International Experience

The Practice was founded in 1928 and the first building to achieve
international recognition was the Irish Pavilion for the New York
1939 World Fair.

Our 60 year international experience has comprised collaboration
with local architects e.g. University in Lusaka with Erhard Lorenz
Architects, new radio and television studios in Reykjavik with
Wilheimer Hjalmarasson, invited competitions such as the MEBCO
Bank in Beirut and the national radio and television studios for Abu
Dhabi.

In recent times a network of collaborative partnering has extended
our international capability and resulted in new projects such as the
recently completed GYP CYROI R&D incubator building in Reunion
Island in the Indian Ocean.

Urban Design & Masterplanning

Urban Design & Planning
Scott Tallon Walker Architects has over 50 years masterplanning
experience. Our projects include both green-field and urban;
university, healthcare, science, technology and business campuses,
as well as, residential and mixed-use communities. Some projects
involve a large soft landscape component, while others involve a
more hierarchical urban public realm strategy.

As development is part of an on-going process of evolution,
masterplanning needs to provide flexibility for growth and change
over time, as well as meeting immediate needs. For example, since
1960, we have produced a series of masterplanning strategies for
the RTE campus at Donnybrook, Dublin 4. These have allowed
the RTE organisation to grow and evolve, responding to changing
technology and progressive work practices.

As part of the masterplanning process, we consider the place being
created and how it will be used within a broader strategic context.
This involves analysing and working with the physical surrounding,
identifying potential uses and activities and their location, considering
movement patterns and establishing infrastructure requirements.
These are brought together within an overall planning framework
based on clear architectural, landscape and infrastructural principles,
informed by economic and cultural values.

We work closely with the Client team on identifying the short-,
medium- and long term objectives which guide how the
masterplanning strategy should be implemented. We prepare urban
design guidelines on the overall form and structure of buildings
needed to achieve the quality and character that delivers real and
meaningful places.

We are very experienced at communicating ideas and proposals,
as well as listening and working with our fellow professionals, to
provide the most appropriate workable strategy. As Design Team
leaders, we offer a holistic overall coordinated approach to the “City Quarter has achieved our expectations; it is fully let, is recognised as a seminal development

Mental Health Facilities
Core issues to keep to the fore front of the design philosophy are
the therapeutic environment, cleanliness, aesthetics, security and
safety and sustainability. Scott Tallon Walker Architects believe that
the design of successful Mental Health facilities should:

  • Promote staff efficiency by minimizing distance of necessary
      travel between frequently used spaces
  • Allow easy visual supervision of patients by limited staff. Nurse
stations on inpatient units should be designed to provide
      maximum visibility of patient areas.
  • Include all needed spaces, but no redundant ones. This
      requires careful pre-design programming.
Acute Psychiatry Facility - St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, National Forensic Mental Health Services (High Security Central Mental

making prudent use of multi-purpose spaces

Science & Research

Scott Tallon Walker has been responsible for the design of numerous
research facilities of international standing. We have developed an
expertise in the design of these technically demanding and precise
environments without losing sight that such facilities should be
uplifting spaces in which to conduct research.

There are many key issues that occur in the design of laboratories
and our team have a specialised skill set that ensure delivery of a
design that is both versatile and flexible.

We believe in creating an open research space which encourages the
exchange of ideas and allows for multidiscipline research. Through
well planned and innovative design techniques we promote the
optimum utilisation of space which interacts easily with commercial
interests.

We also focus on the issues of safety in the laboratory environment
which is important in promoting the welfare of staff. Another major
consideration in our approach to laboratory design is establishing
low energy and operation targets, as well as achieving a high
BREEAM rating.

Increasingly our clients from all sectors - HEI’s, corporate and
government institutes, require greater efficiency and versatility from
their research facilities whether existing or proposed, to respond to
emerging trends in science and the way research is conducted.

Communication & Media

Scott Tallon Walker has the unique experience of having designed
all the buildings for Ireland’s national broadcaster (Ireland’s RTE)
throughout a fifty year period. The completion of the design stage
of “Project 2025” for RTE in October 2009, a world class 50,000
sq.m digital cross-media facility, is the latest stage in the ongoing
development of Scott Tallon Walker’s experience in this field.

We travel extensively to study international best practice and
are thoroughly informed in the ever advancing environment of
communications technology. The expertise gained in relation
to aspects such as digital broadcast technology, acoustics and
sustainable servicing have been applied to the design of “Project
2025”.

