Music:
Miss Alonso comes from a comprehensive musical background. She sang and performed songs she learned
from her mother in Spanish from the age of three. She continued musical training throughout her school
years and began serious voice study at nineteen. She studied with Kiriacos Aslanidi of San Diego, John
Hudnall of San Francisco and Michael Trimble of New York. Sonita, as close friends call her is an active
oratorio soloist and has performed Mozart's Coronation Mass, Vivaldi's Gloria, Handel's Messiah, and the
rarely performed Last Judgment by Spohr, to say nothing of the technically challenging Beethoven's Christ
on the Mount of Olives. New York area performances have included Clotilda in Norma, and the
understudy of Norma, Oskar in Un Ballo in Maschera, Guilda in Rigoletto, and Olympia, Michaela, Liu,
and Blonde.
A former member of the San Diego Opera, she worked as stand in for Beverly Sills in their production of
Tales of Hoffmann, in addition to understudying Marguerite and Siebel in Faust that same season. In
California, Sonia sang the mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors for the Walnut Creek Civic Arts and
Diablo Symphony productions. She has been a guest artist at the Diablo Music Festival, Sinfornia da

Camera, and many of the San Francisco Bay Area churches and musical organizations. She was soloist for
the Rutter Gloria in 2001 and performed a Valentine's Day benefit solo recital for the Youth House in
Sarajevo Feb 2001
Miss Alonso has sung the Queen of the Night at the Aspen Music Festival where she also sang Ghretta in
Street Scene by Kurt Weill and she was a recitalist that same summer. Miss Alonso is the winner of
scholarships from the Music Associates of Aspen, the Sigma Alpha Iota, Region 1 National Scholarship,
and a grant from the East Bay Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for
Women.
Volunteer Experience:
While in Hamburg worked with three productions at the Offener Kanal (Public Channel). One is a music
cultural program called, "I Trovatori" which is a magazine format to showcase unknown musical artists
from the classical and jazz fields. The second program was a magazine, which features "New Age" topics
and activities such as meditation, new nutritional developments, esoteric, everything from Astrology to Zen
and all the stuff in between. This program also sometimes tackled some controversial topics such as
Orthomolecular Medicine, Laetrile, Essiac, and others. We were not intimidated to tackle the truth. The
third, "Regio Live" was a TV magazine where I worked with a crew as sound engineer and cameraperson.
We broadcasted live.
