What’s Happening Now? This presentation provides an overview of our upcoming unit that we will be learning about.
Essential/Unit/Content Questions:
Unit Summary: In this unit, students’ will be exploring different solids and liquids that exist in their surrounding environments. They will be learning about different solids and liquids and will be learning how to distinguish between the two by examining their sizes, shapes, colors, and textures.
Expected Roles of Teachers, Parents, and Students: During this unit, the teacher will take the most responsibility by planning out the different activities that the students’ will be completing throughout the unit as well as creating a time-line for the final project. The parents will be responsible to helping their child with his/her project at home. The students’ will be responsible for completing all of the activities throughout the unit and for working well with others, especially in their project groups.
Benefits of the Unit: There are many benefits of this unit. The benefits are listed below: -Students will learn what a solid/liquid are. -Students will learn how to use their 5 senses in order to distinguish between solids and liquids. -The students will be exploring several things in their surrounding environments.
Standards: 1) Classify objects as solids or liquids. 6) Compare size, shape, structure, and basic needs of living things. 7) Classify objects using the 5 senses.
Objectives: Have students’ go out into the nearest outdoor area and explore different objects that are both in solid form and liquid form. Once observing, the students will compare and contrast solids and liquids and will create a presentation to show and explain their reasoning’s to the class. Have students’ go out into the nearest outdoor area and explore several different bugs or animals that may live in that particular area. Then have the students’ do research in groups to find out who the parents are of the bugs/animals and what the similarities of offspring and their parents are. Project-Based Learning: Project-Based Learning can be defined in many different ways; however, I have my own definition of what this term means. My definition of Project-Based Learning is the following: A creative, innovative approach to learning through projects in the classroom that are both self-directed, and collaboratively hands-on. I believe this approach to learning i great. To me, I view Project-Based Learning as a form of learning that involves hands-onsef-directed tasks among students in the classroom that leads to deep understanding of the material being explored.