This knowledge is added to the already significant experience in
designing highly complex projects such as the Shannon Air Traffic
Control Centre, Dublin Airport Air Traffic Control Tower and the
highly innovative and sustainable Telecommunications Network
Management Centre for Ireland’s largest telecoms company, Eircom,
which received an RIAI award.

The cross-fertilisation of innovative engineering and excellence in
architecture in each of these projects gives our practice a unique
knowledge base to serve clients in the communications sector.

Transport & Aviation

Scott Tallon Walker’s involvement with transport related projects goes
back as far as the 1940’s with the design and construction of Busáras,
Dublin’s central bus station. Busáras when completed in 1953, was
one of the first post Second World War examples of the International
Style in Europe, and was the first modern building to be constructed
in Ireland’s capital city. Its modern approach to massing, form and
materiality attracted reviews and attention from all over Europe.

The new Air Traffic Control Centre at Shannon, on Ireland’s western
seaboard, for the Irish Aviation Authority, vitally controls all air traffic
over the Atlantic between North America and Europe. Recent projects
include the Air Traffic Control Towers for Ireland’s international airports
at Dublin and Cork again on behalf of the Irish Aviation Authority. Being
an island nation, it is essential that the most modern air transportation
infrastructure is in place.

The new headquarters and workshop building for the Commissioners
of Irish Lights includes facilities for the co-ordination and monitoring
of all sea bound vessels around the coast of Ireland and the provision
and maintenance of marine aids to navigation.

In 2001, Scott Tallon Walker was appointed as master planners and
architects for the redevelopment of the existing regional airport at Lydd
in Kent to the south east of London. The scheme remains a potentially
viable project for future implementation. As part of the overall expansion
of Dublin Airport, Scott Tallon Walker worked with private land owners,
developers and the Dublin Airport Authority in development of a master
plan for the creation of a new airport terminal building, air side and land
side freight handling facilities and related commercial development to
the west of the existing terminal complex, flanked to the north and
south by the two parallel runways.

Scott Tallon Walker were part of the team appointed by Alliance Texas,
a Perot Company, in reviewing the development potential for “inland
ports” at Shannon and Knock airports in Ireland, and Gdansk Airport
in Poland. The consortium purchased 20 hectares of land abutting
the runway at Knock Airport, and Scott Tallon Walker prepared
infrastructure and development Action Plans covering 10,000 sq.km for
adoption by the Local Authority into its development plan for Mayo.

Civic & Cultural

Scott Tallon Walker Architects have designed some of Ireland’s most
important civic and cultural buildings: from the National Theatre at
the Abbey, to the award winning Dublin City Council headquarters.
The practice embraces and designs the broadest range of public
buildings, including theatres, pavilions, monuments, civic offices,
churches, stadia and community centres.

We recognise the challenges associated with the design of civic and
cultural buildings: the importance of issues such as transparency,
accessibility, urban regeneration and the key role such projects take
as examplars in sustainability.

We encourage and explore the shared relationship between Art and
Architecture. The practice has progressed a number of sculpture-led
public projects including two collaborations with the sculptor Michael
Warren: Tulach a’tSolais (The Mound of Light), a beautifully crafted
monument in a rural landscape; and a proposal to replace Nelson’s
Pillar in O’Connell Street, Dublin’s principal historic thoroughfare.

Over the last 20 years, we have been responsible for the
masterplanning of Dublin’s Gate Theatre buildings and have designed
a series of building projects that encompass extensive works of
conservation, refurbishment and design enhancements. Each of
these adaptive projects has been vital to the survival of the Gate
Theatre and to its continued artistic and commercial success.

Residential

Through the successful completion of various large-scale private
residential apartment developments in the UK and Ireland and various
high-quality one-off residential homes for specific private clients,
we have developed a skill base which understands the needs of
modern living while at the same time recognising the importance of
the technical, sustainable and cost efficient aspects of residential
design.

This understanding enables us to balance the need for contemporary
living standards with current sustainable design principles. We bring
to our design process an emphasis on scale, proportion and form,
with particular attention to orientation, natural daylight, acoustic
privacy, private and public open space, landscaping, circulation
patterns, space around buildings, interface with the public realm
and passive security.

As part of the continuing urban regeneration of Dublin’s Docklands, we
have completed a 616 unit luxury private apartment and penthouse
development in Spencer Dock. As part of the Government’s social
inclusion policy, this development includes a second phase Social
Housing Apartment scheme, designed to the same high quality and
standards as the private scheme. These developments form part of
the larger mixed use development of Spencer Dock which has been
masterplanned by Scott Tallon Walker Architects.

