Mr. McLaughlin emphasizes that, while bulge-bracket companies such as Morgan Stanley and GoldmanSachs may have cachet value, they frequently don’t havean incentive to provide the highest level of service for dealswith valuations under $1 billion.

When Lynk replaced Merrill Lynch with FTPartners, Mr. McLaughlin and his team spent six monthsacquiring an in-depth knowledge of the company, itsleadership, and its products. FT Partners ultimately found asuitable bidder in the Royal Bank of Scotland plc, whichoffered more than $500 million in cash for Lynk Systems.
