Simple Present Tense:

•To express the eternal truth-
•To express the present truth-
•To habitual actions/activity-
•To describe action in progress-
•To describe object, place and people -
The Sun rises in the East (S + O + V)
Hard work leads to success
Mumbai is the business capital
My brother works in software industry
He wakes up at 6 pm every morning
Usually his typist types his letters
•To express exclamatory sentence-
Wasim bowls and Sachin hits the boll.
A cooker is a metal vessel
The new car has three cylinders
Here comes the bus!
How well he plays!
English Tenses
Present Continuous Tense: S+ am/is/are+V1 + ing + O
•When action is in progress They are playing on the ground.
S + are + V1+ing + O
The bowler is getting ready to bowl.
•For temporary action Rahul is working in Pune.
The President is delivering his address.
•Future Action
I am starting a new business.
Raju is going to buy a new bike.
English Tenses
Present Perfect Tense: S + have/has + V3 + O
•Completed action – Relevance with the present
•There is no exact time relevance or reference
He has read War and Peace.
I have been to Delhi.
Examples:
They have just disused it with him.
English Tenses
Present Perfect Continuous Tense:S + have/has + been + V1 + ing + O
•Present Perfect + Present Continuous = Present Perfect Continuous
Ex.- Ajay has been teaching in this institute since 16th August 2009
Ajay has been playing cricket for the last two hours.
Simple Past Tense:
Past Tense
S+V2+O
•Action took place in the past- He played in the match yesterday.
He drove to Mumbai last week.
English Tenses
•To point out Single Action The Postman delivered the letter this morning.
•Habitual Actions in the Past Raj played cricket when he was in school.
I walked to school regularly when I was a child.
•Present Perfect Vs Simple Past-
He read the book in 2018 (Simple Past)
He has read the book and can talk to use about it. (Present Perfect)
English Tenses
Present Continuous Tense: S+ was/were+V1 + ing + O
•Action progressed in the past but not now.
Examples:- I was watching a television.
She was singing a song.
•Overlapped time of actions performed in the past.
Examples:- I was eating an apple when my friend telephoned.
My mother was preparing a meal when my father arrived.
•Used to show different actions in the past.
Examples:- At 9 pm last night, I was reading a book while my cousin was cooking
some rice.
English Tenses
Past Perfect Tense: S+ had+V3 + O
Ex.: - When I met my friend in the canteen yesterday, he had eaten his lunch.
•Used to show a sequence of events in the past:
Ex.:- After I had read the newspaper, I completed the homework.
- When I arrived at the office yesterday, the meeting began. (Simple Past)
- When I arrived at the office yesterday, the meeting had begun. (Past Perfect)
Past Perfect Continuous Tense:S+ had+been+V1 +ing+ O
Ex.:- I had been living in Delhi.
- I had been living in Delhi before I moved to Pune.

I had been playing cricket before it started
to rain.

Future Tense
Shall/Will + V1Simple Future Tense:
•I shall come even if it rains.
•He will join us soon.
Future Continuous Tense:
•He will be having a nap in the noon.
•We shall be visiting Pune on Monday.
Shall/Will + be + V1 + ing
Future Perfect Tense:
•The zoo will have closed by the time we get there.
•Raj will have left when we arrive there.
Shall/Will + have + V3
English Tenses
Future Perfect Continuous Tense:
•By 2020, Rajiv will have been running the school for ten years.
•When I see you next time, you will have been working as the Manager.
Shall/Will + have + been+V1+ing
•When I turn thirty, I will have been playing piano for twenty-one
years.

