Integrative Teaching Strategies
- Integrating values & concepts in study subjects
DIVINE Discovery is a teaching style where Positive
Imagination is used to better understand and easily
remember the concepts of different topics of subjects like
Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences or Languages
etc. and also reinforce Positive Values. This discovery
helps to increase emotional & spiritual quotient (EQ &
SQ)of students easily.

What is “DIVINE” Discovery in Education
• DIVINE is an acronym for :
– Discovering
– Inherent
– Values & Virtues
– Imbibed in
– Nearly
– Everything
DIVINE DISCOVERY is a Revolutionary Approach
to Integrate Values & Virtues in Education to
improve EQ and SQ (Emotional & Spiritual
Quotient).

This approach is based on the fact that:-
 Regular Education and Human Values cannot be two
separate things.
 Instead of forcing values as a separate topic in our
curriculum, we can identify & teach Values through everyday
education subjects like Science, Maths, EVS and Languages
etc.
The Values can be varying in nature from basic etiquette to
more spiritual leading to universal brotherhood & global
classroom concepts very easily.
09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP 5
Why should we discover inherent values in everything?
 We want values to be inseparable part of student’s personality.
 Learning values from moral education books in classroom for
1 or 2 periods is not enough.
 In the process of discovering values in lessons, the subject
becomes interesting and students will understand lessons better
without mugging up.
 Discovering Values for subjects from Nursery to Class 8
is very easy even though the principle can apply to all
topics till graduate level & beyond.
 Once the teachers become good in DIVINE touch, the
whole class becomes enjoyable for everyone & even weak
students can become part of the mainstream.

Central Idea
There is always (well almost) some VALUE to learn
from what we teach everyday.
 Tree
 Sun
 Air Air is so powerful yet very humble & modest.
If we teach this as well- Sun treats everyone
equally- poor or rich, young or old, hindu or
muslim.
Best example of the Value of Helping others.
Many of you use it already, right?
6
There can be n number of Values that can be learnt from each topic/object
09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DISCOVERY WORKSHOP
Let us discover inherent values in our surrounding…
Pen
Fan
Electricity We cannot see electricity but it is the basis of so
many appliances like fan, refrigerator, heater
etc. All of us cannot see God but God is the
basis of all living or non living things.
Fan serves us and saves us from the heat of
summer. We should also serve our parents,
teachers and people in need.
Pen can be used for writing either good or bad
words. The decision is ours.
Always think before making any decision.

The Guidelines for DIVINE DISCOVERY
9
1. Values should be related to the key concept of the topic
being taught.
2. Positive values related to the topic should be preferred.
3. Look for the value which age appropriate for your class.
4. Use simple language to convey what the Value means
5. Use Hands on activities & role plays wherever possible.
It requires little practice at first but slowly it
becomes your way of teaching & you will love it.

Problem:
A boy has 12 pens to distribute to a group of
needy people. But he wants to distribute
these 12 items equally to one or more.
How many ways can he do this?
1x12, 2x6, 3x4, 4x3, 6x2, 12x1
We learnt Factors of 12 while treating everyone equally

Addition Cooperation,
Teamwork,
Donate the
surplus
Let us ADD helping hands to make work easy…
Teach addition by making teams of students & then adding more students to these teams.
Students learn to join hands with existing teams to add to the productivity of the team. For
higher classes select some addition word problems related to the concept of teamwork too.
(refer to details)
Subtraction Sharing
Ask for help
When we give away our belongings to the needy, we actually subtract them from our pile…
While teaching subtraction do such activities that will make the students experience the joy of
sharing. For higher classes select some subtraction word problems related to the concept of
sharing too. (refer to details)
Multiplication Caring,
Helping
Caring for or helping others multiplies our happiness…
When we care for people, they smile, and as a result, we too smile. Thus, we multiply our
happiness by caring for people.
Teach multiplication concept by either drawing smiley(s) or using smiley cutouts. For higher
classes select some multiplication word problems related to caring for others too.
Division Divide
judiciously
Whenever we divide work, food, sweets etc. to people we should do it judiciously that is our
division should be based on people’s requirements and capacity to take care of things.
Money Charity Learn to donate money to organizations that work for the needy.
Factors & HCF Equality If I wanted to donate 12 pencils in such a way that each receiver gets the same number of
pencils and no pencil is left with me, then I can give 2 pencils each to 6 students, or 3 pencils
each to 4 students, or 4 pencils each to 3 students and so on… These are all factors of 12. Thus
while teaching the concept of factors, students can understand the concept of equality too.
Refer to the doc.

