3. What is Brick in civil
engineering?
Brick is a construction
material in civil engineering.
Brick is used to making walls,
pavement, and brick
structures, or for the
partition of a room,
4. Silica
50 % to 60%
Silica prevents raw bricks from cracking, shrinking and warping. The
higher the proportion of sand, the more and shapely and uniform in
texture will be the brick.
20% to 30%
Alumina
Alumina imparts plasticity to the earth, so that it can be moulded. If it is
excess raw bricks shrink and wrap during drying and burning.
Composition of a good Bricks
5. Lime
2% to 5%
Bricks should contain a little amount of finely powdered lime. It enables silica to melt at the
furnace temperature of 1650oC and binds the particles of brick together resulting in strong and
durable bricks.
Iron Oxide
It should be in the range of 5-6% for the good bricks.
It impart colour to the bricks
5% to 6%

• This are table moulded
• Surface & edge are sharp
• Metallic ringing when strike
each other
• Used for superior work
• This are ground moulded
• Surface & edge are Rough
• The quality of this bricks is
inferior
• The surface & edge are rough
• Does not create any metallic
sound
• Used for temporary and
unimportant work
• This bricks are over burnt
• Irregular shape & dark colour
• Used in Floor, Foundation &
Road

Bricks should have sharp edge.
Bricks shall not break in to pieces when dropped from height about 1 meter
Clear ringing sound when struck with each other .
It should not absorb water more than 20% of its dry weight .
It should have good compressive strength, not less than 35 kg /cm3