Hotel, Leisure & Retail

Hotel and leisure projects provide the opportunity to combine our
architecture and urban design skills with our extensive experience
in providing innovative interior design.

Each concept is developed in response to the specific nature of
the site and to create highly flexible spaces and uplifting interiors
to suit the needs and budgets of our client. The specific design
is carefully considered in a response that transcends fashion and
aims to produce an impact that will last the test of time. The hotels
in Dublin’s Financial Services Centre and Cork’s Lapps Quay both
relate to their respective river frontages and have had a spin-off
regenerative effect on their respective neighbourhoods. Every
scheme is based on sound and experience driven design principles
and is developed in close collaboration with the client to provide a
unique bespoke solution.

Whether a component of a larger commercial scheme designed to
provide active frontage and vibrant uses at street level, the renovation
and fit out of a high street department store, or the commercial centre
at the heart of a mixed use scheme, retail provides a key component
of a number of Scott Tallon Walker’s projects.

Our Practice designed Marks & Spencer’s flagship store in Dublin’s
Grafton Street. We were also engaged to renovate the former
Switzer’s store for Brown Thomas, Ireland’s exclusive department
store. This project involved the conservation of facades, the creation
of new shop fronts, and the rebuild of the three storey over double
basement department store.

The design of new BMW showrooms gave the practice the
opportunity to develop its interest in light elegant structures and
beautifully crafted glazing systems, while showcasing the BMW
product to its maximum advantage.

The Point Village Shopping Centre integrates urban design, planning
and architecture, providing a vibrant complex of offices, hotel,
cinemas and shops in Dublin’s Docklands. The design ensures that
the Point Village will become a destination in the City Centre, whether

Conservation & Restoration

Scott Tallon Walker Architects have advised Clients over many
years in the appraisal of the benefits of refurbishment over new
build or vice versa and also in comparisons of the merits of different
levels of refurbishment, both in vacant and live occupied building
environments.

Through our understanding of buildings and their environments,
we strive to work in a sensitive and cost effective manner with
existing building fabric to express the best aspects of the buildings
original design, while upgrading materials, structures and building
services to respond to the clients requirements in the 21st Century.
This response includes evaluation of fire safety and accessibility
requirements to meet current Building Regulations and occupancy
standards.

We take on refurbishment from first principles, evaluating the existing
site and building condition, surveying existing structures and services
and gathering original design documentation. Regeneration of a
building for future use is a first principle of environmental sustainability
and something we engage in with the Client from the outset.

Refurbishment covers a wide set of skills that we have acquired
through time and design rigor. Many projects require sensitive
conservation of existing historic structures, interior design, master
planning, consultant design team co-ordination and a wide range
of soft skills to ease temporary re-locations of staff.

In addition to new project refurbishments, we are often re-engaged
to refurbish buildings we have originally designed. We are currently
involved in several substantial regenerative projects, such as
the former award winning PJ Carroll’s factory in Dundalk, now
encompassed into the Dundalk Institute of Technology and the
FAS National Training Agency buildings in Ballyfermot and Finglas,
Dublin.

Our experience includes the complete sensitive refurbishment of
listed buildings such as the Royal College of Physicians, and the
mixture of refurbishment and sensitive modern intervention as in the
Gate Theatre in Dublin and the Tyndall Institute in Cork.

Industrial & Car Parking

We constantly progress the idea of purposeful aesthetics in all
building types and scales. Industrial process buildings and the
places people work should, we believe, have environments that are
ideally optimised for the intended industrial process and be uplifting
places to work.

Our solutions are often guided by the industrial production process.
Indeed when The Irish Times relocated their printing operations
from D’Olier St in the centre of Dublin to a larger greenfield site on
the outskirts, we embraced the printing process engineering and
integrated the building design parallel to process design requirements
providing optimum layout for equipment and operations.

Through our in-house Sustainability Group we encourage progressive
sustainable methods and design developments with reduced carbon
footprints. We incorporate natural day lighting into the core of our
designs and prioritise the integration of all services and BMS systems
to ensure minimal energy losses from building fabrics.

The same wish to generate a positive outcome can be seen intwo
recent functional car parking structures at St. Vincent’s University
Hospital and Blackrock Hospital, where each has become a
significant landscape feature on their sites.

