4. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Siddhartha Vashishtha Charitable Trust(SVCT) extends a hand towards the betterment of
the society and doesn’t shrug off its responsibilities towards the future of our society.
This is a cause for the betterment of all.
SVCT works for the child education, catching cancer and towards prisoner’s
employment.
The Jail system is like kidneys of society which filters out the toxins & re-introduces the
clean fluid back into our system. This aspect is important and has to be understood that
everybody who is in jail will one day be re-introduced into the society.
Therefore, SVCT tries & reforms these people and not punish them, as punishment will
only bring in ill-will & bitterness.
The social issue studied is cancer, its magnitude and implications on society. The efforts
taken by SVCT to curb this social issue have also been enumerated.
The initiatives taken by the private institutions as part of corporate governance and social
responsibility and its impact on society are also listed.
The activities of SVCT and its functional issues have been studied in depth.

5. PART 1: The study of the gravity of the social issue, its magnitude and
implications on the society
CANCER
Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth .Cancer harms
the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue
called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood
function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream). Tumors can grow and interfere
with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that
alter body function. Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are
generally considered to be benign.
What causes cancer?
Cancer is ultimately the result of cells that uncontrollably grow and do not die. Normal
cells in the body follow an orderly path of growth, division, and death. Programmed cell
death is called apoptosis, and when this process breaks down, cancer begins to form.
Unlike regular cells, cancer cells do not experience programmatic death and instead
continue to grow and divide. This leads to a mass of abnormal cells that grows out of
control.Up to 85 per cent of cancers can be prevented by avoiding environmental risk
factors like smoking, sun exposure, alcohol abuse and poor nutrition. Though age, race,
gender and family history cannot be changed, knowing your personal cancer risk can help
you devise a prevention strategy with regular screenings and healthy lifestyle choices.
Having one or more risk factors for cancer doesn`t mean you will get cancer. In fact,
many people considered high-risk never develop cancer while others with no known risk
factors become ill.
Types of cancer
Carcinoma
Carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm of epithelial origin. It is a tumor that arises in the
tissues that line the body`s organs like the nose, the colon, the penis, breasts, prostrate,
urinary bladder, and the ureter. About 80% of all cancer cases are carcinomas.

6. Sarcoma
Sarcomas are tumors that originate in bone, muscle, cartilage, fibrous tissue or fat. Ewing
sarcoma (Family of tumors) and Kaposi`s sarcoma are the common types of sarcomas.
Leukemias
Leukemias are cancers of the blood or blood-forming organs. When leukemia develops,
the body produces a large number of abnormal blood cells. In most types of leukemia, the
abnormal cells are white blood cells. The leukemia cells usually look different from
normal blood cells, and they do not function properly. Leukemia can either be acute or
chronic. In acute leukemia the abnormal blood cells are blasts that remain very immature
and cannot carry out their normal functions. The number of blasts increases rapidly, thus
creating a greater and earlier impact on the victim. In chronic leukemia, some blast cells
are present which are comparatively more mature, and thus can carry out some of their
normal functions. The number of blasts increases at a lower pace than in acute leukemia,
as a result of which such condition worsens gradually.
Lymphomas
Lymphomas affect the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and nodes that acts as the
body`s filter. The lymphatic system distributes nutrients to blood and tissue, and prevents
bacteria and other foreign "invaders" from entering the bloodstream. There are over 20
types of lymphoma. Hodgkin`s disease is one type of lymphoma. All other lymphomas
are grouped together and are called non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin`s
lymphoma may occur in a single lymph node, a group of lymph nodes, or in another
organ. This type of cancer can spread to almost any part of the body, including the liver,
bone marrow, and spleen.

7. EFFORTS TAKEN BY SVCT
CATCH THE CANCER
CANCER AWARENESS & DETECTION PROGRAM
Vision
Cancer is the most rapidly growing disease in India and is now reaching epidemic
proportions. The largest segment affected by cancer is Breast & Uterus Cancer in Women
and Mouth & Throat Cancer in Men. These happen to be amongst the most ignored
symptoms of illness as there is very little or no awareness about them in people &
especially in the urban poor. We at SVCT feel that if detected in time, these can be easily
treated. Our vision at SVCT is to help spread awareness and help detect these problems in
as many people as possible.
Objectives
•To help create awareness about Breast, Uterus, Mouth & Throat Cancer in the urban
poor.
•To hold medical & cancer detection camps in underprivi-leged areas to diagnose & treat
cancer patients.
•To hold seminars & video conferences in the slums to teach them self-detection methods
and spread awareness.
SVCT organizes camps to spread awareness to the uneducated and educated members of
the society. They organize camps in different parts of the country. They have a team of
doctors along with them who dispatch complete information about Cancer and its types.
They also inform about the causes and symptoms of cancers.
Free medical check ups are done of people for diagnosing cancer. Females are given
detailed information aboutBreast cancer by such camps and by distributing handouts to
them.