English Tenses Simple Continuous / Progressive Perfect Perfect Continuous Present Simple Present (V1+ s/es) Present Continuous (am/is/are+V1+ing) Present Perfect (Have/Has+V3) Present Perfect Continuous (have/has+been+V1 +ing) Past Past Present (V2) Past Continuous (Was/Were+V1+ing) Past Perfect (had+V3) Past Perfect Continuous (had+been+V1+ing) Future Simple Future (Will/Shall+ V1 Future Continuous (Will/Shall+be+V1+ ing) Future Perfect (Will/Shall+have +V3) Future Perfect Continuous (Will/Shall+have+be en+V1+ing)

English Tenses Simple Present Tense: Present Tense S+V1+O •To express the eternal truth- •To express the present truth- •To habitual actions/activity- •To describe action in progress- •To describe object, place and people - The Sun rises in the East (S + O + V) Hard work leads to success Mumbai is the business capital My brother works in software industry He wakes up at 6 pm every morning Usually his typist types his letters •To express exclamatory sentence- Wasim bowls and Sachin hits the boll. A cooker is a metal vessel The new car has three cylinders Here comes the bus! How well he plays!
  • 4. English Tenses Present Continuous Tense: S+ am/is/are+V1 + ing + O •When action is in progress They are playing on the ground. S + are + V1+ing + O The bowler is getting ready to bowl. •For temporary action Rahul is working in Pune. The President is delivering his address. •Future Action I am starting a new business. Raju is going to buy a new bike.
  • 5. English Tenses Present Perfect Tense: S + have/has + V3 + O •Completed action – Relevance with the present •There is no exact time relevance or reference He has read War and Peace. I have been to Delhi. Examples: They have just disused it with him.
  • 6. English Tenses Present Perfect Continuous Tense:S + have/has + been + V1 + ing + O •Present Perfect + Present Continuous = Present Perfect Continuous Ex.- Ajay has been teaching in this institute since 16th August 2009 Ajay has been playing cricket for the last two hours. Simple Past Tense: Past Tense S+V2+O •Action took place in the past- He played in the match yesterday. He drove to Mumbai last week.
  • 7. English Tenses •To point out Single Action The Postman delivered the letter this morning. •Habitual Actions in the Past Raj played cricket when he was in school. I walked to school regularly when I was a child. •Present Perfect Vs Simple Past- He read the book in 2018 (Simple Past) He has read the book and can talk to use about it. (Present Perfect)
  • 8. English Tenses Present Continuous Tense: S+ was/were+V1 + ing + O •Action progressed in the past but not now. Examples:- I was watching a television. She was singing a song. •Overlapped time of actions performed in the past. Examples:- I was eating an apple when my friend telephoned. My mother was preparing a meal when my father arrived. •Used to show different actions in the past. Examples:- At 9 pm last night, I was reading a book while my cousin was cooking some rice.
  • 9. English Tenses Past Perfect Tense: S+ had+V3 + O Ex.: - When I met my friend in the canteen yesterday, he had eaten his lunch. •Used to show a sequence of events in the past: Ex.:- After I had read the newspaper, I completed the homework. - When I arrived at the office yesterday, the meeting began. (Simple Past) - When I arrived at the office yesterday, the meeting had begun. (Past Perfect) Past Perfect Continuous Tense:S+ had+been+V1 +ing+ O Ex.:- I had been living in Delhi. - I had been living in Delhi before I moved to Pune.
  • 10. English Tenses Happening It had been raining all month. Happening before another event I had been playing cricket before it started to rain. Happening + Time Span Shivam had been working on the project for the eight months. Happening + Regularity Shreyankumar had been going to the school regularly.
  • 11. English Tenses Future Tense Shall/Will + V1Simple Future Tense: •I shall come even if it rains. •He will join us soon. Future Continuous Tense: •He will be having a nap in the noon. •We shall be visiting Pune on Monday. Shall/Will + be + V1 + ing Future Perfect Tense: •The zoo will have closed by the time we get there. •Raj will have left when we arrive there. Shall/Will + have + V3
  • 12. English Tenses Future Perfect Continuous Tense: •By 2020, Rajiv will have been running the school for ten years. •When I see you next time, you will have been working as the Manager. Shall/Will + have + been+V1+ing •When I turn thirty, I will have been playing piano for twenty-one years.
