1.6 Introduction
1.6.1 Attention Getter
According to Robert Maynard Hutchins, “The object of education is to prepare
the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.” Such simple sentence may
give different perceptions to one that listen to it. However, in dealing with education
for our children, I believe that each of us here wants the same things to give to our
children. I believe that education should be taught to inspire and encourage these
students to be more than what they have learned in school. Therefore, education is not
only the responsibility of the teachers and school but also require participation of the
parents.
1.6.2 Reason To Listen / Need
My fellow parents and teachers of the association, thus it is important to be
involved and to acknowledge the power of education for our future generation. With
the advancement of technologies and information, it is important for us to provide the
best education for our children at every level that they are in. This speech is also
intended to give some suggestions in order to solve the problems. Such matters that
have been identified previously, includes: parent’s concern about the poor
performance of their children, especially in Mathematics, Science and English
Language. Parent’s urges for teachers and students in improving the teaching and
learning style for that particular subjects. Also to finds solutions in order to overcome
the insufficient funds to carry out school projects.
1.6.3 Thesis Statement / Overview
This speech is intended to give some suggestions in order to solve the
problems. Such matters that have been identified previously, includes: parent’s

the teaching and learning style for that particular subjects. Also to finds solutions in
order to overcome the insufficient funds to carry out school projects.
1.7 Body
1.7.1 First Main Point
Recently, there have been major concerns from parents relating to their children poor
performance in academic in the school. Many students seem to have difficulties with
particular subjects which are Mathematics, Science and English Language. As the president
of Parents – Teachers Association, such matter also worries me as I am a parent. As we
know, there have been a major changes happened to our education syllabus that requires
changes to particular subject. Perhaps, those changes did affect our children’s performance in
their studies. But to blame on such changes solely would not be fair.
As we know, in this meeting the problem that the Parent-Teacher Association ( PTA )
need to be addressed are:
Parent’s concern about their children poor academic performance in
Mathematics, Science and English Language Subjects.
Methods to improve teaching and learning in these particular subjects and;
To find solution to overcome insufficient funds to carry out its project for the
school.
The rising numbers of complaint from parents should be taken seriously by teachers
and this school as it is the responsibility of both parties to find solution for it. The inability of
parents to provide the basic needs of students, attend Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
meetings and limited interaction with children’s teachers among others are the findings from
a study conducted by Etsey (2005) as some of the causes of low academic performance.
Inability to provide basic school needs like textbooks, supplementary readers, food to eat
when coming to school, motivation, and school uniforms among others, may have rippling
effects on the child’s performance. As our education policies and methods nowadays are keep
improving, parents and teachers should be aware of such situations. Such poor performance
in academic may be affected by the ways that the teachers use to teach the students.
However, it is not the problems with the teaching style if the student itself could not
cope with the subject. To overcome this matter, parents could send their children to attend
6. 6OUMH1303 (780911125171001)
extra classes for the particular subject. Also, parents’ involvement in child’s education is
consistently found to be positively associated with a child’s academic performance. It has
been defined and measured in multiple ways including activities that parents engage in at
home for an example parents should make sure that they spend some times with their children
in solving homework.
Parent may also encourage their children to read books related to the subject and
revise may also help. The distinction between the activities parent part take in and the attitude
parents have towards education was highlighted by several recent studies. Internal motivation
to students is parental involvement indirectly to the educational progress of children in
school.
1.7.2 Second Main Point
Education does not only involve black boards and chalks anymore; it is a wide new
experience for the new generation. At the young age, our children are exposing to difficult
subjects such as science and technology, languages and problem solving. Also, other subjects
who are familiar like geography, history and many seem simple to the adults but topics
discussed nowadays are getting complicated. This is where our roles as parents and teachers
should be played. As a parent, we should monitor our children’s interest and focus in study.
With a little help and encouragement from parents, I believe that these students could achieve
better result each time. The parent-teacher association should ensure that parents are well-
informed about any particular weakness that children have in studies through academic
report, via telephone, SMS and any other medium.
Teaching maybe the only role for teachers in school but with a little attention to every
student could help them to pay attention to the learning process in the class room. In order to
solve the problem the parent-teacher association should encourage their teachers especially in
Mathematics, Science and English Language to try new techniques and learning to attract
students. Such new techniques may include electronic medium or a new type of media such
internet, computers, videos, audios, field trip and many more. The use of computers in
teaching and learning activities at present able to help students master the subjects they are
weak. To overcome the gap in technology education and the mastery of Information
Technology, School Improvement should be made taking into account the provision of basic
amenities such as provision of software, internet facilities, databases and various necessary
infrastructure.
