Organisations have to start their sustainability journey. Project Management is an important skill for managing this journey. But exist there a way to do green Project Management? Here awareness and introduction to PRISM from GPM presented during a PMI Belgium Roundtable.

But what is sustainability ?
« Sustainable development is
development that meets
the needs of the present
without compromising the
ability of future
generations to meet their
own needs »
(Bruntland Commission -
UN)
12. A framework to perform Sustainable Project Management ?
13
PRiSM™ (Projects integrating Sustainable
Methods) is the sustainability based
project delivery method which
incorporates tangible tools and methods
to manage the balance between finite
resources, social responsibility, and
delivering “green” project outcomes.
It answer to the question : "How do I apply
sustainability to my projects?”
PRiSM establishes a framework of
considerations derived from ISO 21500,
ISO 14001, ISO 26000, ISO 50001 and
ISO 9001
(Extracts from PRISM)

14. Key Performance Measures
(Qualitative and Quantitative)
Based on an existing example of a Green City Project
Example:
Key Performance Indicators Environmental
•Energy: Number of green Buildings in the city
•Waste: Amount of dangerous waste treated
•Transport: Number of electric public transport
•Water Usage: Amount of building with water recycled system
•Materials and Resources: amount of promotional benefits to acquire local materials and their
impacts in the local industries. ie. Construction
Key Performance Indicators Financial
•Return on Investment: ROI
•Business Agility: number of days to resolve upcoming squatting, weeds, pests, unsafe buildings,
graffiti
Key Performance Indicators Products
•Servicing of Product: Satisfaction Survey Results (surveys carried out be independent agency)
•Lifespan of Product: The Enforcement Agency should have 60% Community Satisfaction
Key Performance Indicators Processes
•Maturity of process: Maturity of the EMS: Plan-Do-check-Act
•Maturity Efficiency and fairness of process: number of corrective actions and its financial impact
Key Performance Indicators Personal
•Labour Practices and Decent Work: Number of labor accidents and amount of money incurred
•Society and Customers: Number of children received training course regarding Sustainability.
•Ethical Behaviour: implement “Sustainability Awards” at school, restaurants, event organizer, etc.
15. To get SMP, Hercules has to perform a P5 impact analysis
17
- P5 stands for People,
Planet, Profit, Process
& Products
- Cover the complete
product life cycle (not
only during project)
- For each « P »,
broken down with
focus areas

17. A project without changes doesn't exist ! How to manage it
here ?
Assessment should
be done against the
5P objectives :
- People
- Profit
- Planet
- Products
- Process
Other steps in
process are similar
20
21. Thinkings & Tends
- Project Managers are key stakeholders in
the sustainability journey
- Some PM practices should be extended to
include sustainability practices
- Decisions for initiating project (portfolio
mgt) should also include beside Benefits
vs Cost, the sustainability impacts of the
project
- It stays so a wonderful world…

29. P5 and Products
A product defined as being any tangible or
intangible service, goods, change,
resource result or outcome undertaken by
an orgnization, using project management
processes to create, updated, expand,
maintain and eventually dispose of the
products, with the objective of using the
product to provide future benefit to the
organisation
30. P5 and Processes
A project consists of a unique set of
processes consisting of coordinated and
controlled activities with start and end
dates, performed to achieve project
objectives.
3 major types of processes :
- Project management processes
- Delivery processes
- Support processes
31. P5 and People
The focus areas are :
- Labour practices and decent work
- Society and costumers
- Human Rights
- Ethical behaviour
32. P5 and Planet
The environmental aspect of sustainability
concerns
portfolio, program and a project’s impacts on
living and non-living natural systems, including
land, air, water and ecosystems.
The focus areas are :
- Tranport
- Energy
- Water
- Waste
33. P5 and Profit
The focus areas are :
- Return of investments
- Business agility
- Economic stimulation
38. And how was your experience for this first Green Project ?
- Need to manage the cleantech
41
- by Project Management
- but with some improved approaches ;
- The green approaches
- impact most of PM disciplines ;
- will apply during the whole PM life cycle
- The journey starts... You are welcome in
joining...
Editor's Notes
Demander d’abord qui est actif dans des projets environnementaux?
Raconter mon intérêt pour le développement durable
Econochoc from Geert Noels
Energy field shifting : devices requiring less energy + sustainable energy
Is GPM or PRISM framework known in the audience?
Ask on audience what PM’s do to define a process? A plan, of course!!!!
P5 stands for People, Planet, Profit, Process and
Product
PMBOK should become greener in the following knowledge areas:
PM plan
Change control
Monitor & control
Scope definition
Resource estimating
HR planning -> labour , etc
Manage stakeholders -> CSR stakeholders, CSO
Project risks -> risk identification
Competite advantages
Complaince with regulatins
Customers more aware
Blakc out risk
Contradictions between siustainability and project mgt
If it it required to extend PM with sustainability, there are traditionaly some contrats (Silvius)