Sport & Event Design

Scott Tallon Walker has recently expanded its traditional expertise
in the provision of sport and event centres to include projects
that now appear on the international stage. As part of its ongoing
portfolio, Scott Tallon Walker has designed and delivered sport
centres for many institutions including Trinity College, Dublin,
The National University of Ireland, Galway and at RTE, (Ireland’s
national television and radio broadcasting company), creating multi
functional buildings suitable not only for use for indoor sports, but
also as theatres, examination halls, student facilities and other such
activities. In addition, we have enabled Listed Buildings, as part of
their conservation process, to evolve into event centres capable of
competing with purpose built facilities, including the creation of a
conferencing centre in the Victorian home of The Royal College of
Physicians of Ireland, the ongoing modernisation and expansion
of The Gate Theatre, both in Dublin, the refurbishment of The Aula
Maxima in the 1840’s Quadrangle in Galway University and the
remodelling of both the Gaiety and Olympia Theatres in Dublin.

In 1998, Scott Tallon Walker were commissioned by the Irish
Government to prepare a master plan for the new national sporting
centre of excellence – Sports Campus Ireland, and to design the
new 80,000 spectator capacity National Stadium, capable of
accommodating Gaelic, Rugby and Soccer, as well as track and field
events. The Campus is currently under development, but a decision
was taken by the Government to provide Ireland’s International
Stadium for Rugby and Soccer by rebuilding the world’s oldest
international rugby stadium at Lansdowne Road. In 2004, Scott
Tallon Walker, with Populous, won the international competition for
the design and delivery of the new Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne
Road, which was completed in April 2010.

In 2010, we were appointed to design the new 13,000 sq.m. College
of Sports science, as well as the new 40,000 sq.m. sports campus,
which includes a 7000 all seater international athletics arena, two
Olympic standard swimming pools, gymnastics and ball game
courts, with associated players’ media and spectators’ facilities at
the King Saud University, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. The project is under
construction, and due for completion in 2012.

We are currently designing the new Centre of Excellence and new
13,000 seater south stand, with associated VIP, media and players’
facilities, at Pairc Ui Chaoimh for The Cork County Board of the GAA
in Cork City. The scheme is due for handover in late 2013. The broad
base experience within Scott Tallon Walker, as well as the most recent
specific knowledge in sports stadium and conference centre design
will enable us to provide clients with the optimum design solution.

Interior Design

Scott Tallon Walker has extensive experience in providing quality
interior design solutions for its clients. We have created the interiors
of many of our buildings, but also successfully work in modern and
heritage buildings, to create spaces and interiors to suit the specific
needs and budgets of our clients.

More innovative recent interior fit outs include the new stadium as
Lansdowne Road, Dublin, three Clarion hotels with conferencing
and spa facilities, the new corporate offices for McCann FitzGerald
Solicitors, one of Ireland premier legal practices, the headquarters
for the Commissioners of Irish Lights, in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin,
from where all of Ireland’s waterways and lighthouses are controlled,
supported and maintained to the new BMW showrooms for Keane
Motors in County Dublin.

The success of our design solutions are based on the seamless
integrations of the building, its architecture and character, with the
design of the interiors. Whereas this can be more readily carried
out where Scott Tallon Walker are the designer of the building in the
first instance, applying this discipline to either buildings designed
by other architects or to existing structures, is a process that we
have successfully carried out. Examples include interiors for such
companies as Pfizer, Bank of New York, and Bank of Ireland to
converting the administrative headquarters for the Royal College of
Physicians of Ireland in Dublin, which is a Listed Building of National
Importance, into a conference centre.

Our approach to fit out contracts commences with listening to the
client, visiting their existing facility, if such existing, and generating an
understanding of their specific needs, aspirations and requirements.
This process, which can include a charette type brainstorming
session, to include the various key personnel within the client’s
organisation, leads to the designers within Scott Tallon Walker having
a personal understanding of the brief. The team within Scott Tallon
Walker, which will be headed up by a director of the company, will
include both interior designers and architectural staff, to ensure that
the solutions being generated can be readily accommodated within
the selected building or structure.

Scott Tallon Walker is understandably proud of the broad spectrum
of interiors created by its designers. With any new appointment,
the skills and design flair from within the company will be tapped to
ensure that the delivered interior that not only properly responds to
the client’s brief but creates spaces that everyone will find satisfying,
uplifting, comfortable and efficient.

