Minor Prophets
1. Consider each verse a piece of a bigger
puzzle – maybe 1,000,000 pieces
- Only God knows exactly the final picture
2. Important details are “scattered in small
pieces” in all verses
- Each piece of the puzzle will fit perfectly
3. How to determine where the pieces fit?
- Look for how it applies to Israel

6. Studying the Minor Prophets
Zoom In and Out of Time
– Does it refer to current circumstances?
• Pre or post exile
– Does it refer to the near future?
• Coming of the Messiah (fulfilled by Jesus)
– Does it refer to end times?
• Tribulation or Millennial Reign or Eternity
• Multiple applications

17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the

until heaven and earth disappear, not the

(tittle), will by any means disappear from the
Law until everything is accomplished.

9. Zechariah: Prophet and Priest
• Zechariah means “the Lord remembers”
• Born in Babylon during the Exile
• Returned to Jerusalem with grandfather, Iddo,
and Zerubbabel with the first exiles 538 BC
– Father was Berechiah, who died at an early age
• Became a member of the Great Synagogue, a
council of 120 Temple leaders led by Ezra
– This group evolved into the ruling elders called the
Sanhedrin

35 And so upon you will come all the righteous
blood that has been shed on earth, from the
blood of righteous Abel to the blood of
Zechariah son of Berechiah, whom you
murdered between the temple and the altar.
• Considered the last martyr of the Old
Testament.

22. Zechariah 12: 1-9 Preview
• The Creator of the world is bringing history to an
end.
• Nations will attack Judah (Israel) and Jerusalem at
the end of the Tribulation in the Battle of
Armageddon.
• God will cause confusion among the attackers
and Israel will turn to God
• God destroys the attacking nations
• “In that day …” refers to this Tribulation time

1 The burden of the word of the Lord against
Israel. Thus says the Lord, who stretches out the
heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and
forms the spirit of man within him: 2 "Behold, I
will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all
the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege
against Judah and Jerusalem.

3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make
Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all
who would heave it away will surely be cut in
pieces, though all nations of the earth are
gathered against it. 4 “In that day," says the Lord,
"I will strike every horse with confusion, and its
rider with madness; I will open My eyes on the
house of Judah, and will strike every horse of
the peoples with blindness.

heart, 'The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my
strength in the Lord of hosts, their God. ' 6 In
that day I will make the governors of Judah like a
firepan in the woodpile, and like a fiery torch in

surrounding peoples on the right hand and on
the left, but Jerusalem shall be inhabited again
in her own place—Jerusalem.

7 "The Lord will save the tents of Judah first, so
that the glory of the house of David and the
glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not
become greater than that of Judah. 8 In that day
the Lord will defend the inhabitants of
Jerusalem; the one who is feeble among them in
that day shall be like David, and the house of
David shall be like God, like the Angel of the Lord
before them.

all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

• Israel’s repentance comes because they look
to Jesus, the One they rejected and crucified
• Israel mourns for their rejection of Jesus at His
1st coming

the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace
and supplication; then they will look on Me
whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him
as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for
Him as one grieves for a firstborn. 11 In that day
there shall be a great mourning in Jerusalem,
like the mourning at Hadad Rimmon in the plain
of Megiddo.

• Refers to individual faith in Christ, not
corporate salvation

earthquake seven thousand people were killed,
and the rest were afraid and gave glory to the

• A genuine experience of salvation of the Jews
coming to faith in Christ at end of the
Tribulation

• Only a portion of Israel will remain faithful to
Christ and be alive at the end for His 2nd
coming
– Live through the Tribulation
• The remnant (1/3) will survive the fiery
refinement to live in the Millennial Kingdom

"That two-thirds in it shall be cut off and
die,
But one-third shall be left in it:

9 I will bring the one-third through the fire,
Will refine them as silver is refined,

They will call on My name,
And I will answer them.
I will say, 'This is My people';
And each one will say, 'The Lord is my God.'"

the center of controversy?
• They are God’s chosen people, still.
• God has a special plan for Israel, and Satan
wants to defeat that plan.
• God made promises to Israel that He will fulfill
in His own time in history.

43. Is Salvation for Jews different from
Christians?
• Israel will repent of unbelief and embrace the
Messiah(Jesus).
• John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the
truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through Me."

own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to
Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And
so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
"The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
27 For this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins."

45. Who are the “all Israel” referred to in
Romans 11:26?
• Jews who have accepted Christ as Messiah
before Rapture will be taken up at Rapture
• All Jewish people who accept Christ after the
Rapture and are alive at the end of the
Tribulation.
– Large numbers of Jews will accept Christ during
the Tribulation, but many will be martyred
– Revelation 7:14 describes them wearing white
robes.

• We can trust the word of God – prophecy has
been and will continue to be fulfilled.
• God will fulfill His promises to Israel – His own
time, and His own way
• Live with a Christian World View of life and
current events
• Summary of Prophecy: Jesus Wins! Get Ready!
