Kei te pēhea koutou? Welcome to the nineteenth Settlement Support New
Zealand—Auckland City Newsletter.
The objective of this newsletter is to provide you with information about what
Settlement Support – Auckland City does, where you can find information
about employment, education, health services and many other aspects of
settling in New Zealand. This is also an opportunity to share with you the
services which are available around Auckland city.

Updates from Settlement Support New Zealand – Auckland City
Local Settlement Forum for Auckland City: Why Volunteer?
Volunteering is an important part of New Zealand society and culture. Why
should we volunteer? How is it helpful with gaining New Zealand work
experiences? What are the differences between volunteering in New Zealand
and overseas? What do you need to know about volunteering in New Zealand?
SSNZ Auckland City gives you an opportunity to find out more from other
organisations.
Date and time: 9.30am – 1.00pm, Saturday 12th June 2010.
Venue: Freemans Bay Community Hall, 52 Hepburn Street, Auckland City
Parking available on site, light refreshments available.
Settlement Enquiries for May 2010
SSNZ Auckland City has assisted more than 150 clients in May 2010. Majority of the clients contact SSNZ for
enquiries on finding employment (27%), followed by cultural/community (17%). There were more enquiries
related to housing – rental; temporary accommodation and employment – conditions and rights compared to the
same period last year.
Service providers have contact SSNZ Auckland City with enquiries related to immigration – family visiting,
cultural/community – support groups, learning English and mental health. Service providers were referred to more
than 13 other service providers who helped them with their enquiries.
Marae Visit
Visit to the Orakei Marae was held on 16th May in conjunction with Ngati Whatua o Orakei. More than 60 people
attended on the day, all received a powhiri and hongi from Danny and Dane Tumahai. The participants learnt about
the history, culture and tikanga of Ngati Whatua, the Haka (Ka Mate!) and flax weaving (raranga). You can see all

2. The Budget
The Budget was announced on 20th May 2010. The aim of the budget was to help families get ahead, to attract and
retain skilled people in New Zealand, encourage New Zealanders to save and invest, and to make the NZ tax
system fairer.
The key highlights as follows:
From 1st October 2010
 Personal Income Tax:
Income Current Rates New Rates
$0 – $14,000 12.5% 10.5%
$14,001 – $48,000 21.0% 17.5%
$48,001 – $70,000 33.0% 30.0%
Over $70,000 38.0% 33.0%
 GST increased from 12.5% to 15%.
 All Income support and other payments will increase by 2.02%. These include all main benefits, Student
Allowances, Supplementary benefits, NZ Superannuation, Veterans Pension, Working for Families (Family
Tax Credit and Minimum Family Tax Credit).
 Reduction in Companies tax from 30% to 28% from the 2011/12 income year.
 Top tax rate for most portfolio investment entities (PIEs) will fall from 30% to 28%, while other PIE rates
drop to align with the new personal tax rates.
 Tax rate for life insurance policy holders and widely-held savings like unit trusts and superannuation funds
will fall from 30% to 28% from the 2011/12 income year.
 No depreciation deductions for buildings with an estimated useful life of 50 years or more (such as rental
housing and office buildings).
 People will no longer be able to use investment losses, including from rental properties, to reduce their
income and become eligible for Working for Families, from 1 April 2011.
