It was May 1994, back when I was in 8th grade. I was young and in love for the first time,
dating a girl named Carly, and she was the sort of girl every guy wanted.
Beautiful, radiant, smart, and full of life. Summer was just around the corner, and it's
starting to get hot, so my friends and I are spending more time outdoors - playing soccer
and even skipping class to play hour-long games of chess.

Abs. I'm talking flat, toned stomach muscles, and a super-tight waistline. I mean, he
looked like a champ, and whenever he took his shirt off in gym class, everyone noticed -
especially the girls.
As for me, I was always too embarrassed to take my shirt off. I was a rake. The only
definition you could see were my ribs.
Maybe you've felt like that sometimes - when you're at a pool party with your friends or at
the beach with your family, and you're too ashamed take your shirt off like everyone else

Next thing I know, somehow, Carly "accidently" brushes against Pete's abs, and she's
mesmerized as if she had just witnessed the most amazing magic trick. I just sat there
watching them, feeling like a total fool, a helpless loser, while a few of my best friends
looked at me with pity.
Later that night, it happened - what I'd been dreading all day:
Just as I was getting ready for bed, my mom knocked on my bedroom door with the
phone in her hand. It was Carly, and she wanted to speak to me quickly...
Before I even hear her voice, I already know what's coming. Her voice is different than
usual, and I can just feel that something is up. Then she drops it:
"Yuri, I think we should just be friends..."
I felt this knot in the pit of my stomach. I was 14 at the time, and this pain and frustration
was unlike anything I ever experienced before. Carly was my first girlfriend, and I felt like
she had just ripped my heart out and stamped on it. I wanted to run the bathroom and
throw up.
Now, that wasn't even the worst part. Two or three days later, I spotted Carly at school.
She was in the halls, holding hands with Pete and kissing him. Moments later, they're up
against the locker, making out, and she's running her right hand up against his chest,
under his t-shirt, caressing his toned abs. The other girls were watching her, jealous.
Let me be completely honest with you here:
I've never felt more inadequate than I did right there and then.
That is the moment when, for the first time in my life, I desperately wanted abs. I was
sick of feeling like a chump, sitting around, embarrassed to take my shirt off while other
guys stole my girl.
I wanted to feel like a champ. In fact, I swore to myself that I'd do whatever it took to get
abs like Pete - even if I had to do hundreds of sit-ups every single day.
And you know what?
That's exactly what I did. After all, that is what all the fitness magazines and men's health
magazines said I had to do to get sexy, toned abs. My mom even bought the ab-roller
from a popular 90's infomercial for me to use. I spent hours a day cranking out sit-ups
with that damn thing, even while I was watching TV.
Maybe you tried doing hundreds, perhaps even thousands of sit-ups and ab crunches
yourself. If so, you'll believe me when I say that it was a complete waste of time.
It didn't get me any closer to getting flat, toned six-pack abs. In fact, if anything, all these
crunches just made my stomach bigger.
Scientific Study Proves That Sit-
Ups And Crunches Do Not Help
You Get Abs
Several years later, when I was studying for my honors degree in Physical Education, I
learned that sit-ups and crunches and other similar exercises are practically useless for
toning your abs. All they do is build muscle, a tiny bit.
But they don't shift any of the fat that covers those
muscles!
In fact, after researching this topic extensively I recently stumbled upon a fascinating
study about sit-ups: I found it in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. A
group of four scientists set out to determine, once and for all, if ab exercises actually help
you get abs and a flatter stomach.
They split their test subjects into two separate groups.
24 men and women
The first group did 7 different ab exercises - 2 sets of 10 reps for each one! - five times
per week, for six weeks solid. The second group was the control group, they didn't do
any ab exercises.
Both groups followed the same diet, by the way. Do you know what they found?
After six weeks, the people in the first group were great at doing crunches.
But they weren't any closer to having flat, toned six-pack
abs than the control group, even though they did all
those ab exercises!
Here's the bottom line:
If you want to get sexy, toned abs, you've got to burn away belly fat. And the kind of
exercises most people think helps them get abs is mostly just a waste of time.
I'm sure glad that I gave up on sit-ups and crunches when I did. Back, when I was
training clients nearly every hour of the day, I helped many of them who due to doing
endless amounts of sit-ups for years, developed terrible posture and even back problems
- and here's why:
When you do a sit-up movement, or any other "hip flexion" ab exercise, your vertebrae
actually wedge together, crushing the precious cushion-like disc into between each bone
in your spine. It's kind of like standing on the side of a jelly doughnut.
That's right - it's not just your abs that get "crunched".
Think back to that study I just told you about. People in the first group were doing 2 sets
of 10 reps, for 7 different ab exercises, five times per week. That's 700 times! Can you
imagine the kind of stress you spine endures if you do 700 of them every week for six
months or a year?
If you take nothing else away from this presentation, remember this one thing:
Stop doing sit-ups and crunches.
They don't help you get sexy, toned abs. If anything, they just crush your
spine, cause dangerous muscular imbalances, and make your stomach
bigger.
Other Ridiculous Things I Tried,
Because I Was Desperate For Abs
Now, when I realized that I needed to get rid of the belly fat covering my abs, I tried
everything I could: more ridiculous "old school" ab exercises, tons of cardio, low calorie
foods, I even tried a few suspicious fat burning supplements - just like the ones you read
about in magazines or on the Internet.
How'd that work out for me?
It made me feel like a zombie, always crabby, tired and irritable all the time. Even worse
though, these "fat loss" tricks fool your body into thinking that you're going through a
famine, and do know how your body responds?
Your metabolism nosedives, and when you finally do
eat, the fat gets packed back on around your belly faster
than it ever did before.
Needless to say, if all those thousands of sit-ups ever did get me a tiny bit closer to
getting those sexy, toned abs I longed for, these starvation diets undid all my hard work.
After months of desperately trying, I was right back where I started.
Only now, I was burnt out, frustrated and depressed.
Have you ever felt like that? When you feel like you've tried everything to get the abs you
want, but nothing seems to work? I know I certainly felt that way.
I even started to believe that Pete was blessed with some kind of "six pack gene", and
that I would never get toned abs like his, no matter how hard I tried. Maybe people like
me were not meant to have an attractive body like Pete and the other guys and gals with
flat, toned stomachs. Maybe I should just give up and accept my "place" in life.
Thankfully, before I threw in the towel, I discovered an effect called Metabolic
Compounding.

