Editor's Notes
So to set the scene;
This presentation is about the experience , challenges and benefits of having a group of 7 Library and Information Studies practicum students from Curtin University for 3 weeks all in one go.
As you may have seen in Murdoch’s adverts - we are encouraging potential students to “free your Think” and this was an opportunity to rethink the practicum experience. The quote from Sir Walter Murdoch which is the inspiration for the free your think campaign encouraged us to think outside the box.
My experience of hosting practicum placements is that often there is only a small amount of time for the students to do a meaningful project. With 7 students simultaneously we were hoping to intensify the experience and multiply the benefit and impact.
The project evolved through conversations between the University Librarian and Curtin’s head of department to start with. The scope of the project developed after exploratory one on one conversations with the students before the start of the practicum providing further information to develop ideas for areas of focus.
The practicum programme was meticulously planned out so that only minor tweaks were needed on the hoof, though we did learn a few lessons but more of these later on in the presentation.
