harsh environments
• Widest variety of flexibility and toughness
• Withstands vibrations, impacts and fatigue
Epoxies have the greatest strength
and durability of all structural
adhesives
Vibration resistance reduces
opportunities for unwanted noise
Epoxy bonds have exceptional
resistance to shock, vibration and
impact loads
Impact Resistance

• LSE plastics – the best chemistry to
bond to LSE plastics with little to
no surface prep
• Panel-to-frame – bond to a wide
range of plastics and metals for
processes that don’t allow for
rigorous cleaning
• Enclosures – potential for process
improvement due to speed of cure
with a durable bond
Multi-substrate bonding for designers, engineers and
manufacturers who need efficient bonding and greater design
flexibility.

Material Bonding
Strength
Overview:
Bond to a wide variety of common industry substrates
including oily metals and most plastics including LSE plastics
or difficult-to-bond paints and coatings
Performance:
• Least sensitive to surface preparation
• Faster cure rate than epoxy or urethane adhesives
• Available in a wide variety of open times
Acrylics have faster cure speeds
and higher tolerance for
unprepared surfaces than epoxies
or urethanes
Acrylics adhere to a wide variety
of materials, including many
plastics
Acrylics are nearly as strong as
epoxies, with a chemistry that
can be modified to provide both
high peel and shear strength

45. 3M Urethane Adhesives
Urethane chemistries are ideal for creating strong, flexible bonds
between dissimilar materials.
Material Bonding
Overview:
Bond to most traditional materials such as concrete
and wood as well as many engineered plastics.
Performance:
• Better aesthetics without a visible bond line
• Variety of open times
• Bond and protect simultaneously
• Bonds provide the strength or flexibility to resist
shock, vibration and impact loads
Urethanes adhere to a wide variety of
materials, including wood, concrete,
rubber and many plastics
Urethanes provide better product
appearance by bonding different
materials without the bond line being
visible through the substrate
Flexibility allows urethanes to
absorb shocks and thermal
expansion differences between
dissimilar materials
NVH
Aesthetics
Primary applications:
• Composite panel bonding with a
class A surface – no read-through
of adhesive
• Glass bonding – adhesive’s low
modulus allows for fluctuations in
temperature
• Potting applications requiring
flexible adhesive

48. 3M PUR Adhesives
PUR adhesives are one-part moisture-curing formulations that
combine the initial speed of a hot melt adhesive with the strength
of a structural adhesive. Open times can be adjusted to suit your
process, and they have low to no Volatile Organic Compounds
(VOCs).
Material Bonding
Overview:
These adhesives bond well to metals, glass, ceramics,
wood and some plastics such as polystyrene and
polyacrylic.
Solidifies like a hot melt, and continues curing to reach
final structural strength, humidity required.
Performance:
• Rapidly reaches handling strength
• Invisible joints and smooth bond lines
• Prevents the migration of fluids, dust and dirt
PUR adhesives are excellent for
bonding materials such as wood or
plastic to themselves or to glass or
metal
Process Efficiency
Applied as a hot melt, PUR adhesives
rapidly cool down to handling
strength so they can be moved to
the next station
Strength
After cooling, PUR adhesives use
ambient moisture to continue curing
for hours to days while increasing in
strength
Primary applications:
• Panel and stiffener bonding for
appliances – due to fast cure and
ability to gap fill
• Woodworking – offers
improvements over traditional
wood glue
• Electronics – due to fast curing
and viscoelasticity
• Glass and plastics bonding –
flexible and elongating, fast cure

for a small bond area, and tight-fitting joints.
Able to bond to many different materials including metals,
leather, paper, elastomers, engineered plastics and some
LSE plastics.
Performance:
• Cures rapidly
• Reaches handling strength in seconds
• One-part products that cure by reacting with moisture
