The real estate industry is moving faster than ever. There are billions of dollars coming in from aggressive venture-backed competitors. There are many well-financed companies trying to minimize the role and value of the REALTOR. They have connected with real estate consumers and garnered their attention and loyalty.
Brokers are suffering. They are getting hit from all sides. Their profitability is getting squeezed from ever-increasing marketing costs and aggressive competitors recruiting away their agents.
Today, almost 90% of the traffic generated on real estate sites goes to non-REALTOR sites. Third party portals take the hard earned listings of real estate professionals and then sell back leads to the same people that did the work to cultivate the leads in the first place. What’s wrong with THIS picture?
Even though REALTORS spend thousands of dollars a month in advertising on portals, they do not believe they are getting a return on their investment. 88% of agents are dissatisfied with the leads they receive when they advertise on third party portals.
When asked WHY they continue to advertise on these sites, agents say ”I have no choice”. Consumers expect their listings to be promoted on portals because they believe houses don’t sell unless they’re featured there.
Even though agents believe the money they spend with portals is not productive, they continue to increase their spending. In 2018, Zillow generated $1.3 billion in revenues. That means, on average they collected $1000 per REALTOR or $83 per REALTOR per month. They are collecting more money from REALTORS than most MLSs and many brokers do.

So what can we do about all of this? Some say its too late – we should just give up and go home. Others are trying to find ways to put the REALTOR back at the center of the transaction. We believe that We DO hold the future in our hands. There ARE ways for us to take back our industry and provide an alternative to the industry outsiders.
I would love to share our ValleyMLS.com story.
The team at ValleyMLS has worked hard for several years to find a way to create listing exposure and generate leads for Alabama REALTORS. We’ve been able to create the 4th most popular site in the state of Alabama, second only to Zillow, Trulia and REALTOR.com – three highly advertised national sites.

ValleyMLS.com has been strong for many years, but we weren’t satisfied with that. With out continual improvements, we were able to increase traffic 42% in February over the traffic generated in February 2018. We’re very encouraged about the number of leads we will be able to generate for Alabama REALTORS in our peak selling season this year.
