2. What is a record label?
A record label is a brand associated with the marketing of
music recording and music videos. A record company's
role is to;
• Co-ordinate the production, manufacturing and
distribution of music.
• Market and promote the artist/song.
• Enforce copyright protection of songs and music
videos.
• Conduct talent scouting and development of new
artists.
• To maintain contracts with recording artists and their
managers.
3. Major or independent?
Our artist would be signed to an independent
record label as their sound is very unique and
not very commercial.
4. Existing?
Our existing artist would be signed to a label
such as Domino Recording Company as they suit
the genre that they produce, alternative rock
and alternative pop.
5. History?
Founded in 1993, by Laurence Bell and
his partner Jacqui Rice. They are a UK
based record company, however many
of the early releases were by American
artists. Success was not immediate, as
labels such as Domino, who were
releasing more established American
rock and unusual British music, were
marginalised during the 'Britpop' era,
but a steady stream of new signings
gave the label increasing credibility.
Recent high profile releases. They are
one of the longest running
independent UK record label at this
time. They have signed other artists
such as Franz Ferdinand, The Kills and
Wild Beasts.
6. What is copyright?
Copyright is the exclusive legal right, given to an
originator or an assignee to print, publish,
perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or
musical material, and to authorize others to do
the same. Record labels are responsible for this
by protecting the songs and music videos of the
artists that they have signed.
7. What to consider?
When using copyrighted music, making sure you
have permission from the owner is crucial. We
are not allowed to present the music as our own
or present false permission. We are allowed to
use the music in the video with genuine
permission from the original source and also
acknowledge the permission given.
8. Use?
Knowing this information about record
companies, we can now apply them to our
production by seeking permission from the
original owners of the music and acknowledge
that the permission has been given, as well as
including protecting the ownership of of the
music in our own production by placing our
label on cover art, digipak and advert.