Mathematics
Addition:- The + sign means positive. We should keep adding
virtues and positive thinking in our life.
Subtraction: Lets reduce vices from our lives as we do subtraction
EVS : Solid, Liquid and Gas:
Students should be firm as SOLID about their life’s goal and
adaptable to any circumstances like LIQUIDs & spread out for
helping others like GAS.
Soil Erosion:- Hold on to the good advice given by teachers
and parents as the roots hold on to soil to prevent erosion.

Topic Value Description
Distance &
Displacement
(Class IX)
Goal
Orientation
If a person travels a lot & comes back to his/her starting
point, then even if the distance covered is large, the
displacement is 0.
Activity:-
(1)Take a small ball and roll it on the floor between two
walls. The magnitude of the displacement of the ball would
be negligible as compared to the distance covered by it.
(2)Roll the ball on the ground in a straight line in an open
area. The magnitude of the displacement would be the
same as the distance covered by the ball.
Ball was goal oriented in (2) but in case (1) it was just rolling
aimlessly back & forth between the two walls.
Like the ball (2), we should be clear about our goal and work
towards it in the right direction. If we spend hours watching
movies or work hard in doing worthless jobs like spreading
litter or disturbing others, what do we get? Nothing. We
should think wisely about where we are investing time.

Topic Value Description
Microorganisms
(Class VIII)
Universalness
(Available for
everyone
everywhere)
The microorganisms are not visible with naked eyes but they
can be felt by looking at the changes made in environment by
them.
e.g. Peculiar smell of soil bacteria, when rain wets the soil,
milk changing into curd,
Similarly, the universal life force or God cannot be seen with
eyes but can be felt when we think about who is really behind
all the natural phenomena happening around us.
Metals(Class VIII)
Non-metals
Power of
discrimination
Activity :- Use battery & bulb to show that electricity can pass
through copper wires or iron nails. Use some non-metals like
wood or plastic in the circuit and students will see that
electricity does not flow through them.
Metals are good conductors and non-metals are bad
conductors of heat & electricity. We should behave like metals
to let positive thoughts & positive advice given by parents &
teachers flow through us and behave like non-metals
whenever we come across negative thoughts or bad company.

Natural Fibers
(Class VI-VIII)
Endurance
Cooperation
The natural fiber undergoes ginning, spinning & then
weaving before it is of use to us.
Activity :- Ask the children to try to make cotton thread by
drawing out and twisting cotton.
Here fiber has to undergo so many changes before it is of
use to us. We get the message of endurance from fiber. We
should also be firm & tolerate all odds to become great and
be of use to our society.
Activity :- Teacher can use knitting needles to knit together
two types of threads.
One or more types of fibers can be knit together to make
different fabrics. We learn to cooperate here.

Coal & Petroleum
(Class VIII)
Save Time,
Self-control,
Thankfulness
Non-renewable resources like coal & petroleum are precious and
limited and they are used to produce electricity, used as cooking
fuel, fuel for vehicles etc.
->Activity1 :- Make groups of 5 students. Each group lists out ways
on wisely using electricity, gas fuel, vehicle fuel etc.
For conservation of fossil fuels, we need to control their usage.
Similarly, time is also precious & limited so we should save time. For
saving time, we all need to have the power of self-control. Self-
Control will enable us to limit the time spent on watching TV,
gossiping, chatting, internet surfing etc.
->Activity 2 :- Ask the same group to list out ways to save time.
->Activity3 :- Ask each student to list 10 very useful things given to
them by parents, teachers or mother nature. Ask them have they
ever thanked the latter for all these precious gifts?
Let us be thankful to nature for all the renewable and non-
renewable resources. If we learn to be thankful for every little thing
in our life, happiness will stay with us forever.

