to edit materials and to test
new ideas. Definitely, Greenpeace managed
to save on production costs, and this is very
important for us, taking into consideration
that our entire activity is made possible by
individual donations.ā
We are always on the move, so we need technology in order to
centralize information and efficiently communicate with our team
members. Microsoft Office 365 helps a lot. We can send attachments
up to 25 MB, and this is hugely useful, especially when you need to scan
birth certificates for the 2.200 children in the program.ā
TechSoup is one of our key partners in
empowering NGOs across Romania, to
do more and achieve more. Technology
is the key to working better, smarter
and more efficient and we, at Microsoft,
we believe NGOs should benefit from
our latest technology in order to have
an even greater impact in the local
communities. We have numerous
examples of the great work NGOs do in
Romania and we believe solutions like
Office 365 can truly make a difference in
the lives of NGO workers. Through our
partnership with TechSoup, we are able
to support a wide range of nonprofit
organizations with the technology,
information and training that matters
in making their work meaningful and
empowering the people around them,ā
With SMARTnet licenses for Cisco routers,
we are always guaranteed to have the latest
software version for Cisco routers and to
replace them if needed.ā

Technology is perfect when you do not feel it. [ā¦] We use Bitdefender

online communication.ā
The security of our organization is extremely important, not because we
have secrets to hide, but because it is essential to protect our data and
not lose years of priceless work.ā
We are very happy to have been able to acquire Bitdefender security
solutions for PATRIR, as indeed this has saved us financial resources.ā
With the help of Bitdefender we no longer lose important time and
documents. Many times before I have lost all the data from a computer,
and that is why it is important to be protected against viruses.ā

ANNUAL REPORT 2014
Technology helps you be more efficient and save resources where you
need the most: time, funds, human resources. In our view, it is vital for
NGOs to explore technology, to benefit from all its advantages and to
integrate it in your activities, to be more efficient and have a greater
impact for your beneficiaries.ā
There is no doubt that using an antivirus is essential for cutting costs
and better manage the working time. It helped us to save money and
redirect the savings for our programs of social and economic inclusion
for people with disabilities.ā
The technology plays two important roles in our organization. First of
all, it makes our work and communication easier. Secondly, it enables
the children to access the same technology the majority of us already
have access to.ā
Similar to a startup, our costs are important, so it was extremely useful
to lower them so much by accessing TechSoup donations.ā
The technology is very important for linking the Association with the
volunteers.ā
Office 365 helped us to communicate more efficiently and enable us
to send information outside the organization in a friendlier format.
Windows 8 and Microsoft Office helped us in our research and website
building.ā
We consider that the TechSoup donation contributed directly to our
organizationās capacity-building and implicitly to strengthen our teamās
capacity to take actions. So, we thank you for this.ā
Because we could access affordable software, we are more flexible and
independent in our daily work life. We have also cut costs on IT support.ā
The TechSoup program for nonprofit organizations was an opportunity
for our team because we could access affordable Microsoft products.
The money saved allowed us to focus more on the quality of our
workshops and to support the craftsmen who are involved in the
professional development of youngsters.ā

We have trained 810 NGO employees and volunteers in everything from
SEO to AdWords, Office 365, the use of CRM solutions, cyber security, stock

We are grateful to the companies, NGOs and experts who donated their
time and knowledge to teach NGO employees and volunteers: Microsoft,
Bitdefender, ING Bank, Zitec, Dreamstime, 2Parale, Creionetica, Good Afternoon,
Simplon and Association for Community Relations.
For some of the NGOs we serve, our webinars are the only online learning
resources that they can access for free.
I do believe that in order to achieve greater and greater things, you have
to give something back. That is why, together with my colleagues at
Good Afternoon, each year, we give time to help and support NGOs and
Start-ups that get our attention. I have found in TechSoup an honest
partner which provides resources and projects that bring joy to my
activist soul.ā
From the moment we have discovered you, everything TechSoup
Romania means was a very nice surprise. On webinars, whether we talk

In April 2014, we hosted a full day event for NGO
activists to demonstrate new ways Office 365
technology solutions can help nonprofits meet
their objectives in the civil society.
Together with Creionetica, a multimedia agency dedicated to social causes,
we have organized a workshop for NGOs on creativity and alternative
communication strategies at NGO Fest. The workshop was followed by an
online training course on reiterating these topics.
We were invited by the Share Federation in Cluj-
Napoca to host a full day workshop on Office
365 for NGOs.
We, and TechSoup Romania, have in common the constant support
that we offer Civil Society. It was a unique experience because many
nonprofit organizations joined our events and started experimenting
unconventional ways for promoting their projects. We felt extraordinary
and useful.ā
OFFLINE TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS
Being able to collaborate with the TechSoup team was a huge learning
experience, as we have a partnership to help NGOs to access the right
technology. In this new world of unlimited computing power, where
we generate lots of information, we were able to deliver tools and
productivity platforms to organizations with the help of TechSoup.

of Bucharest. Currently she is completing a MA in Sociology of Consumption
and Marketing at the same university.
Elena has worked in the Romanian nonprofit sector for 12 years now. Her
professional experience ranges from nonprofit project management to media
expert in special editorial projects with mainstream and niche media, focusing
now on projects that help NGOs and youth to master technology and use it
to fulfill their potential. Always a first grade teacher at heart, she has helped
build youth projects that empower young people to get ready for real life
career choices: from innovative hands-on internships with journalism and
communication students, to programs that prepare students for tech related
careers. Elena has a BA in Political Science from National School of Political
and Administrative Studies, a MA in Ethics at the Philosophy Faculty of the
University of Bucharest, and a natural geeky curiosity.
Alexandra currently oversees the software donation program and the NGO
community. She guides and helps every nonprofit organization joining the
TechSoup community to access software donations. She previously worked
as a fundraiser and fueled two of her biggest passions: fundraising strategies
and accessible public funds for nonprofits. Alexandra holds a BA in Public
Administration ā European Administration and a MA in Public Policies and
European Studies, both from the National School of Political and Administrative
Studies (SNSPA, Bucharest, Romania).