9. PART 2: THE INITIATIVES TAKEN BY THE PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS AS
PART OF CORPORATE GOVERNANCE AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
AND ITS IMPACT ON SOCIETY.
A) TATA MOTORS
True to the tradition of the Tata Group, Tata Motors is committed in letter and spirit to
Corporate Social Responsibility. It is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact,
and is engaged in community and social initiatives on labour and environment standards
in compliance with the principles of the Global Compact. In accordance with this, it plays
an active role in community development, serving rural communities adjacent to its
manufacturing locations.
Tata Motors believes in technology for tomorrow. The products stand testimony to this.
The annual expenditure on R&D is approximately 2% of our turnover. They have also set
up two in-house Engineering Research Centres that house India's only Certified Crash
Test Facility. They ensure that their products are environmentally sound in a variety of
ways. These include reducing hazardous materials in vehicle components, developing
extended life lubricants, fluids and using ozone-friendly refrigerants. Tata Motors has
been making conscious effort in the implementation of several environmentally sensitive
technologies in manufacturing processes. The Company uses some of the world's most
advanced equipment for emission check and control.
Tata Motors concern is manifested by a dual approach:
1. Reduction of environmental pollution and regular pollution control drives
2. Restoration of ecological balance.

10. B)RELIANCE INDUSTRIES LIMITED
Corporate Governance at Reliance is based on the following main principles:
Constitution of a Board of Directors of appropriate composition, size, varied
expertise and commitment to discharge its responsibilities and duties.
Ensuring timely flow of information to the Board and its Committees to enable
them to discharge their functions effectively.
Independent verification and safeguarding integrity of the Company’s financial
reporting.
A sound system of risk management and internal control.
Timely and balanced disclosure of all material information concerning the
Company to all stakeholders.
Transparency and accountability.
Compliance with all the applicable rules and regulations.

Reaching out to create new opportunities
Over the years, Wipro has developed a clear road to realize the vision of taking the
success to other sections of society who struggle to care for their own basic needs.
Wipro has developed software to help teachers and children in schools across India to
further the cause of education. The adult literacy software has been a significant factor in
reducing illiteracy in remote communities.
Wipro Cares
Realities keep changing in an unpredictable world. In the midst of this there arise crises
that need to be immediately attended to and through Wipro Cares, we strive hard to
address them. From community relief and rehabilitation in times of disasters to education
opportunities, health and wellness programs for the needy, we make sure that our social
initiatives touch every level of society that needs our help. Our Wipro Care program is
executed with the help of our employees who are free to volunteer their services and
other recognized voluntary organizations who make sure the goal is never out of focus.

Education is recognized as a key investment in Wipro, not only within, but also marked
and leveraged as a social initiative. Through the Applying Thought in Schools initiative,
we take our tagline seriously enough to build a network of social organizations
committed to education reform. Education quality, research and interventions are clearly

that the future lies in sustainable solutions that will never interfere with our environment,
an integral part of our social initiatives. With the formation of Eco Eye, we are now a
business that incorporates better ecological balance in every project we execute.

INTRODUCTION OF THE NGO:
SIDDHARTHA VASHISHTHA CHARITABLE TRUST
Works for Child Education: Poverty is not only related to hunger or homelessness. It
relates to the consequences of being uneducated thus making the children incapable of
coping up with problems of life and improving their social and financial status. SVCT
understands all aspects of poverty and emphasizes education as an effective remedy.
Works for Catching Cancer: Spreading awareness on the dangers inherent in accepted
social practices such as chewing of tobacco, early marriage, multiple pregnancies, etc,
which are responsible for approximately 70% of cancers in India. .
Works for Prisoners Employment: Every human being on the planet Earth is righteous
by virtue of his/her creation and has the right to lead a dignified life of freedom, where
the values of honesty, love and compassion for fellow human beings are innate.
Circumstances and surroundings sometimes place a person at the wrong end and govern
his righteous action to wrong doing.