States of Matter
(Class IV, V, VI)
Firm & Strong
Adaptable
Stress Free
Activity :- Make three baskets labeled as solid, liquid and
gas. Keep a stack of pictures of various objects. Each
student comes and picks a picture, shows it to the class &
then puts it in the correct basket.
We should be firm & strong as a solid to face any problems.
We should be adaptable to circumstances just as the liquid
takes the shape of any vessel in which it is poured
We should be stress free as a gas and spread goodness all
over.
Soil Erosion
(Class III-VI)
Retaining Good
Advice
Hold on to the good advice given by teachers and parents as
the roots hold on to soil to prevent erosion.
Activity :- Take the children near a large old banyan tree to
observe how the roots hold on to the soil. You can also
show them shrubs & herbs holding on to the soil with their
roots.

Topic Value Description
Magnet
(Class V-VII)
Strong will
power
A magnet is so strong that it makes all objects made of iron
which come in contact with it behave like it. Similarly, we
should be so strong that instead of us being influenced by
bad company, others improve in our company.
Activity :- Get a magnet, a small iron sheet, nails & safety–
pins to show how iron objects also become magnetic.
Lens
(Class VII)
Be focused Activity :- Take a magnifying glass which is a convex lens in
the sun & focus the sunlight on to the tip of a match stick.
The match-stick gets lighted.
Convex lens or Concave Mirrors can converge the rays of
light to a focal point. Many concave mirrors are used at
several places to focus at one point to produce heat. This
heat is used to produce steam, which in turn runs turbines
to produce electricity. Thus, the ability of Convex lens or
Concave Mirror to focus makes them so powerful.
Here we learn to focus on the work we are doing forgetting
about past & future to produce good work.

Topic Value Description
Physical &
Chemical Change
(Class V, VI)
Integrity
Change for good
Activity :- physical changes- An ice-cube melting into water
can be easily observed in class, crumbling of newspaper etc.
Physical change is a temporary change where the molecular
structure of the substance remains the same.
Here we learn to maintain our integrity in all circumstances,
just as the substance does whenever it undergoes physical
change.
Activity :- Show in class, burning of paper or match-stick.
The chemical change is a permanent change where the
molecular structure also changes.
Here, we learn that we should change ourselves whenever
it will do good to us & our surrounding. If we have a habit of
disturbing others or speaking rudely or wasting our time
should we change? Discuss with students.

Refraction
(Class VI, VII)
Think Straight Activity:- Take a beaker filled with water. Put it in the beaker
holding it straight as in fig (1). It will not appear normal.
Put a pencil in it as in fig (2). The pencil will appear broken.
(fig 1) :- Light travels in a straight line in a single medium or
when the angle of incidence is normal. Similarly, we should
also think straight whenever our elders give us advice &
listen to them with a humble & positive attitude.
(fig. 2) :- When a ray of light travel from one medium to
another medium with different density and the angle of
incidence is not normal, then the ray of light bends and
then continues straight. Similarly, whenever our line of
thoughts comes across bad or negative environment, we
should change the direction of our thought to positivity and
continue.

Topic Value Description
Food
(Class I - VI)
Respect Food
Keep mind
balanced
Activity:- Do a roleplay to show how a complaining face looks.
Make faces and complain about your food. Then change your
role and praise about food. Ask students which one was better
and discuss.
Food is a gift from Nature that is the source of our energy. We
should respect the food that our parents give to us to eat and
not complain about the taste unnecessarily.
Activity :- Ask students what kind of food they have got for for
lunch break. Discuss if it is a balanced diet or not. Encourage
them not to get junk food to school.
As the balanced diet is needed for healthy body, the balanced
mind is needed for our healthy personality. If we have balanced
mind we will perform better in whatever we do & will be dear
to our teachers & elders. Meditation, reading moral stories,
speaking kind words, helping others etc. keeps our mind
balanced. For teaching meditation refer to “I can do” exercise.