7. 7OUMH1303 (780911125171001)
Teacher also should be proactive in attracting students to listen to them by giving
rewards the students that perform or otherwise. Effective supervision of instruction can
improve the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom. Supervision is the process of
bringing about improvement in an institution by working with people who work with
students. It is a process of stimulating growth, and a means of helping teachers and students
to help them. Etsey (2005) reports that, effective supervision is necessary for efficient work.
It provides a climate in which people have a sense of working for themselves.
1.7.3 Third Main Point
In order to provide such medium, schools should have a suitable fund to support such
projects. Lack of funding may interrupt the process of learning for our students. To attract
such funding for the students, parents, teachers and school should cooperate for the sake of
education. This can be done through organizing charity funds or sales, mini carnivals or agree
to pay certain amount of fees to the association.
Parent-Teacher Association can also organize seminars and motivational camps for
students in school. Programs like this are important in order to create awareness and motivate
students to continue to learn and succeed. Academic performance also depends on the level
of their motivation to strive to learn. But the problem is the lack of activities that can
motivate student learning, such as Motivation Program and outdoor activities such as study
tours. To implement the program must have the financial resources and energy sources.
The parent-teacher associations can also plan and organize an activity that are
conducted in an open bazaar for all people around the school where parents and teachers will
take part in bazaars and sells a variety of goods such as handicraft, used clothing, flowers,
agricultural, livestock, foods and drinks. Part of the proceeds of the sale will be donated to
the school. In addition, the parent-teacher association can also organize sports games like
badminton, soccer, volleyball or even traditional carnivals in an effort to raise funds to
address the problems faced.
As an organization, the parent and teacher also can establish an education fund for
student in school. The fund raised can be used as welfare and can give a benefit to the school
to helps student. With contributions in the form of equipment such as amplifiers, computers,
projectors, and other required by the school can solve the problems that require student
learning, especially for those who are less fortunate.

1.8 Conclusion
1.8.1 Review Of Main Points
Teachers and school should not be the only party that is responsible for the poor
performance in academic of the students. Parents and students it selves, should also
participate and help to identify the reasons toward the problem. When parents get involved in
the classroom, more hands-on activities (which simply could not be managed without
additional help) become possible. Children do need to learn to in a group setting, and with
parents and teachers working together, the child can find success with their education. A
contribution can be implemented by parents in cooperation with school teachers would be to
implement extra classes to help students, especially students who are less intelligent in order
to strengthen the skills and knowledge learned in the classroom in order to enhance their
performance and achievement in learning to control subjects that they are weak
Advancement in technology and information should be used wisely by all parties to
improve the academic performance and also improve the learning and teaching methods at
school. As a teacher work to involve parents, their relationship with children also tend to
improve. With more time for each child, increased understanding, and a more exciting
curriculum, children respond more positively to teachers.
Parent-teacher association should also act as the main entity allows groups of parents
and teachers to share and exchange views and information on current education and methods
to enhance the academic and co-curricular student achievement. The School Management in
collaboration with the parent-teacher association;
Should govern the design and activities to sensitize parents and the community
that the responsibilities for educating their children are not supposed to put
100 % of the teachers in the school.
PTA should be organized towards helping parents and communities to acquire
knowledge and skills as well as build a positive attitude and appropriate.
Activities shall be related to the development of an integrated and holistic their
children physically, emotionally spiritually and intellectually.
9. 9OUMH1303 (780911125171001)
In addition it should be fostered awareness among parents that the
responsibility to provide education that is true (intrinsic) begins at home and in
school developed by teachers either in the classroom or outside the classroom
through extra-curricular activities. Then the students' own practice and
appreciate all the knowledge acquired it in daily life.
1.8.2 Closure
Education of any forms is life-long learning experiences that happen to everyone.
Parents are always the closest companion that set attitude of their children. Along the way,
school and teachers also plays a role mould these children into a better shape for the nation.
Parent’s concerns and teacher’s attentions may help students to feel more useful and inspired
to be more than an ordinary person. When parents and teachers work together, children’s
poor performance especially in those three subjects will improved.
Children who see a variety of concerned adults working to help them improve their
school performance respond positively, leading to increased achievement. This involvement
makes it clear to children that schooling is important; as a result, their motivation to succeed
is strengthened. Just as with parents and teachers combine efforts on their behalf. Parent-
teacher association should also act as the main entity allows groups of parents and teachers to
share and exchange views and information on current education and methods to enhance the
academic and co-curricular student achievement.
A commitment, cooperation and contributions of various stakeholders such as
community, parents, students and teachers themselves are very important in maintaining
excellence as a new generation of students as individuals who are able to contribute and
develop the community.
