Why do I like this genre of film?
The genre I have chosen to do is Action/Fantasy.
I like this genre of film because most of the films are based on comics. The
story lines always draw you in and have a good start, middle and end. The
actors they choose to star in this film fit in with the description of the character
which makes the film even better as they fit the character description and make
the film more real.
The special effects in these films are realistic and catch your eye. The editing
consists of quick cuts and wide shots (for the fighting scenes), they also use
establishing shots to show the location.
X-men Origins and Avengers are both Action/Super heroes film whereas Taken
is more Action.
Star Theory
The actor can sometimes be the reason you watch a film, as you’re a fan of the
actors work so if a films comes out with them in it you will go and see it. But it
can also be the reason you don’t watch a film because the actor in it is the
actor you don’t really like or there not the best of actors so it can put you off
wanting to see the movie.
For example I am a fan of Hugh Jackmans work because I like the way he
changes for certain roles and gets into character.
Reception Theory (Stuart Hall)
Reception theory is a theory Stuart Hall founded. It’s a theory that explains the
way you have been brought up and your political views and religious views are
the reason why you like certain genre’s of film/Actors. For example if you was
brought up in a family where they have strong political views the films you
would watch would have political views in them you wouldn’t think anything of
this because it would be a normal thing for you.
Why I like this genre?
I like this genre of film because it gets you away from reality and you go into
this whole new different world. When I was younger I read a lot of books that
were fantasy/mythical and this made me like this genre of film more as its
something I enjoy to read and watch. Marvel films are my favourite as they are
sometimes about someone who has two lives, one is their normal life the other
is saving people lives. Also their about people who are mutants and have
different abilities and I like these types of films. I also like Action films as I like
the suspense they build and the fight scenes in them, and sometimes they
have a good twist that makes the film even more enjoyable.
Media Literacy
I found out about these films by word of mouth, this can be from my
friends or my dad, the trailers before videos mainly on YouTube. If the
trailer looks good and catches my eye it makes me want to watch it
also if I like the actor/actress in the film it makes me want to see it
more. Also in the magazines I read it sometimes has a small section of
new films in it, this makes me want to watch the film because the
synopsis draws me in.
I also have been brought up on films like this because my dad is a huge
fan of Marvel films, so I’ve grew up watching them. This has had a
huge influence on me liking this genre of film.