Respiration
(Class VII)
Deep
breathing
helps in
controlling
emotions.
Mindfulness
Respiration is a complete process by which oxygen is
taken into the body, transported to cells and used to
breakdown glucose to release energy with the
production of waste products such as water and
carbon dioxide. Breathing is the first stage of
respiration. It involves 2 processes – inhalation and
exhalation. Taking in air rich in oxygen into the body
is called inhalation and giving out air rich in carbon
dioxide & water vapour is called exhalation.
Just as our body automatically takes in only oxygen
and gives out oxygen, make your mind so good that it
only takes in good thoughts from outside and gives
out bad thoughts.

Divine discovery integrate values with school subjects

  • 1. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP 1 Integrative Teaching Strategies - Integrating values & concepts in study subjects DIVINE Discovery is a teaching style where Positive Imagination is used to better understand and easily remember the concepts of different topics of subjects like Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences or Languages etc. and also reinforce Positive Values. This discovery helps to increase emotional & spiritual quotient (EQ & SQ)of students easily.
  • 2. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP What is “DIVINE” Discovery in Education • DIVINE is an acronym for : – Discovering – Inherent – Values & Virtues – Imbibed in – Nearly – Everything DIVINE DISCOVERY is a Revolutionary Approach to Integrate Values & Virtues in Education to improve EQ and SQ (Emotional & Spiritual Quotient). 2
  • 3. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP What is DIVINE DISCOVERY Values & Virtues Science MathsSocial Studies Languages Computer Science EVS Physical Education 3
  • 4. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP 4 This approach is based on the fact that:-  Regular Education and Human Values cannot be two separate things.  Instead of forcing values as a separate topic in our curriculum, we can identify & teach Values through everyday education subjects like Science, Maths, EVS and Languages etc. The Values can be varying in nature from basic etiquette to more spiritual leading to universal brotherhood & global classroom concepts very easily.
  • 5. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP 5 Why should we discover inherent values in everything?  We want values to be inseparable part of student’s personality.  Learning values from moral education books in classroom for 1 or 2 periods is not enough.  In the process of discovering values in lessons, the subject becomes interesting and students will understand lessons better without mugging up.  Discovering Values for subjects from Nursery to Class 8 is very easy even though the principle can apply to all topics till graduate level & beyond.  Once the teachers become good in DIVINE touch, the whole class becomes enjoyable for everyone & even weak students can become part of the mainstream.
  • 6. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DISCOVERY WORKSHOP Central Idea There is always (well almost) some VALUE to learn from what we teach everyday.  Tree  Sun  Air Air is so powerful yet very humble & modest. If we teach this as well- Sun treats everyone equally- poor or rich, young or old, hindu or muslim. Best example of the Value of Helping others. Many of you use it already, right? 6 There can be n number of Values that can be learnt from each topic/object
  • 7. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DISCOVERY WORKSHOP Let us discover inherent values in our surrounding… Pen Fan Electricity We cannot see electricity but it is the basis of so many appliances like fan, refrigerator, heater etc. All of us cannot see God but God is the basis of all living or non living things. Fan serves us and saves us from the heat of summer. We should also serve our parents, teachers and people in need. Pen can be used for writing either good or bad words. The decision is ours. Always think before making any decision. 7
  • 9. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP The Guidelines for DIVINE DISCOVERY 9 1. Values should be related to the key concept of the topic being taught. 2. Positive values related to the topic should be preferred. 3. Look for the value which age appropriate for your class. 4. Use simple language to convey what the Value means 5. Use Hands on activities & role plays wherever possible. It requires little practice at first but slowly it becomes your way of teaching & you will love it.
  • 10. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP Let’s Discover DIVINE in Maths Problem: My Dad gave me Five Ice-creams but also told me eating all is not good for health. So what to do? (I Shared ice-creams with friends) I learnt a Value in “Subtraction” 10
