2. ASA Codes
Number Name Brief Description
1 Compliance You must stay within the law, don’t lie and mislead people and
don’t have anything considered indecent in your advert.
2 Recognition of
marketing
communications
It needs to include the slogan, logo and colour schemes for the
brand.
It also needs to look like an advert and be clear that you are
advertising a product.
3 Misleading Adverts You cannot lie about your product and mislead people in anyway,
so any facts about the price or functions of the product must be
truthful.
4 Harm and Offence You need to be mindful of different social groups and people and
not create content that would intentionally cause offence or harm.
5 Children You cannot create advertising which would pressure a child to buy
it or be unsuitable for a child to view.
You cannot directly advertise to a child.
6 Privacy You must not use pictures or portray a person or something that is
well known, without first gaining written permission.
13 Food, food supplements
and associated health or
nutritional claims
You cannot portray your product as being healthy, without proof, or
advertise it in a way that would cause poor dietary habits.
4. Mind Map
• Strengths of using this method
- Using the mind map method allows you to write down ideas and to keep track of
them.
- You can use lines and arrows to link ideas together and even create different
coloured shapes with a key to help organise your ideas.
- Creating a mind map will save time when it comes to creating the advert as you’ve
already planned your ideas and can use it to refer to.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ The mind map can be very time consuming to set up as it’s a little bit fiddly moving
the bubbles around so that they don’t clash or overlap with other boxes.
‐ It can look very busy if you have too many ideas and it can be hard to tell which
boxes are linked by the arrows.
‐ If you have a lot of ideas, the boxes and text have to be made smaller, in order to
fit everything on.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
This was the first time I’ve created a mind map and I found that
it helped me think of more ideas and see the links between them. I did find it a
little time consuming, but once it was complete, I found that it was very useful to
refer back to.
5. Coca-Cola are big on seasonal
holidays, for example, the
Christmas holiday.
I think this could also be
applied to the summer holidays
and Halloween to promote the
brand at this that of year.I’ve chosen pictures of the
varieties of Coca-Cola
products available which
could be used as a side note
on an advert to show other
the varieties Coca-Cola have
on offer.
Mood Board
The can and bottle represent
the old and newer style of
packaging available.
6. Mood Board
• Strengths of using this method
‐ Creating a mood board helps you to visualise the style of the poster and plan your ideas
in a creative way.
‐ It saves you time when creating the advert as you can refer back to your ideas and gain
inspiration.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ Creating a mood board requires you to search for content which can be quite time
consuming.
‐ You are limited as to what pictures you can find and may not be able to locate a picture
that you like or will actually use.
‐ If you have more than one theme idea, you would probably need to create more than
one mood board, otherwise you are limited for space.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, I found that creating the mood board for the Coca-Cola print advert was very
helpful. It helped me visualise my ideas and gain inspiration and I’m sure it will help me
if I need to refer back to my ideas.
7. Style Sheet
Fonts
Colours
The fonts on the left would be
good for use on a summer
advert as they are fun styled
fonts, whereas the fonts on
the right would be best used
for a Halloween promotion.
I also added the Loki Cola font
as it is the font used by Coca-
Cola.
The top row of colours on the left are the
traditional colours used by the Coca-Cola
brand. The bottom row are colours that
are bright and vibrant and would work
well in a summer theme.
The colours on the right are deeper and
often associated with Halloween and
would also work well with the traditional
colours.
8. Style Sheet
• Strengths of using this method
‐ The style sheet is good for planning the different fonts and colours that you might use when
creating your advert.
‐ It will also be useful to refer back to and keep track of the different fonts and colours that you have
chosen.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ It is time consuming to search for the fonts online and then you have to copy and paste images of
them into the style sheet.
‐ You are limited to the fonts that you can find by searching online, especially ones that are free to
use and don’t require a license or permission to use.
‐ Your ideas may change from what you originally planned out.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, I found creating the style sheet helpful, as it helped me visualise my ideas and keep track
of the styles I had chosen.
It also helped me see how the fonts and colours work together, although I did find I was
limited as to which fonts I could choose from as there are fonts available online that aren’t
free to use.
10. Layout Plan
• Strengths of using this method
‐ Using a layout plan will help you to visualise the layout of the project and get a
basic idea of what it will look like.
‐ It can help to see whether the pictures/fonts etc work well together and will help
save time when creating the real advert.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ It’s only a basic representation of the outcome you want to achieve and will differ
greatly to the finished project.
‐ You may not even use the pictures, fonts and colours in the final project and it can be
quite time consuming to locate them if you are using free ones from the internet.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, I found creating a layout plan for my Coca-Cola print advert was helpful, as I was
able to visualise possible placements of the logo, the main picture that I wanted to use,
and where the text would be best positioned.

12. Brainstorm
• Strengths of using this method
‐ Brainstorming is a great way to visualise and keep a track of your ideas and may
also help you to remember them.
‐ You can see clear links between your ideas and amend any that may clash or cause
a mixed message to the audience.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ The ideas are basic and you may stray away from those ideas, when creating the
final project.
‐ You might fixate on one particular aspect, which could lead you to tailor other
ideas around that particular idea.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, brainstorming my ideas helped me to plan out what needed to be included in
my radio jingle.
It helped me to see if my ideas would work well together and alter any that might
have strayed away from my overall theme and whether they worked with the
target audience.
