 India is currently importing 100 million tons
of crude oil.
 Foreign exchange outflow of Rs.1.5 trillion per
year (nearly $34 billion).
 At this rate, in 2030 the country may have to
import 300 million tons of crude oil.
 Renewable sources of energy are gaining
importance as traditional sources are depleting
fastly.
 Solar energy has the potential to meet a part of
energy requirement, because SOLAR radiation
is available throughout the year.
 For efficient energy requirement through solar,
we use Concentrating collector.
 Sunlight on the surface of earth is the radiation
received from sun.
 India has adequate sunshine available for most
parts of the year, including rural areas.
 The amount of solar energy impacting the
surface of earth is 1000 watts per square meter,
which is about 32.8 million MW every second
on the Indian land mass.
 Thermal Program:
◦ 600,000 solar cookers have been produced.
◦ 2000 concentrating dish cookers
◦ 12 community village cookers and 1.5 million sq m of collector area for water heating
systems have been achieved.
 Photovoltaic Program:
◦ 55000 street lighting systems
◦ 340,000 home lighting systems
◦ 1566 kW of power plants
◦ 540,000 solar lanterns have been produced
CONCENTRATING SOLAR POWER
A clean, large-scale solar thermal technology known as
concentrating solar power is used in special power
plants (Concentrating Solar Power or CSP plants) that
use different kinds of mirror configurations to convert
the sun's energy into high-temperature heat. The heat
energy is then used to generate electricity in a steam
generator.
 Parabolic trough system
 Parabolic dish
 Power tower
 Compound parabolic collector.
 Solar radiation are concentrated on tube with the help
of parabolic trough.
 Temperatures can be achieved nearly about 400°C
 In California, multi-megawatt electric energy are
generated.
 A heliostat are use for sun tracker.
 Solar radiation receviver are located on high
towar
 Temperatures can be reached near about
1000°C

 Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) is
a special type of solar collector fabricated in
the shape of two meeting parabolas.
 It belongs to the non-imaging family, but is
consider among the collector having the
highest possible concentrating ratio.
 Also because of its large aperture area, only
intermittent tracking is required.
 Aperture Area = W* L
 Absorber Area = b * L
 Concentration Ratio C = W* L / b * L
 Acceptance angle=angle between two extrem
rays
 India sanctioned the world's largest 750MW
solar power plant in Rewa district of Madhya
Pradesh, which will pip America's much-
vaunted 550-megawatt Desert Sunlight solar
project in California.
 AREVA has launched the construction of the
first of two 125MWe solar thermal power
plants in Dhursar ,Rajasthan. After
completion of project india will lead in Asia.
