Observing Juneteenth and Pride Juneteenth commemorates the date in which enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were formally notified of the end of the slavery - June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The observance recognizes Black liberation, celebrates freedom, and calls attention to current issues faced by the Black/ African-American community. The observance became a federal holiday in the United States in 2021. Illustration by Ebin Lee

Observing Pride and Juneteenth June 28, 1970 is generally considered the date of the first Gay Rights march in New York, Christopher Street Liberation Day. These marches were a direct response to riots in LGBTQ+ spaces, most famously, the Stonewall riot in New York in 1969. Today there are hundreds of LGBTQ+ Pride celebrations around the world, many of which are held in June.

The Center quickly became the focal point for the community and subsequently moved to two larger locations over the years. In October 2005, thanks to the success of the Pyramid Project capital campaign, OkEq purchased an 18,000-square-foot facility to house the permanent home for the community. The Dennis R. Neill Equality Center opened on Jan. 23, 2007. ● OKEQ Health Clinic, Trans Support Group, Legal Services, Equality Business Alliance, Art Gallery, Library, Computer Lab, Youth Program, Behavioral Health Services, Shelter, History Project Room, Event Space, Lynn Riggs Theater, and more.
