2. This town has all of the needs, and wants of human life. Many of the components of this town such as the grocery store, convenience store, or fast food create an easy way for the citizens to access food and water. The many houses and apartment buildings create a place for the citizens to live. The dry cleaners make access to clean clothes much easier. The town also has a school which makes the town perfect for families. Citizens in the town can connect with one another at the park, movie theater …etc for entertainment. Necessities of life: food water clothing shelter Positives of the town.
3. One of our concerns is that… The paper factory releases pollutants such as carbon monoxide, chlorofluorocarbons, nitrogen oxide, and hydrocarbon gases (smog). Air pollution can cause heart disease, asthma, stroke, bronchitis …etc.
4. To help get rid of the pollutants in the air, we decided to put the factory next to a forest. Using the process of bioremediation, the trees will absorb the air from the factory, converting it to clean, breathable, oxygen. Also, the trees being contaminated could be cut down and used to make paper at the factory. For every tree cut down, a new one will be planted, creating a cycle.
5. Bioremediation… We decided to use the same process of bioremediation to help solve the problem of methane being released from the Dairy Farm as well. “In the U.S., cattle emit about 5.5 million metric tons of methane per year into the atmosphere, accounting for 20% of U.S. methane emissions.” -http://www.epa.gov/rlep/faq.html#3
6. Another problem we face… Is that the paper factory uses the river in the town to dump its waste such as phosphates, asbestos, mercury, nitrates, sulfuric acid, sulfur, oils and petrochemicals. To help get rid of the pollutants in the water, we decided to put a hydroelectric dam directly after the factory in the river. The dam will produce power for the town, and filter the polluted water to make a healthy, clean environment for animals and people to enjoy.
7. A problem we faced was that the fish in the river wouldn’t be able to avoid the polluted area from the factory, before it got filtered by the dam. To solve this problem we created a stream from before the factory, to after the dam. The fish would be forced into this stream by a diversion screen.
8. We found that… the chemicals used by dry cleaners are not environmentally safe. 4 out of 5 dry cleaners use a chemical called PERC, which can cause headaches, dizziness, cancer, and increases chances of miscarriages. To avoid these hazards, our dry cleaners will use CO2 instead of PERC, which is completely non toxic.
9. The car lot in our townwould allow car transportation to be convenient for the citizens of our town. Cars produce a lot of CO2 which is said to contribute to global warming. To reduce the amount of CO2 emitted, the car lot in our town will sell hybrid and electric cars instead of normal “gas guzzlers”.
10. The landscaping company in the town would increase the property, but also affect the growing patterns of the ground. Landscaping companies often use foreign or exotic plants for a beautiful image; but foreign plants often use more water than native plants. Therefore our landscaping company will only use plants that are native to our town to reduce water.
11. Solving the environmental problems the way we did, would not only be less harmful to the planet, but make life easier for the citizens of the town. Many jobs would be created for these changes, and the people of the town would be healthier, and happier.