  • 11. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP Let’s Discover DIVINE in Maths Problem: A boy has 12 pens to distribute to a group of needy people. But he wants to distribute these 12 items equally to one or more. How many ways can he do this? 1x12, 2x6, 3x4, 4x3, 6x2, 12x1 We learnt Factors of 12 while treating everyone equally 11
  • 12. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Maths 12 Topic Value Description Addition Cooperation, Teamwork, Donate the surplus Let us ADD helping hands to make work easy… Teach addition by making teams of students & then adding more students to these teams. Students learn to join hands with existing teams to add to the productivity of the team. For higher classes select some addition word problems related to the concept of teamwork too. (refer to details) Subtraction Sharing Ask for help When we give away our belongings to the needy, we actually subtract them from our pile… While teaching subtraction do such activities that will make the students experience the joy of sharing. For higher classes select some subtraction word problems related to the concept of sharing too. (refer to details) Multiplication Caring, Helping Caring for or helping others multiplies our happiness… When we care for people, they smile, and as a result, we too smile. Thus, we multiply our happiness by caring for people. Teach multiplication concept by either drawing smiley(s) or using smiley cutouts. For higher classes select some multiplication word problems related to caring for others too. Division Divide judiciously Whenever we divide work, food, sweets etc. to people we should do it judiciously that is our division should be based on people’s requirements and capacity to take care of things. Money Charity Learn to donate money to organizations that work for the needy. Factors & HCF Equality If I wanted to donate 12 pencils in such a way that each receiver gets the same number of pencils and no pencil is left with me, then I can give 2 pencils each to 6 students, or 3 pencils each to 4 students, or 4 pencils each to 3 students and so on… These are all factors of 12. Thus while teaching the concept of factors, students can understand the concept of equality too. Refer to the doc.
  • 13. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP Let’s Discover DIVINE in Science Water Cycle Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation Rename Groups to Rivers, Lakes, Ponds, Ocean, Clouds We need Two Volunteers: One for Mr. “Sun” , One for Ms “Cold” All other people, make your self a water drop/vapor: On a piece of paper, Make drop of water on one side, vapor on other side 13
  • 14. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP Let’s Discover DIVINE in Science Water Cycle Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation Values learnt: Change is a way of life, No State remains there forever Be happy in all circumstances 14
  • 15. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DISCOVERY WORKSHOP Examples in Computer of DIVINE discovery… Hardware:- Our body Software:- Our mind which cannot be seen but controls the body Input Devices:- Our sense organs Output:- Our behaviour If we have a broad mind which thinks about the welfare of all, our behaviour will be good. 15
  • 16. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP Discover DIVINE in Languages English – Parts of speech: Harish gave book, pencil and eraser to the honest boy happily. Values that can be learnt?  Proper Noun- Head, Verb- Service,  Adjective- Look for Quality,  Adverb- Deep Insight, Conjunction-Togetherness,  Preposition- Relationships, Punctuation- Discipline 16
  • 17. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP Discover DIVINE in Languages English – Types of Tenses: Learn from mistakes of PAST, Don’t get tensed about FUTURE Do your best in PRESENT 17
  • 18. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DISCOVERY WORKSHOP Examples of DIVINE Discovery by teachers like you Mathematics Addition:- The + sign means positive. We should keep adding virtues and positive thinking in our life. Subtraction: Lets reduce vices from our lives as we do subtraction EVS : Solid, Liquid and Gas: Students should be firm as SOLID about their life’s goal and adaptable to any circumstances like LIQUIDs & spread out for helping others like GAS. Soil Erosion:- Hold on to the good advice given by teachers and parents as the roots hold on to soil to prevent erosion. 18
  • 19. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP EVS Computers 19 Source: GLOBAL Classroom
  • 20. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP English Hindi 20 Source: GLOBAL Classroom
