The Effects of Diabetes on
Everyday Life
2. Why I Chose To Study Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes
History of Diabetes in
my family
My Diabetes history
3. What is Type 1 Diabetes?
The Pancreas is not
secreting a hormone
called Insulin
Your body needs insulin
to process glucose
When too much glucose
gets into the bloodstream
this leads to
hyperglycemia
4. Symptoms: Diagnosis:
Weakness
Fatigue
Rapid Weight Loss
Polydipsia (Extreme
Thirst)
Polyuria (Increased
Urination)
Glycated Hemoglobin
(A1C) test (6.5+)
Random Blood Glucose
tests (200+)
Fasting Blood Glucose
test (126+)
Symptoms and Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes
5. Lane Moore
6th grader, just diagnosed
with type 1 diabetes
Takes Insulin shots
Still in the “honeymoon
stage”
The honeymoon stage is
common in the first few
months of diabetes
6. The Role of Insulin and Insulin Administration
Insulin is a hormone
secreted by the pancreas
Helps the glucose in the
body make it to the cells
so that it does not stay in
the bloodstream
7. Carbohydrate counting
• Correct
Carbohydrate
counting is VERY
important for
managing BG levels
and staying healthy
• It is healthy to eat
around 100-150
carbohydrates a day
to maintain weight
• Watch out for
starches and grainy
foods – they have a
lot of carbs!
•Fiber in food can
take carbs off!
8. Exercise and Healthy eating
30 min. or more of
exercise a day can help
maintain weight and BG
levels
A healthy, balanced diet
will help keep BG levels
and Insulin intake down
9. Sick Day Management
When sick it is always important to check BG frequently
An increase in insulin may be necessary due to constant
high BG levels
Check keytones if BG is higher than 250
Stay hydrated
Diabetic Keytoacidosis
10. Hypoglycemia symptoms Hyperglycemia symptoms
Syncope (Dizziness)
Hunger
Irritability
Tachycardia (Increased
HR)
Trembling
(Tinnitus) Ringing in
the ears
Thirst
Dry mouth
Blurry Vision
Fatigue
Treating low and high blood sugars
Editor's Notes
I have had Type 1 diabetes for 10 years and my grandfather had type 2 diabetes until he passed away from his sugar dropping in his sleep.
Stomach changes food into glucose
Glucose enters the bloodstream
The pancreas is suppose to secrete insulin to help the glucose make it to the cells
In diabetes the pancreas is not secreting this insulin and glucose is building up in the bloodstream.
I made an Insulin Administration Bear for Lane to know where to administer his shots
BG stand for Blood Glucose
If your sugar is over 250 even with rest, water, and insulin and vomiting occurs it is important to make it to the hospital because the patient may be going into DKA which is also known as Diabetic Ketosis.
Some of the symptoms can be the same and it can be hard to tell if BG levels are high or low so it is always important to check before treating so that you do not treat for the wrong BG level.
