BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Biotechnology is that subject of Biology which is widely
making the use of biological system, an organism and
specific constituent of an organism to develop new product
or process and improve the exiting ones.
DEFINITION
• The American CheMical Society defines biotechnology as
the application of biological organisms, systems, or
processes by various industries to learning about the
science of life and the improvement of the value of
materials and organisms such as pharmaceuticals, crops,
and livestock.
DEFINITION
• The European Federation of Biotechnology, biotechnology
is the integration of natural science and organisms, cells,
parts thereof, and molecular analogues for products and
services.
• Mainly Biotechnology is established on the basic Life
sciences
• Molecular Biology
• Cell biology
• Biochemistry
• Embryology
• Genetics
• Microbiology
BRANCHES OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Gold Biotechnology (Bioinformatics) is an interdisciplinary
field that addresses biological problems using computational
techniques and make possible to analyze the large scale
biological data and understand the information related to the
molecules. Bioinformatics
in various extents including
significantly
functional
biological
contributed
genomics,
established
structural genomics and proteomics and
the major role in biotechnology and
pharmaceutical division.
• Blue Biotechnology is based on the use of sea resources to
make products and to utilize them industrially, so the
industrial application of this branch of biotechnology mainly
dealing with refining and combustion and importantly the
production of bio-oils with photosynthetic micro-algae.
• Green Biotechnology is that branch which uses
agricultural processes such as micropropagation, transgenic
plants, industrial applications. It is mainly focused on the
development and advancement of agriculture so this area of
biotechnology is also considered as next phase of green
revolution.
• Red Biotechnology is the biotechnology which uses
of medicinetechniques and
(pharmaceutical
procedures
industries)
in the field
and in health sector. This
branch is chiefly dealing with the production of vaccines,
antibiotics, regenerative therapies, formation of artificial
organs and new diagnostics of aliments.
• White Biotechnology or Industrial biotechnology deals with
the process and resources functional in industries to produce
the industrial goods such as enzymes as a chemical catalyst.
• Yellow Biotechnology is that biotechnology which is used
in food production such as making wine cheese and beer by
fermentation. This branch is also refer to biotechnology
applied to insects. The biotechnological strategies to
control the harmful insects and the use of genes of insects
for research and utilization in agricultural and medicinal
sectors.
• Gray Biotechnology is refers to environmental usages and
emphasize on the maintenance of biodiversity and removal of
pollutants.
• Brown Biotechnology is that branch which deals with the
management arid lands and desserts.
• Violet biotechnology is associated with law, ethical and
philosophical issues related to biotechnology.
• Dark Biotechnology refers to bioterrorism or biological
weapons and biowarfare which utilize the microorganism
and toxins which responsible for causing lethal diseases in
human, livestocks and crops.
APPLICATION OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
• Principally biotechnology has four application in main industrial
areas
• Health care
• Crop production
• Non-Food industrial uses Of crops and other products
• Environmental uses
MEDICINE
• Pharmaceutical drugs discoveries
• Pharmacogenomics (a combination of pharmacology and
genomics).
• Genetic testing (genetic screening)
AGRICULTURE
• Genetically modified crops or GM crops are plants used in
agriculture.
• Examples in food crops include resistance to certain pests,
diseases, stressful environmental conditions, reduction of
spoilage and improving the nutrient profile of crops.
• Examples in non food crops include production of
pharmaceutical agents, biofuels and other industrial goods ,
as well as for bioremediation.
INDUSTRIAL
• Biotechnology for industrial purposes
• Industrial fermentation
• It include the practice of using cells such as
microorganisms, or component of cell like enzymes, to
generate industrially useful products in sectors such as
chemicals, food and feed, detergents papers and pulps,
textile and biofuels.
ENVIRONMENTAL
both• The environment can be affected by biotechnologies
positively and adversely.
• Positive effects means beneficial biotechnology (e.g.
bioremediation is to clean up an oil spill or hazard chemical
leak).
• Adverse effect from biotechnological enterprises (e.g. flow of
genetic material from transgenic organisms into wild strains).
REGULATION
• The regulation of genetic engineering concerns approaches
taken by governments to assess and manage the risks
associated with the use of genetic engineering technology,
and the development and release of genetically modified
organisms (GMO), including genetically modified crops
and genetically modified fish.