  • 21. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 21 Topic Value Description Distance & Displacement (Class IX) Goal Orientation If a person travels a lot & comes back to his/her starting point, then even if the distance covered is large, the displacement is 0. Activity:- (1)Take a small ball and roll it on the floor between two walls. The magnitude of the displacement of the ball would be negligible as compared to the distance covered by it. (2)Roll the ball on the ground in a straight line in an open area. The magnitude of the displacement would be the same as the distance covered by the ball. Ball was goal oriented in (2) but in case (1) it was just rolling aimlessly back & forth between the two walls. Like the ball (2), we should be clear about our goal and work towards it in the right direction. If we spend hours watching movies or work hard in doing worthless jobs like spreading litter or disturbing others, what do we get? Nothing. We should think wisely about where we are investing time.
  • 22. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 22 Topic Value Description Microorganisms (Class VIII) Universalness (Available for everyone everywhere) The microorganisms are not visible with naked eyes but they can be felt by looking at the changes made in environment by them. e.g. Peculiar smell of soil bacteria, when rain wets the soil, milk changing into curd, Similarly, the universal life force or God cannot be seen with eyes but can be felt when we think about who is really behind all the natural phenomena happening around us. Metals(Class VIII) Non-metals Power of discrimination Activity :- Use battery & bulb to show that electricity can pass through copper wires or iron nails. Use some non-metals like wood or plastic in the circuit and students will see that electricity does not flow through them. Metals are good conductors and non-metals are bad conductors of heat & electricity. We should behave like metals to let positive thoughts & positive advice given by parents & teachers flow through us and behave like non-metals whenever we come across negative thoughts or bad company.
  • 23. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 23 Topic Value Description Natural Fibers (Class VI-VIII) Endurance Cooperation The natural fiber undergoes ginning, spinning & then weaving before it is of use to us. Activity :- Ask the children to try to make cotton thread by drawing out and twisting cotton. Here fiber has to undergo so many changes before it is of use to us. We get the message of endurance from fiber. We should also be firm & tolerate all odds to become great and be of use to our society. Activity :- Teacher can use knitting needles to knit together two types of threads. One or more types of fibers can be knit together to make different fabrics. We learn to cooperate here.
  • 24. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 24 Topic Value Description Coal & Petroleum (Class VIII) Save Time, Self-control, Thankfulness Non-renewable resources like coal & petroleum are precious and limited and they are used to produce electricity, used as cooking fuel, fuel for vehicles etc. ->Activity1 :- Make groups of 5 students. Each group lists out ways on wisely using electricity, gas fuel, vehicle fuel etc. For conservation of fossil fuels, we need to control their usage. Similarly, time is also precious & limited so we should save time. For saving time, we all need to have the power of self-control. Self- Control will enable us to limit the time spent on watching TV, gossiping, chatting, internet surfing etc. ->Activity 2 :- Ask the same group to list out ways to save time. ->Activity3 :- Ask each student to list 10 very useful things given to them by parents, teachers or mother nature. Ask them have they ever thanked the latter for all these precious gifts? Let us be thankful to nature for all the renewable and non- renewable resources. If we learn to be thankful for every little thing in our life, happiness will stay with us forever.
  • 25. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 25 Topic Value Description States of Matter (Class IV, V, VI) Firm & Strong Adaptable Stress Free Activity :- Make three baskets labeled as solid, liquid and gas. Keep a stack of pictures of various objects. Each student comes and picks a picture, shows it to the class & then puts it in the correct basket. We should be firm & strong as a solid to face any problems. We should be adaptable to circumstances just as the liquid takes the shape of any vessel in which it is poured We should be stress free as a gas and spread goodness all over. Soil Erosion (Class III-VI) Retaining Good Advice Hold on to the good advice given by teachers and parents as the roots hold on to soil to prevent erosion. Activity :- Take the children near a large old banyan tree to observe how the roots hold on to the soil. You can also show them shrubs & herbs holding on to the soil with their roots.
