GIS for Utilities
A map was once a simple piece of paper.
Its information was limited by time and
scale. With the proliferation of various
technologies that we live with today, things
have changed. A map is now a living
document. And as the world changes, your
maps adapt. Global trends like
smartphones, context- and location-based
search, climate change, and such
advancements have brought GIS to the
cross-roads of various technology lanes.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg.
Experts say that 70-80 per cent of all
forms of data/information in this world
possess some geographical reference and
GIS becomes immediately relevant here.
Matured IT standards have expanded the
scope of GIS across many applications.
The global GIS engineering applications
market will see double digit growth till
2016, as per the Geospatial Today
magazine. Our GIS practice combines the
power of GIS technology with extensive
domain knowledge to develop powerful
spatial technology solutions. At our GIS
group, we are constantly striving to
provide innovative solutions that solve your
problems by leveraging our multiple years
of GIS, IT and vertical play. Be it the
operational improvement of public utilities,
network planning, logistics optimization or
vehicle telematics applications, we pride
ourselves on having worked with some of
the world's best organizations and
governments. For example, the world's
second biggest Municipal Corporation and
India's largest corporate group have been
our clients.

3. Case Studies
Case Study 1: PUB, Singapore
Brief: Real time data integration with GIS
PUB is Singapore's national water agency. PUB is responsible for the collection, production,
distribution and reclamation of water in Singapore. PUB collects rainwater from canals,
rivers and streams in 17 reservoirs across the country. All reservoirs are linked to enable
pumping water from one reservoir to another. The water is then piped to waterworks for
treatment before being distributed to citizens around the country. Used water is then
collected through an extensive sewerage system and treated at water reclamation plants.
PUB required the ability to monitor water levels in real time. They also required a web
application that citizens could use to monitor water levels.
We designed and implemented a comprehensive GIS based solution for PUB:
• Developed a GIS based dashboard using ESRI ArcGIS
• Integrated real time data captured from water level sensors throughout the country
• Integrated with OneMap GIS platform for base map visualization instead of Google Maps
• Integrated the GIS system to a messaging system for generating alerts
• The application included an archive feature where citizens could see
a history of recorded events
We used the following tools for the project:
• OneMap GIS platform
• ArcGIS
Integrated camera feed
to the application
Real time data availability
to both officials and
citizens
Automatic alert
generation when water
reaches threshold levels
Reduced time to take
effective decisions during
flash floods

Case Study 2: San Diego Water Department, USA
Brief: SPLASH upgrade
The San Diego Water Department serves more than 1.3 million people over more than
200 square miles of developed land. In addition to three water treatment plants, San Diego
maintains and operates more than 3,302 miles of water lines, 49 water pump plants, 90+
pressure zones, and more than 200 million gallons of potable water storage capacity in 32
standpipes, elevated tanks and reservoirs.
GE had deployed SPLASH, a Smallworld GIS based application, at the San Diego Water
Department, USA. The primary requirements for GE from us were:
• Study and understand SPLASH 4.0 and SPLASH 4.1
• Test the application
• Configure the application
• Prepare user manuals
Our consultant worked with a GE consultant at the client location to test the application.
Following three rounds of testing, the service was extended by another four weeks, over
the initial three weeks. During the testing, we identified 86 defects, including several core
defects. All defects were logged and they assisted developers in identifying and resolving
problems in the application, ensuring that the final delivery was bug free. We also prepared
30 user manuals that were delivered to the customer on time.
We used the following tools:
• Smallworld 4.0 and 4.1
• VSS

4. Case Study 3: Indraprastha Gas
Brief: Smallworld implementation
Indraprastha Gas was set up in 1998 to manage the Delhi City Gas Distribution Project.
Initially, the company was formed to lay the network for the distribution of natural gas in
the National Capital Territory of New Delhi to consumers in the domestic, transport and
commercial sectors. The company primarily caters to the transport sector that uses
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), the domestic and commercial sectors that use Piped
Natural Gas (PNG) and the industrial sector that uses R-LNG. Indraprastha Gas required a
GIS based asset and network management solution that was capable of delivering multiple
benefits.
The primary requirements for the customer were that the GIS solution must:
• Help manage assets effectively
• Optimize network design
• Strengthen marketing efforts
• Improve customer service
• Build new efficiencies into the workflow
Our team implemented a client-server and Internet based GIS solution for the customer.
The solution features a flezxible and scalable open architecture. We created the data
model for the solution and captured and migrated the land base and gas network data into
Smallworld. Additionally, the solution was integrated with SynerGEE Gas for network
analysis, which allowed data queries from the Internet to prepare charts, graphs and
SynerGEE interexchange. Several existing AutoCAD files were also migrated to Smallworld
as part of the implementation.
We used the following tools:
• Smallworld
• SynerGEE Gas
• SIAS
• Magik
