We are funded by NHS Lothian and City of
Edinburgh Council Health & Social Care.
We currently have 50 places available on a
self referral contractual basis of 3-5
days/week. Placements are not time limited.
3. Purpose
SAMH is dedicated to mental health and well-being for all.
Vision
Our vision is of a society where people are able to live their lives
fully regardless of present or past circumstances.
Values
Our values underpin everything we do. We believe that everyone
has the right to be treated with dignity, respect and equality. We
believe that everyone is entitled to hope and choice and to achieve
personal fulfilment.
4. Mission
SAMH will lead by example. SAMH will be innovative, purposeful
and challenging in all that it does. SAMH will campaign for rights
and rights-based services, challenge stigma and discrimination and
promote inclusion. SAMH will work to raise the aspirations and
expectations of people who use services, people who deliver
services and society as a whole.
SAMH will promote mental health and well-being within community

9. Well being
The focus of working organically is to create
the best conditions for good health. The
following are reflections of people at Redhall
on how working here has helped to meet their
needs.
11. Security - a safe
place to be and
unfold.
• Support that is challenging and constructive. The
opposite of neglect.
• People understand the experience of mental health
problems. No barriers
• People ‘see’ you and your potential in terms of what you
can do.
• When you feel despairing – people keep your dreams
safe and hold the hope for you.
• People choose who they talk to (no key workers) and
what they share. (Open access files, no medical
records.)
13. To give and
receive attention.
• Giving attention to others and taking
responsibility makes you feel worthwhile.
• Important to have two - way relationships.
• Interdependency – we all need support from
others.
• Learning to listen and take part e.g. site
meetings; learning social / life skills.
• Sense of perspective – getting the bigger
picture.
15. Feeling in control
of your life.
• No time limits and people self refer.
• Help to get control of basic things e.g. time keeping
can lead to gaining control of the more complex
things e.g relationships
• Understanding why you get upset and how your body
reacts to e.g. fear, anxiety, anger.
• Learning to fight for your recovery – not being
defined by your label.
• Mindfulness – Living in the present instead of regret
for the past or dread of the future.
17. Emotional
Connection,
friendship and
fun.
• Healing is impossible in loneliness – we make
friends best by doing things together.
• People care enough to notice when you are not there.
• Meaningful shared goals.
• Having real jobs to do builds friendship and team work.
• Humour and Playfulness – fun and laughter even in the
darkest days.
19. Achievement –
feeling competent.
• Learning to take risks and overcoming fear (e.g. taking
responsibility, attending site meetings, risking criticism)
• Even when despairing you get the chance to be
‘miserable and useful’
• Learning to be ‘good enough’ – surviving mistakes –
good learning.
• The garden gives visible results and lots of positive
feedback.
21. Social Status.
• Working in a new and exciting area of expertise
-gardening. Everyone wants to be here!
• Everyone's input is needed; labour, ideas, skills.
• Being trusted with real responsibility creating a sense
of worth and being valued.
• Campaigning positively against stigma –experts by
experience can change attitudes.
• Challenging preconceived beliefs – yours and others –
you can achieve more than you believe.
23. Meaning –
Being stretched
not stressed
• Working toward ambitious goals – a job or task
bigger than yourself.
• Support is based on reaching potential – not managing
symptoms.
• Contributing towards a shared goal e.g building a
centre of excellence.
• Pacing your progress.
• Helping to develop / deliver mental health training.
25. Feeling part of a
wider community.
•Open interaction with a wide variety of people.
• Appreciation of visitors – helps to dispel stigma and
grow confidence.
• Placements with other agencies when people are
ready.
• As peoples confidence grows they may feel able to
challenge negative reactions to having mental health
• problems.
Recognition from award bodies for team achievements.
26. Recovery
• “Recovery is a personal journey supported by others –
in a healing environment.”
• “Recovery involves challenge. It can even be a
challenge just to ask for help”
• “It’s a reason to get out of bed. It offers options
other than medication.”
• “What’s life without hope of recovery? It sucks! It’s
lonely, hopeless, despairing, suicidal, scary,
pointless.”
• “You feel like you are not a waste of space.you are
useful for something and have some importance –
27. Recovery
• “Recovery is a journey. A bad spell is not a ‘relapse’ but
a diversion; a pause to learn a lesson.”
• “Taking one step at a time. It’s about having a goal
and working towards it. It’s not just about you on your
own; other people influence your recovery.”
• “Being told you can recover encourages you, because you
have hope.”
• “There’s nothing like getting your overalls on. You
become someone with a mission. It gives you the
potential to realise your dreams.”