  • 26. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 26 Topic Value Description Magnet (Class V-VII) Strong will power A magnet is so strong that it makes all objects made of iron which come in contact with it behave like it. Similarly, we should be so strong that instead of us being influenced by bad company, others improve in our company. Activity :- Get a magnet, a small iron sheet, nails & safety– pins to show how iron objects also become magnetic. Lens (Class VII) Be focused Activity :- Take a magnifying glass which is a convex lens in the sun & focus the sunlight on to the tip of a match stick. The match-stick gets lighted. Convex lens or Concave Mirrors can converge the rays of light to a focal point. Many concave mirrors are used at several places to focus at one point to produce heat. This heat is used to produce steam, which in turn runs turbines to produce electricity. Thus, the ability of Convex lens or Concave Mirror to focus makes them so powerful. Here we learn to focus on the work we are doing forgetting about past & future to produce good work.
  • 27. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 27 Topic Value Description Physical & Chemical Change (Class V, VI) Integrity Change for good Activity :- physical changes- An ice-cube melting into water can be easily observed in class, crumbling of newspaper etc. Physical change is a temporary change where the molecular structure of the substance remains the same. Here we learn to maintain our integrity in all circumstances, just as the substance does whenever it undergoes physical change. Activity :- Show in class, burning of paper or match-stick. The chemical change is a permanent change where the molecular structure also changes. Here, we learn that we should change ourselves whenever it will do good to us & our surrounding. If we have a habit of disturbing others or speaking rudely or wasting our time should we change? Discuss with students.
  • 28. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 28 Topic Value Description Refraction (Class VI, VII) Think Straight Activity:- Take a beaker filled with water. Put it in the beaker holding it straight as in fig (1). It will not appear normal. Put a pencil in it as in fig (2). The pencil will appear broken. (fig 1) :- Light travels in a straight line in a single medium or when the angle of incidence is normal. Similarly, we should also think straight whenever our elders give us advice & listen to them with a humble & positive attitude. (fig. 2) :- When a ray of light travel from one medium to another medium with different density and the angle of incidence is not normal, then the ray of light bends and then continues straight. Similarly, whenever our line of thoughts comes across bad or negative environment, we should change the direction of our thought to positivity and continue.
  • 29. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 29 Topic Value Description Food (Class I - VI) Respect Food Keep mind balanced Activity:- Do a roleplay to show how a complaining face looks. Make faces and complain about your food. Then change your role and praise about food. Ask students which one was better and discuss. Food is a gift from Nature that is the source of our energy. We should respect the food that our parents give to us to eat and not complain about the taste unnecessarily. Activity :- Ask students what kind of food they have got for for lunch break. Discuss if it is a balanced diet or not. Encourage them not to get junk food to school. As the balanced diet is needed for healthy body, the balanced mind is needed for our healthy personality. If we have balanced mind we will perform better in whatever we do & will be dear to our teachers & elders. Meditation, reading moral stories, speaking kind words, helping others etc. keeps our mind balanced. For teaching meditation refer to “I can do” exercise.
  • 30. 09-Jun-2015 DIVINE DSCOVERY WORKSHOP More Examples – Divine Discovery in Science 30 Topic Value Description Respiration (Class VII) Deep breathing helps in controlling emotions. Mindfulness Respiration is a complete process by which oxygen is taken into the body, transported to cells and used to breakdown glucose to release energy with the production of waste products such as water and carbon dioxide. Breathing is the first stage of respiration. It involves 2 processes – inhalation and exhalation. Taking in air rich in oxygen into the body is called inhalation and giving out air rich in carbon dioxide & water vapour is called exhalation. Just as our body automatically takes in only oxygen and gives out oxygen, make your mind so good that it only takes in good thoughts from outside and gives out bad thoughts.