  • 14. Urban Design & Masterplanning Urban Design & Planning Scott Tallon Walker Architects has over 50 years masterplanning experience. Our projects include both green-field and urban; university, healthcare, science, technology and business campuses, as well as, residential and mixed-use communities. Some projects involve a large soft landscape component, while others involve a more hierarchical urban public realm strategy. As development is part of an on-going process of evolution, masterplanning needs to provide flexibility for growth and change over time, as well as meeting immediate needs. For example, since 1960, we have produced a series of masterplanning strategies for the RTE campus at Donnybrook, Dublin 4. These have allowed the RTE organisation to grow and evolve, responding to changing technology and progressive work practices. As part of the masterplanning process, we consider the place being created and how it will be used within a broader strategic context. This involves analysing and working with the physical surrounding, identifying potential uses and activities and their location, considering movement patterns and establishing infrastructure requirements. These are brought together within an overall planning framework based on clear architectural, landscape and infrastructural principles, informed by economic and cultural values. We work closely with the Client team on identifying the short-, medium- and long term objectives which guide how the masterplanning strategy should be implemented. We prepare urban design guidelines on the overall form and structure of buildings needed to achieve the quality and character that delivers real and meaningful places. We are very experienced at communicating ideas and proposals, as well as listening and working with our fellow professionals, to provide the most appropriate workable strategy. As Design Team leaders, we offer a holistic overall coordinated approach to the “City Quarter has achieved our expectations; it is fully let, is recognised as a seminal development masterplanning process. for the development of Cork City, is well received by our tenants, the public and has already acted as a catalyst for further Dockland development in the city. • 25. Healthcare Mental Health Facilities Core issues to keep to the fore front of the design philosophy are the therapeutic environment, cleanliness, aesthetics, security and safety and sustainability. Scott Tallon Walker Architects believe that the design of successful Mental Health facilities should: • Promote staff efficiency by minimizing distance of necessary travel between frequently used spaces • Allow easy visual supervision of patients by limited staff. Nurse stations on inpatient units should be designed to provide maximum visibility of patient areas. • Include all needed spaces, but no redundant ones. This requires careful pre-design programming. • 46. Science & Research Scott Tallon Walker has been responsible for the design of numerous research facilities of international standing. We have developed an expertise in the design of these technically demanding and precise environments without losing sight that such facilities should be uplifting spaces in which to conduct research. There are many key issues that occur in the design of laboratories and our team have a specialised skill set that ensure delivery of a design that is both versatile and flexible. We believe in creating an open research space which encourages the exchange of ideas and allows for multidiscipline research. Through well planned and innovative design techniques we promote the optimum utilisation of space which interacts easily with commercial interests. We also focus on the issues of safety in the laboratory environment which is important in promoting the welfare of staff. Another major consideration in our approach to laboratory design is establishing low energy and operation targets, as well as achieving a high BREEAM rating. Increasingly our clients from all sectors - HEI’s, corporate and government institutes, require greater efficiency and versatility from their research facilities whether existing or proposed, to respond to emerging trends in science and the way research is conducted. • 58. Communication & Media Scott Tallon Walker has the unique experience of having designed all the buildings for Ireland’s national broadcaster (Ireland’s RTE) throughout a fifty year period. The completion of the design stage of “Project 2025” for RTE in October 2009, a world class 50,000 sq.m digital cross-media facility, is the latest stage in the ongoing development of Scott Tallon Walker’s experience in this field. We travel extensively to study international best practice and are thoroughly informed in the ever advancing environment of communications technology. The expertise gained in relation to aspects such as digital broadcast technology, acoustics and sustainable servicing have been applied to the design of “Project 2025”. This knowledge is added to the already significant experience in designing highly complex projects such as the Shannon Air Traffic Control Centre, Dublin Airport Air Traffic Control Tower and the highly innovative and sustainable Telecommunications Network Management Centre for Ireland’s largest telecoms company, Eircom, which received an RIAI award. The cross-fertilisation of innovative engineering and excellence in architecture in each of these projects gives our practice a unique knowledge base to serve clients in the communications sector. • 64. Transport & Aviation Scott Tallon Walker’s involvement with transport related projects goes back as far as the 1940’s with the design and construction of Busáras, Dublin’s central bus station. Busáras when completed in 1953, was one of the first post Second World War examples of the International Style in Europe, and was the first modern building to be constructed in Ireland’s capital city. Its modern approach to massing, form and materiality attracted reviews and attention from all over Europe. The new Air Traffic Control Centre at Shannon, on Ireland’s western seaboard, for the Irish Aviation Authority, vitally controls all air traffic over the Atlantic between North America and Europe. Recent projects include the Air Traffic Control Towers for Ireland’s international airports at Dublin and Cork again on behalf of the Irish Aviation Authority. Being an island nation, it is essential that the most modern air transportation infrastructure is in place. The new headquarters and workshop building for the Commissioners of Irish Lights includes facilities for the co-ordination and monitoring of all sea bound vessels around the coast of Ireland and the provision and maintenance of marine aids to navigation. In 2001, Scott Tallon Walker was appointed as master planners and architects for the redevelopment of the existing regional airport at Lydd in Kent to the south east of London. The scheme remains a potentially viable project for future implementation. As part of the overall expansion of Dublin Airport, Scott Tallon Walker worked with private land owners, developers and the Dublin Airport Authority in development of a master plan for the creation of a new airport terminal building, air side and land side freight handling facilities and related commercial development to the west of the existing terminal complex, flanked to the north and south by the two parallel runways. Scott Tallon Walker were part of the team appointed by Alliance Texas, a Perot Company, in reviewing the development potential for “inland ports” at Shannon and Knock airports in Ireland, and Gdansk Airport in Poland. The consortium purchased 20 hectares of land abutting the runway at Knock Airport, and Scott Tallon Walker prepared infrastructure and development Action Plans covering 10,000 sq.km for adoption by the Local Authority into its development plan for Mayo. • 68. Civic & Cultural Scott Tallon Walker Architects have designed some of Ireland’s most important civic and cultural buildings: from the National Theatre at the Abbey, to the award winning Dublin City Council headquarters. The practice embraces and designs the broadest range of public buildings, including theatres, pavilions, monuments, civic offices, churches, stadia and community centres. We recognise the challenges associated with the design of civic and cultural buildings: the importance of issues such as transparency, accessibility, urban regeneration and the key role such projects take as examplars in sustainability. We encourage and explore the shared relationship between Art and Architecture. The practice has progressed a number of sculpture-led public projects including two collaborations with the sculptor Michael Warren: Tulach a’tSolais (The Mound of Light), a beautifully crafted monument in a rural landscape; and a proposal to replace Nelson’s Pillar in O’Connell Street, Dublin’s principal historic thoroughfare. Over the last 20 years, we have been responsible for the masterplanning of Dublin’s Gate Theatre buildings and have designed a series of building projects that encompass extensive works of conservation, refurbishment and design enhancements. Each of these adaptive projects has been vital to the survival of the Gate Theatre and to its continued artistic and commercial success. Commercial Scott Tallon Walker have established a wealth of experience and high reputation in the design and delivery of commercial office developments, covering headquarters buildings and campus developments for national and international clients in a variety of sectors including financial services, computer technology, legal and public sector agencies. This expertise has been established through a dedicated commercial design group within the Practice, which is constantly upgrading and developing their skills to meet the demanding and changing needs of the commercial office sector. We meet these challenges thorough a dynamic, skilled and innovative approach to design with an emphasis on teamwork at every level, recognising and understanding the needs of clients to achieve their business objectives and goals and responding in a proactive and flexible manner in achieving these objectives. We incorporate the latest trends in commercial office design, with an integrated approach from the outset to structure, building services, facades, sustainability and energy efficiency, cost economics, value engineering and life cycle analysis. We benchmark our performance in these key areas against Construction Consultants Key Performance Indicators which maintains our focus on the delivery of a quality product and service to our clients. We see the critical objective in this process as being the creation of a building design which combines best practice and commercial viability. This is achieved through the pursuit of design excellence and innovation, the provision of a dynamic, attractive and flexible working environment for employees and all users, maximising use of natural day-lighting, sustainability both in construction and use, overall efficiency and the creation of a high quality working environment. We apply this objective equally to all our commercial projects, whether they be for the large corporate headquarters or for a small scale commercial fitout. In each case, the client and their needs are of equal importance. Our approach to design excellence extends to our design of commercial interiors, which are innovative and inspiring with an emphasis on the creation of an appealing and motivating working environment. • 82. Residential Through the successful completion of various large-scale private residential apartment developments in the UK and Ireland and various high-quality one-off residential homes for specific private clients, we have developed a skill base which understands the needs of modern living while at the same time recognising the importance of the technical, sustainable and cost efficient aspects of residential design. This understanding enables us to balance the need for contemporary living standards with current sustainable design principles. We bring to our design process an emphasis on scale, proportion and form, with particular attention to orientation, natural daylight, acoustic privacy, private and public open space, landscaping, circulation patterns, space around buildings, interface with the public realm and passive security. As part of the continuing urban regeneration of Dublin’s Docklands, we have completed a 616 unit luxury private apartment and penthouse development in Spencer Dock. As part of the Government’s social inclusion policy, this development includes a second phase Social Housing Apartment scheme, designed to the same high quality and standards as the private scheme. These developments form part of the larger mixed use development of Spencer Dock which has been masterplanned by Scott Tallon Walker Architects. “All… buildings were designed and completed to a very high standard and this has been achieved with the dedication and support of Scott Tallon Walker as architects. • 86. Hotel, Leisure & Retail Hotel and leisure projects provide the opportunity to combine our architecture and urban design skills with our extensive experience in providing innovative interior design. Each concept is developed in response to the specific nature of the site and to create highly flexible spaces and uplifting interiors to suit the needs and budgets of our client. The specific design is carefully considered in a response that transcends fashion and aims to produce an impact that will last the test of time. The hotels in Dublin’s Financial Services Centre and Cork’s Lapps Quay both relate to their respective river frontages and have had a spin-off regenerative effect on their respective neighbourhoods. Every scheme is based on sound and experience driven design principles and is developed in close collaboration with the client to provide a unique bespoke solution. Whether a component of a larger commercial scheme designed to provide active frontage and vibrant uses at street level, the renovation and fit out of a high street department store, or the commercial centre at the heart of a mixed use scheme, retail provides a key component of a number of Scott Tallon Walker’s projects. Our Practice designed Marks & Spencer’s flagship store in Dublin’s Grafton Street. We were also engaged to renovate the former Switzer’s store for Brown Thomas, Ireland’s exclusive department store. This project involved the conservation of facades, the creation of new shop fronts, and the rebuild of the three storey over double basement department store. The design of new BMW showrooms gave the practice the opportunity to develop its interest in light elegant structures and beautifully crafted glazing systems, while showcasing the BMW product to its maximum advantage. The Point Village Shopping Centre integrates urban design, planning and architecture, providing a vibrant complex of offices, hotel, cinemas and shops in Dublin’s Docklands. The design ensures that the Point Village will become a destination in the City Centre, whether to browse in naturally lit shopping malls, see a movie or simply hang out in the pavement cafes fronting onto Point Square. 86 Scott Tallon Walker Architects86