13. Informal Pitch
• Strengths of using this method
‐ Presenting an informal pitch to the tutor is useful to get feedback on your ideas and if something doesn’t
quite work right or if you’re missing something, it can be identified in an earlier stage of planning.
‐ If you have overlooked something that may cause a copyright issue, it gives you chance to alter the idea
before you begin to produce the jingle, which will save you a lot of stress and time in the long run and save
you from any legal issues.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ You might find that they suggest ideas that will lead you away from your original idea, which could cause
you to have to restart or amend your original plan.
‐ It is an individuals feedback, rather than a collective view. So the feedback could be limited to that
person’s opinion and views of the work.
‐ The person may bring up copyright issues, which could cause issues when producing your idea, leading
you to have to alter or come up with an entirely new idea.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, I found the informal pitch very useful. It helped us to think further about what sounds we might use
and expand our range of sound effects, rather than having to alter them.
We also received feedback on our theme, which did cause us to alter our idea slightly, but because it was
noticed in an early stage of planning, it meant that we hadn’t spent time producing the jingle only to have
to alter it.
15. Group Idea Generation
• Strengths of using this method
‐ Brainstorming in a group or with another individual can be really helpful for coming up with
ideas because you can bounce ideas off each other.
‐ Another person may spot any flaws or spot an issue that you might not notice when
brainstorming by yourself.
‐ You each have you own skill set, for example whereby one person might be great at coming
up with a narrative and script, the other person might be better with thinking of sound
effects and music.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ You may find it difficult to get together with you group and if you have conflicting ideas, it
could make the process take longer.
‐ When creating a written brainstorm, you then have to scan it into the computer and email it
to the other members of the group, which is also time-consuming.
‐ When brainstorming in a group, you may find that you can’t agree on the idea if you have
specific individual visions and can’t find a way to merge them or come up with a joint idea.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Working in a group was really helpful; we both bounced ideas off each other and were able
to come up with an idea that suited both of us. We were lucky that our individual ideas were
similar so they merged well.
16. Formal Proposal
• Strengths of using this method
‐ A formal proposal is useful to make sure that you have thoroughly planned and thought
through your ideas for your radio advert, to ensure that it, not only, follows copyright
laws, but also that it’s not going to intentionally cause harm to a particular group or
individual.
‐ It finalises the planning stage and allows you to move onto producing the radio advert
in Premiere Pro.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ You may realise that you have overlooked something in your radio advert, like
whether your concept may cause offense to a particular social group or individual,
which would then mean that you have to either amend your idea or create a new
one.
‐ Your formal proposal could be rejected and you could be forced to amend your
idea or create a new one.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, I found it helpful as it made us think about our radio advert in more detail. We
were lucky that our idea was simple and not specific to any particular groups or
individuals that may cause offense.
17. Initial Reaction
• I have seen and played computer games through quite a long time frame, so I
am familiar with this type of game style, but creating a game is a whole new
concept to me.
• I found it difficult to draw my self portrait for the experiment as I haven’t
drawn a pixel image before. I am unsure how well I will do at creating the
scenes, props and character for the advergame.
• I found it tricky drawing in pixels. It requires a steady hand and I struggled to
get the image to look how I wanted, however, I did find it quite interesting to
draw in pixels.
• I haven’t created an animation before, so although it is new to me, I am quite
looking forward to creating one and learning how to do so.
18. Initial Reaction
• Strengths of using this method
‐ A strength of creating an initial reaction is that it will help you to identify where
your weaknesses might be.
‐ It will help you to reflect on where you could improve your skills so that you can
improve before creating your project.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ It is merely a reaction to creating a pixel game; it is not a plan.
‐ It is time consuming to create and it has a limited purpose.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I have a mixed reaction to creating the initial reaction. Although it is helpful to
identify where I may need to improve, it’s purpose is short-lived, so therefore, is it
really worth the time to create it?
20. Sketches
• Strengths of using this method
‐ Creating sketches gives you the chance to plan the characters, props and scenery that you may
want to include in your advergame.
‐ Using grid paper to draw images is very beneficial because it helps you to plan images that you may
find difficult to create.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ Your ideas may change when actually creating the images in Photoshop.
‐ The sketches are only basic representations of the final images that you will create.
‐ It’s time consuming and although you have something to refer to, you are going to have to draw
them again in Photoshop.
‐ When the sketches were scanned into a digital form, where I’d used a lighter shade, the picture was
too faint to see.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, I found it very helpful to sketch the images. I struggle with drawing, so planning it out on grid
paper helped me to clearly see the image forming as I was drawing it. I found it much easier than
drawing my pixel portrait for my experimentation.
In future though, it may be easier to use coloured pencils rather than shading the images.
21. Formal Proposal
• Strengths of using this method
‐ It will help you to clearly think about the concept of your advergame, ensuring that you
aren’t going to offend any particular social groups or individuals.
‐ By relating the ASA codes to your formal proposal, it will help you to ensure that you aren’t
portraying the product, advertised in the game, in a way that may mislead a consumer.
‐ Creating a formal proposal helps you to iron out any issues before creating the game.
• Weaknesses of using this method
‐ The formal proposal for your advergame may be rejected if you have overlooked any
copyright issues.
‐ If you are required to make any changes to your game, then you may have to come up with
new ideas for your game.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
Yes, I found it helpful to create a formal proposal as it made me look at my ideas in more
detail and ensure that they wouldn’t include content that would cause offense to any
particular social group or include anything that may cause copyright issues.