15. ACTIVITIES OF THE NGO
 HUMAN TOUCH
VISION:
The children of inmates suffer for want of education, books and medical attention as
usually their earning parents are in jail and they also become stigmatic. Therefore, we at
SVCT feel that it is our moral duty to try, help out & support as many families as
possible. These children have done nothing wrong & deserve a chance to build their
future like all other children. They should not pay for the mistakes of their parents. By
helping these children, we will help to build a better society.
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this program is to make Educational & Medical Aid available
to all the families of poor & underprivileged inmates
To develop self worth in them
To help to face life with their heads held high.
To give them a feeling that they are not outcast from the society.
To ensure they do not get frustrated & take wrong ways.
To help build a secure society which has love, forgiveness & not condemnation.

All people who are convicted are not per say criminals. They are more often victims of
circumstances. They too were normal citizens who made a mistake & ultimately they too
will join mainstream society and therefore they should be given a chance to change. We
at SVCT strongly believe that human beings are not bad but circumstances make them
different from other people.
Therefore, SVCT is trying to help these people better life hence providing chance for
change.
OBJECTIVE:
Training in different fields (vocational training)
Help in getting suitable jobs.
To create awareness among youth & business enterprises to help them
rehabilitate.
Help them in becoming self-reliant, build self-worth & live a dignified life after
release.
To finance & support needy inmates after their release.

17. SWOT ANALYSIS OF SVCT
STRENGHTS
1. They have plenty of time to carry on their work on their different programs.
2. The organizations has strong reputation within the community
3. There are many big players of the corporate world who are attached to this
corporate organization
WEAKNESS
1. It is a new organization and it is less known in other parts of the government
2. They have small staff with shallow skills base in many areas
3. They are vulnerable to high attrition rate among employees because the
employees are less motivated to work.
OPPORTUNITIES
1. They are working on many sensitive issues like cancer, child education, and
employment of Tihar’s inmates.
2. Government and various other corporate giants are helping NGO's to fulfill their
vision.
3. Other NGO's from other regions are also extending a helping hand.
THREATS
1. The government might stop providing help to the NGO.

18. FUNCTIONAL ISSUES FACED BY THE NGO IN DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS
Human resources
1. The organization has a small staff with shallow skill base in many areas.
2. The attrition rate is also high because the compensation provided is less and that
is also not paid on time.
3. People are less motivated to work in the NGO because of hardships they
encounter during their work.
4. More often organizations were paying for training from specific project funds
from there own general fund.
5. Cost of the programmes and language constraints were cited as the key limitations
with the existing lot of capacity building services provided by this NGO.
Finance
1. The problem faced by NGO is in fund raising as this organizationdoesn’t take
public deposits; it takes grants from various corporate giants.
2. There is always lack of funds as they frequently organize camps for various
causes.
3. More often organization was payingfor training from specific project funds from
there own general funds.
Operations
1. Field staff often felt isolated& unsupported and felt that there was a lack of
understanding of the issues they were dealing with at field level.
2. Problems arise in starting camps for various health problems
3. Problem also arises in making society believe that prisoners are humans and they
also demand empathy from society.

19. Marketing
No marketing issues are faced by this organisation.They use newspaper brochures
pamphlets etc to market their camps.They also distribute handouts to create awareness
about breast cancer and many other diseases.

20. RECOMMENDATIONS
Various steps which SVCT should follow to carry on their tasks more smoothly are as
follows:
1. It should strengthen their ability of mass media to inform the public about their latest
efforts to the society. It requires educating the public by mobilizing the media.
2. It should form linkages and partnerships with universities and academic institutions in
order to form a new route of constructing a new fund route that can sustain their activities.
3. Recognize the need for facilitator in the structure.
4. Undertakean inclusive approach, recognizing the wide range of NGO's and civil
society organizations.

21. LEARNING’S
Being associated with SVCT was a great experience. It was a rare opportunity and our
learning’s can be summarized as below:
1. Learnt a lot about the working of an NGO, its vision, objectives and the problems it
faces in the various departments like finance, marketing, personnel and operations.
2. Also understood the initiatives taken by the private institutions as part of corporate
governance and social responsibility and its impact on society.
3. Studied about how cancer impacts the society and what SVCT is doing to curb it and
spread awareness about it.
4. Broadened our perspective about life and taught us that prisoner’s deserve a second
chance in life for a new beginning.