  • 90. Conservation & Restoration Scott Tallon Walker Architects have advised Clients over many years in the appraisal of the benefits of refurbishment over new build or vice versa and also in comparisons of the merits of different levels of refurbishment, both in vacant and live occupied building environments. Through our understanding of buildings and their environments, we strive to work in a sensitive and cost effective manner with existing building fabric to express the best aspects of the buildings original design, while upgrading materials, structures and building services to respond to the clients requirements in the 21st Century. This response includes evaluation of fire safety and accessibility requirements to meet current Building Regulations and occupancy standards. We take on refurbishment from first principles, evaluating the existing site and building condition, surveying existing structures and services and gathering original design documentation. Regeneration of a building for future use is a first principle of environmental sustainability and something we engage in with the Client from the outset. Refurbishment covers a wide set of skills that we have acquired through time and design rigor. Many projects require sensitive conservation of existing historic structures, interior design, master planning, consultant design team co-ordination and a wide range of soft skills to ease temporary re-locations of staff. In addition to new project refurbishments, we are often re-engaged to refurbish buildings we have originally designed. We are currently involved in several substantial regenerative projects, such as the former award winning PJ Carroll’s factory in Dundalk, now encompassed into the Dundalk Institute of Technology and the FAS National Training Agency buildings in Ballyfermot and Finglas, Dublin. Our experience includes the complete sensitive refurbishment of listed buildings such as the Royal College of Physicians, and the mixture of refurbishment and sensitive modern intervention as in the Gate Theatre in Dublin and the Tyndall Institute in Cork. 90 Scott Tallon Walker Architects

