Misconceptions
Santiago Blasco, Flor Claps
What is a
Misconception?
A misconception is a fact
about something, in this case
about WW1, that people
believe it is truth, but not
always is it.
Shell-shocked soldiers were usually
shot for cowardice during WW1
People think that in WW1, people who
were shell-shocked, because of the
war, were executed for cowardice. This
is not true. But there were executed
people in war. In Britain, 346
executions were carried out, in which
18 of them were for cowardice. But we
can not assume that every single person
executed was a shell-shocked man,
maybe some of them were. During
WW1, In Britain, there were 80.000
shell-shocked people, so not every
shell-shocked man was executed for
cowardice.
WW1 Saw a Few Civilian Casualties
People say that it was a soldier's war and that
some civilian casualties occurred. Soldiers
could fight, defend and were ready to
sacrifice themselves for their countries and
sometimes civilians couldn't. In central and
eastern Europe was where civilian casualties
occurred the most. We still don't know how
many civilians died fighting in the war,
(500.000 excess malnutrition)(1 million killed
by the Ottoman empire)(6.500 shooted by the
German army). But, in the First World War
countless of civilian lives were taken and they
should matter as much as the soldier´s.
American's intervened too late
It is said that the Americans troops intervened too late. People
believed this because when they entered to war its troops were
characterized by ill-trained, inexperienced and lacking the
extensive logistical support required. And when they first
attacked their tactics were characterized by heavy tactics,
missed opportunities and heavy casualties.
But as a matter of fact:
The full participation of US military and naval power not only
insured the allies did not collapse, it meant they were also able
to drive the German armies back.
Because of what was happening the germans realised they must
sue for peace ASAP, knowing that if the war continued for much
longer their empire would collapse.
And if the Americans hadn’t entered war at 1917 it might have
ended the same year with a German victory.
