- Lisa Dawidowicz Lisa Dawidowicz was born in the year 1925, in Ostrog Poland. Ostrog had a large Jewish population and was a major center for Jewish teachings. Her family was extremely religious. Lisa’s family turned half their house into a grocery store. She went to a Polish school and then a Soviet school after the Poland was taken over. Soon after the Germans took over, they made ghettos, where Lisa and her family lived for a short time. They also set up work groups, were Jewish people were made to wear the Star of David. Many people in the groups were killed are sent to concentration camps. Like many other families the Dawidowicz went into hiding. An old woman hid them in a potato cellar that was conveniently covered by pumpkins. They lay in the same place for sixteen months. Poland was liberated in 1944 by the Soviet army. Lisa lived in a displaced persons camp before immigrating to America.