  • 94. Industrial & Car Parking We constantly progress the idea of purposeful aesthetics in all building types and scales. Industrial process buildings and the places people work should, we believe, have environments that are ideally optimised for the intended industrial process and be uplifting places to work. Our solutions are often guided by the industrial production process. Indeed when The Irish Times relocated their printing operations from D’Olier St in the centre of Dublin to a larger greenfield site on the outskirts, we embraced the printing process engineering and integrated the building design parallel to process design requirements providing optimum layout for equipment and operations. Through our in-house Sustainability Group we encourage progressive sustainable methods and design developments with reduced carbon footprints. We incorporate natural day lighting into the core of our designs and prioritise the integration of all services and BMS systems to ensure minimal energy losses from building fabrics. The same wish to generate a positive outcome can be seen intwo recent functional car parking structures at St. Vincent’s University Hospital and Blackrock Hospital, where each has become a significant landscape feature on their sites. “The success of the project reflects the dedicated professionalism, expertise and skills of the team at Scott Tallon Walker and their outstanding input to all key areas for its duration. • 98. Sport & Event Design Scott Tallon Walker has recently expanded its traditional expertise in the provision of sport and event centres to include projects that now appear on the international stage. As part of its ongoing portfolio, Scott Tallon Walker has designed and delivered sport centres for many institutions including Trinity College, Dublin, The National University of Ireland, Galway and at RTE, (Ireland’s national television and radio broadcasting company), creating multi functional buildings suitable not only for use for indoor sports, but also as theatres, examination halls, student facilities and other such activities. In addition, we have enabled Listed Buildings, as part of their conservation process, to evolve into event centres capable of competing with purpose built facilities, including the creation of a conferencing centre in the Victorian home of The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the ongoing modernisation and expansion of The Gate Theatre, both in Dublin, the refurbishment of The Aula Maxima in the 1840’s Quadrangle in Galway University and the remodelling of both the Gaiety and Olympia Theatres in Dublin. In 1998, Scott Tallon Walker were commissioned by the Irish Government to prepare a master plan for the new national sporting centre of excellence – Sports Campus Ireland, and to design the new 80,000 spectator capacity National Stadium, capable of accommodating Gaelic, Rugby and Soccer, as well as track and field events. The Campus is currently under development, but a decision was taken by the Government to provide Ireland’s International Stadium for Rugby and Soccer by rebuilding the world’s oldest international rugby stadium at Lansdowne Road. In 2004, Scott Tallon Walker, with Populous, won the international competition for the design and delivery of the new Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road, which was completed in April 2010. In 2010, we were appointed to design the new 13,000 sq.m. College of Sports science, as well as the new 40,000 sq.m. sports campus, which includes a 7000 all seater international athletics arena, two Olympic standard swimming pools, gymnastics and ball game courts, with associated players’ media and spectators’ facilities at the King Saud University, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. The project is under construction, and due for completion in 2012. We are currently designing the new Centre of Excellence and new 13,000 seater south stand, with associated VIP, media and players’ facilities, at Pairc Ui Chaoimh for The Cork County Board of the GAA in Cork City. The scheme is due for handover in late 2013. The broad base experience within Scott Tallon Walker, as well as the most recent specific knowledge in sports stadium and conference centre design will enable us to provide clients with the optimum design solution. 98 Scott Tallon Walker Architects