What is Metabolic Compounding?

You see, ab exercises like sit-ups and crunches, they're designed to only stimulate the
superficial muscles of your core, under the mistaken belief that if you make these
muscles bigger and stronger, you'll see a six-pack when you look in the mirror. However,
these exercises more or less completely ignore your deeper core muscles. And I learned
that these core muscles are the key to getting sexy, flat, toned abs, even better than
Pete's.
Here's the reason why:
For most people, although this mass of muscle is big, it is weak and flabby because it
doesn't get used much. It just sits there, accumulating fat and working just a tiny bit.
(Spending most of your day sitting makes it even worse, as does training improperly!)

The very specific exercises I discovered, the ones I'm going to tell your about in a
minute, they are designed to target your core, activate those deeper, neglected muscles,
and turn your midsection into highly metabolic area that is strong and keeps fat at bay -
lean, mean muscle that has a raging hunger for energy, and burns through calories and
fat all day long just to keep itself alive.

That is the moment when, for the first time in my life, I desperately wanted abs. I was sick of feeling like a chump, sitting around, embarrassed to take my shirt off while other guys stole my girl. I wanted to feel like a champ. In fact, I swore to myself that I'd do whatever it took to get abs like Pete - even if I had to do hundreds of sit-ups every single day. And you know what? That's exactly what I did. After all, that is what all the fitness magazines and men's health magazines said I had to do to get sexy, toned abs. My mom even bought the ab-roller from a popular 90's infomercial for me to use. I spent hours a day cranking out sit-ups with that damn thing, even while I was watching TV. Scientific Study Proves That Sit- Ups And Crunches Do Not Help You Get Abs Several years later, when I was studying for my honors degree in Physical Education, I learned that sit-ups and crunches and other similar exercises are practically useless for toning your abs. All they do is build muscle, a tiny bit. But they don't shift any of the fat that covers those muscles! In fact, after researching this topic extensively I recently stumbled upon a fascinating study about sit-ups: I found it in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. A group of four scientists set out to determine, once and for all, if ab exercises actually help you get abs and a flatter stomach.

They split their test subjects into two separate groups. 24 men and women The first group did 7 different ab exercises - 2 sets of 10 reps for each one! - five times per week, for six weeks solid. The second group was the control group, they didn't do any ab exercises. Both groups followed the same diet, by the way. Do you know what they found? After six weeks, the people in the first group were great at doing crunches. But they weren't any closer to having flat, toned six-pack abs than the control group, even though they did all those ab exercises! Here's the bottom line:
  • 10. If you want to get sexy, toned abs, you've got to burn away belly fat. And the kind of exercises most people think helps them get abs is mostly just a waste of time. I'm sure glad that I gave up on sit-ups and crunches when I did. Back, when I was training clients nearly every hour of the day, I helped many of them who due to doing endless amounts of sit-ups for years, developed terrible posture and even back problems - and here's why: When you do a sit-up movement, or any other "hip flexion" ab exercise, your vertebrae actually wedge together, crushing the precious cushion-like disc into between each bone in your spine. It's kind of like standing on the side of a jelly doughnut. That's right - it's not just your abs that get "crunched". Think back to that study I just told you about. People in the first group were doing 2 sets of 10 reps, for 7 different ab exercises, five times per week. That's 700 times! Can you imagine the kind of stress you spine endures if you do 700 of them every week for six months or a year? If you take nothing else away from this presentation, remember this one thing: Stop doing sit-ups and crunches. They don't help you get sexy, toned abs. If anything, they just crush your spine, cause dangerous muscular imbalances, and make your stomach bigger.

Other Ridiculous Things I Tried, Because I Was Desperate For Abs Now, when I realized that I needed to get rid of the belly fat covering my abs, I tried everything I could: more ridiculous "old school" ab exercises, tons of cardio, low calorie foods, I even tried a few suspicious fat burning supplements - just like the ones you read about in magazines or on the Internet. How'd that work out for me? It made me feel like a zombie, always crabby, tired and irritable all the time. Even worse though, these "fat loss" tricks fool your body into thinking that you're going through a famine, and do know how your body responds? Your metabolism nosedives, and when you finally do eat, the fat gets packed back on around your belly faster than it ever did before. Needless to say, if all those thousands of sit-ups ever did get me a tiny bit closer to getting those sexy, toned abs I longed for, these starvation diets undid all my hard work. After months of desperately trying, I was right back where I started.
  • 12. Only now, I was burnt out, frustrated and depressed. Have you ever felt like that? When you feel like you've tried everything to get the abs you want, but nothing seems to work?