  • 102. Interior Design Scott Tallon Walker has extensive experience in providing quality interior design solutions for its clients. We have created the interiors of many of our buildings, but also successfully work in modern and heritage buildings, to create spaces and interiors to suit the specific needs and budgets of our clients. More innovative recent interior fit outs include the new stadium as Lansdowne Road, Dublin, three Clarion hotels with conferencing and spa facilities, the new corporate offices for McCann FitzGerald Solicitors, one of Ireland premier legal practices, the headquarters for the Commissioners of Irish Lights, in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, from where all of Ireland’s waterways and lighthouses are controlled, supported and maintained to the new BMW showrooms for Keane Motors in County Dublin. The success of our design solutions are based on the seamless integrations of the building, its architecture and character, with the design of the interiors. Whereas this can be more readily carried out where Scott Tallon Walker are the designer of the building in the first instance, applying this discipline to either buildings designed by other architects or to existing structures, is a process that we have successfully carried out. Examples include interiors for such companies as Pfizer, Bank of New York, and Bank of Ireland to converting the administrative headquarters for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in Dublin, which is a Listed Building of National Importance, into a conference centre. Our approach to fit out contracts commences with listening to the client, visiting their existing facility, if such existing, and generating an understanding of their specific needs, aspirations and requirements. This process, which can include a charette type brainstorming session, to include the various key personnel within the client’s organisation, leads to the designers within Scott Tallon Walker having a personal understanding of the brief. The team within Scott Tallon Walker, which will be headed up by a director of the company, will include both interior designers and architectural staff, to ensure that the solutions being generated can be readily accommodated within the selected building or structure. Scott Tallon Walker is understandably proud of the broad spectrum of interiors created by its designers. With any new appointment, the skills and design flair from within the company will be tapped to ensure that the delivered interior that not only properly responds to the client’s brief but creates spaces that everyone will find satisfying, uplifting, comfortable and efficient. 102 Scott Tallon Walker Architects
